    My goodness i remember catching spider around 5 to 7 in the evening and 5 to 7 in the morning then put in a box of matches. Then let fight in the morning. That's 90's kids thing lol cuz i grew up in 90's. i dunno what spider either to get we just exclude the house spider cuz they just run away. Usually we take those who build web in trees or in tall grasses cuz they're good in web and they are not venomous I guess? I've been bitten by it but I dunno still alive. Lol i miss my childhood.

    Soo this is from the philippines, to find this type of spiders they must go to a forest at night. Because at night the spiders go out and make a weeb its more easy to find. It usually sells about $0.10 in small towns but when they sell it in the city would cost around $1 to $2.
    All varieties of spider are allowed to fight as long as their in the same species.. House spider with the same varieties are not good at fighting like this so forest spider is the best to find

    I will not forget when I was in highschool 3 years ago spider-fighting got infamous in our school. It was not allowed. But our school principal one day jokingly announced to have a spider-fighting tournament in our campus. She said it to encourage the students to go to school (because absenteeism was worse at the time). Many students brought spiders in the very next day and were so f ecstatic when they challenged each other and proved themselves who have the best spider. The news grew quicker inside and outside the campus and we relayed the message. Others (especially the absentees) also can't believe quickly if it was really true. It was just so funny. But later days spiders got banned in our school. But still many other students continued making secret matches hahah.

    I remember this! Once when I was still at elementary and I was like 6 or 7 we use to catch spiders but we need a case for them to stay in and we sometimes we try to catch flies, we use walis to catch them and feed them to our spiders. Btw I was the only girl in our boy group. I was part of the group. Feeding the spiders are really not that hard. We just pick up a spider we randomly found and just let them fight not knowing their breeds or gender. We pay the winner atleast 20 pesos. But there's a catch, if one of our spiders dies, the other owner of that spider will need to pay us 30 pesos or give us one of their spider to replace the dead one. If this is different from other spider fighting here in the Philippines then okay... We have our own rules. We also trades spiders, if you wanna trade a spider but you don't have any to trade then you will need to give them 20 pesos. Para sa baon nila o I save nila sa kanilang garapon. Back when I was still in the group I earned 13,000 pesos o mas higit pa.

And when I get home, my mom would be waiting by the door with walis ting ting (broomstick) and I then get a good spanking for staying out late. But no regret coz at least I got a matchbox full of big spiders for the following days tournament. T'was wonderful back then.. 😄

    The spiders that they used aren't the kind of spiders you see lurking inside your house. House spiders doesnt fight and they just run away in battle.
    These are forest spiders. When I was young I hunt these spiders at night during summer in the forest with flashlights. You tend to do it at night since you can see them clearly in their spider web. These spiders are starved so that they will get aggressive in order for them to fight. When you just caught a spider the spider won't fight and just ran away trying to escape.

    Some thoughts.
    The spiders most commonly used in these fights are your typical house-dwelling or tree-dwelling orb weavers, which are not known to be venomous or otherwise dangerous -- unless you have an allergy or you get an insane amount dropping into your dinner plate and you still ate it.
    There is an existing trade in these animals, and people in the countryside go out at night into the fields and forests to hunt spiders for fighting or selling. Many are sold online.
    The matches we had in the 90s went on until a spider died. If it became clear that a spider lost and the other one started to net them, they were not rescued by the owner. Or if a spider kept running away from the match, we killed them ourselves. We didn't release them back into the wild because we didn't want to be out hunting and catching the same wimpy spider all over again.
    It's becoming more popular now for fights not to go on to the death, as you have seen in that video. Or if a spider refuses to fight or loses a leg in a match, they are considered to have lost, the fight is over and the spider is released back into the wild. If you're going to get into this hobby, this is the more humane thing to do. There are plenty of reasons why a spider might not be in the best shape to fight another one.
    By the way, spider hunts, trades, matches, and especially betting matches are ILLEGAL in the Philippines under at least one existing law: RA 9147, Conservation of Wildlife Resources and Habitats. For some reason the authorities look the other way, but spiders are still considered wildlife just like the rare bird or pangolin in the forest. Bug experts express concern that some species of spider are becoming vulnerable even before we can fully study their impact upon the ecosystem. Their call is for the trade to stop, or at the very least for fights not to go on to the death and for spiders to be released eventually after a certain number of fights.

    Note: These spiders (breed) are male and female and all territorial. They don't have to mate to lay eggs and become slings (baby spiders). Unlike tarantulas most of the species requires to mate.

  • @motortega5430

    We used to catch spiders when we were kids.. Spiders in the Philippines are not that venomous compared to others in foreign countries. They bite if you mishandled them or felt threatened. A trick in handling spiders is just blow on them and they would just stop and crouch. Spiders will fight each other if they meet in one another in the same string or path without any area to maneuver themselves. Spiders are being taken care of just like a prize fighter, giving them a good place to stay as well as food. The language is Visayan and yes, its in the Philippines.

  • @trolltrap
    @trolltrap 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Spiders are solitary and territorial. So, when two spiders cross paths they fight to the death or until one spider deliberately falls tethered to its silk or rappels to safety. There are species of spiders that show better skill and intensity in fighting compared to the regular house spiders, which are used as "sparring partners" or food.

  • @genesisqui6719
    @genesisqui6719 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    the type of spiders that are used for fighting are of 3 species and not all are qualified due to size, movement, length of legs and shape of abdomen. These 3 types are of the same sizes in legs, abdomen and movement, not all are qualified on the fight arena because their movement are not good and fast on the stick. Other types are good only on flat surfaces, some are slow moving and some with just a slight vibration the surface are afraid to fight.

    Hi, guys. When I was still before my teenage years I go out and collect spiders. I keep them on separate match boxes. The game is to the death when one spider wraps the opposing spider with his web. Traditionally, the fight ring would be a palm reed. Brought me back to childhood.
    cockfighting or "sa-bong" in tagalog is still popular here in the Philippines. We even have a TV channel for it. Fun fact. Texan cocks are prized birds for sa-bong-eh-ros. They are expensive breeds.

The spiders they use in the Spiders battle they get that every night where there are a lot of leaves and you really need to open your eye's so you can see a good and biger spider. But for the children, they just take it on their roof. The spider doesn't bite so it's safe, if you know how to hold. 🇵🇭

    Orb weaving spiders are used for spider fighting (around 2-3 cm. in size). If you handle one incorrectly while keeping it inside your fist, they could bite. Most of these spiders, including the small jumping spiders, are harmless, so you shouldn't freak out on them. Although some say the carpenter spiders are also harmless, they freak me out because they're large (10+ cm.) and they run fast.

    It will definitely bite if you don't hold'em properly, some of it are venomous & you can recognize by it's color, but it's not really fatal - some of it are painful & can cause swell.
    I remember back home, it's not only about fighting..The experience of hunting them & catching them are very fun & excited.
    The most effective time to catch spiders are during night time , maybe because they are active hunting food..so their webs reflect with the torch/flashlights:
    I found them mostly in trees like, mango, plum, also banana & corn leaves &, the most challenging is the spiders who lived in rocks (you might don't catch spiders but rather snakes lol).
    It's really fun, one of the best experience. I miss my old friend back home. We'll definitely so this soon when I come back. Thanks guys for this \m/

    Spiders in the Philippibes attack their own spicies for food, and they fight to the death in their natural habitat and they breed by hundreds, house or tree spiders have the same nature for survival and hunger for food (insects or any small critter will be a food for them. so of those spiders meet on the same branch or sticks they will definitly attack each other without second thought, they just fight as their instinct suggest and start to wrap their enemy with their web until the opponent is dead or will not able to escape.

    I didn't try Spider derby but I tried to catch some spiders for derby. Good derby spiders can be seen during fullmoon in the heart of forest zone. Spider derby is fun, however, there were some gimmick to make spiders go powerful. They make their spiders drink dextrose or coconut juice. Mainly those things are not illegal and derby spiders can bite you if you mishandled them.

    These are not the same spiders you find in your balconies. "Balcony spiders" are food. The "fighter spiders" are not all the same species. There are rare ones and can cost hundreds of dollars each.

    I had this when i was a kid. This was very popular during the 1990s when computers werent yet the thing. We considered these fighting spiders as our pet. We fed them with small insects. Not all spiders can be put into a fight. Like house spiders. They are not as aggresive as spiders from the trees. They easily lose fights

    In the Philippines, dog-fighting is already completely illegal; Cock-fighting is legal and regulated; Spider-fighting is just a hobby/past-time mostly for kids. It is the gambling/betting that makes it illegal.

It is Visayan or Cebuano spoken mosly in central and southern part of the philippines. It is now illegal to catch these spiders due to ecological issues and gambling also is illegal.

    Most of the time you'll see kids do this in summer between March to May ( no class). The serious one would search for their spiders by night and would make little cages (from matchsticks boxes). But rarely see this in the city. Probably in the provincial area (suburb). That's my childhood..😅

    they do keep those spiders and feed them with small insects, sometimes they put leaves on their small made-up cages so the spider thinks it's still leaving on a plant... those spiders are kept until they die on a fight or releases them if they can't fight anymore

  • @devstar3429
    @devstar3429 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    For your questions Sirs, Yes, it's a fight to death, but still depends, sometimes spider gives up (as shown in the vid). Inhumane? But they're not human!.. Seriously though they're frowned upon and even maybe illegal, especially catching and selling that many spiders (esp certain species that may be rare).. Now it's almost become a tradition, most Filipino boys (and girls) at one point participated in such 'sport'. Many children did and still do the spider fighting but just for the fun of it, and the adventure of finding spiders on the wild (as home spiders won't do). But it's normally done without the betting, just children having fun.. I'm even surprised to find out adults also do that, and what more, with money involved!..

    Ahhh this was the original gacha back in the days, when you thought the gagamba is a SSR type but you got a gagambang bahay which is the common rarity. And it's also one of the reason why i became an arachnophobic person, shits bitten me and made me feverish.
