As usual, a really useful video, thank you. I replaced the one on my A150 last year from the top by removing the inlet manifold and it was an unpleasant job, but certainly possible. Do you have any ideas how to make the starter last longer? It was clear mine had failed due to corrosion between the layers, as the earth connection has to pass through the body (3 pieces) and the scuttle drain is routed directly over that area. Last winter I found that the new starter was freezing overnight and freeing off with a loud pop sound in the mornings, so I would like to prevent that water from getting there. My idea so far would be to make a small funnel and hose that routes this water away, even possibly over the front or side of the gearbox. Also, I wonder if you have considered putting some waxoyl or similar around these faces of the starter to try to prevent water from getting between them?

Do you need to do anything special if you disconnect the battery on these ?

There is no "easy way" for this job. The flexible socket extension is definitely useful. I did one today same way but getting the + and - cables off is a nightmare, but there is just enough space from underneath to get those off.

There is no easy way for a mechanic, there is straightforward and non straightforward. Anyway, after removing this bolt you still need to lower the subframe with engine to access the starter and the other nuts and bolt, you will have enough room to work.

I managed to do it without lowering. I used a few 3/8 extensions and angled connectors. If you arms are this enough you can just get your hand in to guide the sockets.
I had to do it this way because here the cars get rusted below because of road salt in winter. The exhaust bolts completely seized. I saw another guy do it with a flexible 3/8 extension rod. But you know, next time I just say no. 😂

Hi, I see your video on A180 gearbox problem. Comments were turned off, I'm just wondering if you could tell me if it's possible to remove the auto gearbox without removing engine, subframe. I'm looking to rent a car lift for a couple days to change torque converter and while there I can check other bits.

Thanks for letting me know about the comments, I'll change that, then you can put the question there.

It is not impossible, I put it that way because it will be unnecessary struggle. you'll need to drop it anyway to undo the starter and other bolts. It might sound like a lot of work dropping the subframe with the engine and gearbox, but it's straightforward and quicker that not dropping it.
