  • We're so eggcited to share that our broody Australorp hen Starly has been sitting on eggs and they're starting to hatch!
Starly is a Black Australorp, and the breed tends to be broody. Broody means the hens tend to want to hatch eggs, so they'll sit on their eggs for weeks at a time to try and hatch them.
Unfortunately, we haven't had a rooster in the past, so Starly's efforts have all been for not...until now!
Our pullet Lulu turned out be a rooster, whom we now call Luí! And Luí has been working hard! lol! Starly and Luí became very fond of each other. And about 3-4 weeks ago, Starly started to sit on the eggs in the nesting box.
We had a few different eggs from our different hens in the nesting box: one from Starly our Australorp and two from our Blue Copper Marans Blue and Copper. So we kept the three eggs for Starly to sit on, and marked them with an X so we knew which we were going to try to hatch, and which we could remove in case another hen got into the nesting box and laid an egg. Which did happen.
Starly has been such a good egg sitter, and her efforts look like they are paying off!! Today we noticed a few cracks in Starly's egg, and when we held the egg we felt movement...and heard peeps!!!
We're so thrilled for Starly and can't wait to meet her new little one! Follow along as we share updates and hopefully some baby chicks!!!!
