It is easier for me to remember that imitate comes before copying by imagining something that I am bad at like painting. I could follow along with a Bob Ross tutorial (imitate) but if I was told to replicate the final product (copy) I would FAIL.

Typically, kids begin to color inside guidelines closer to age 4 since hand dominance is usually set by age 5 and grasp maturity starts around 3.5 years. It ranges depending on the child though. Some kids pick up coloring inside guidelines as early as 3 while others take a little longer so a general window is ages 3-5. Most of the children I've worked with start to grasp to concept around 3.5-4 years.
