Did you also listened to Mike Marshall and Chris Thile playing the Goldberg Variations?

Magnus, thanks for sharing that bit of Bach. Mandolin, nyckelharpa, and cello. JS Bach would have approved. It doesn't get any better than that. My hat's off to you gentlemen and thanks. Bob

Where can we see the Goldberg variations performance? Sounds awesome, chamber music played in a chamber :)

So, can learning backwards apply to any 16 bar tunes like fiddle tunes ?? I should think it certainly would. I should give it a try with a couple tunes (Irish reels, for example,), I have a bit of trouble with. Thanks for the valuable tip, my friend. Bob

Hey magnus thanks so much for this transcription. I'm struggling though with some of the fingerings, for example bar 8 and 9. Any tips?

Hm, I´m not sure what´s the struggle... I would need to see a video or so.

Magnus, are you supporting the neck of the mandolin with your left hand while playing? I play an F-style mandolin, and the neck is diving like crazy, but I'm trying to avoid holding it up with my left hand as it seems to restrict movement of the fingers. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks!

Hi Kasper! I use a shoulder strap to keep the mandolin in place. By doing that I can make my left hand more free, meaning I don´t have to hold it up. Do you use a shoulder strap?

    • @kaspersderlund5573
      @kaspersderlund5573 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Magnus Zetterlund Great, thank you. Yes, I use a strap and recently I also added a Tone-gard that adds friction to the back (and a little weight) to the mandolin, which seem to make it easier to prevent the neck from diving. I’m working on adjusting my left hand position to be more “violin-like” and less like what I’m used to on the guitar (my main instrument), which seems to offer better control on the mandolin. Again, thank you for taking the time to answer. Og god tur til Danmark, jeg har desværre ikke mulighed for at se din optræden denne gang, forhåbentlig næste gang!

Thanks man. I am a newcomer to the Bandolim (this is how we call it in Brasil) and your website and tips are fantastic.
A question, do you know our musical style named "Choro"? If not, I recommend, it is a great style.

Thank you Alexander! Glad you can get some help and inspiration from my material.
Yes, I love the Choro style. I wih I could play more songs even. Here´s a clip with me and my friend playing Receita de Samba. th-cam.com/video/9-WuPqRqPGs/w-d-xo.html

I've been practicing this for a while and one thing I noticed is that the section leading up to the first repeat sign seems different than what is played in from the cauldron. Is there a reason for this? This is the section: th-cam.com/video/8SpVxYz2nG0/w-d-xo.html

Yes, the Goldberg Variations is a piece for keyboard so you can make different interpretations of it. I basically play the right hand of the keyboard arrangement. I guess Chris and Mike has more of the harmonies crossing each other. Do that make sense to you? Try both! :-)

Magnus! Thanks so much for the inspiration! I buckled down and learned this tune based on your video and sheet music, and here's what I've come up with... th-cam.com/video/AR5ZxjaSC_I/w-d-xo.html
Thanks very much for all of your videos, I've learned a lot over the past few months and even ordered your Nordic Folk Tune book, which I highly recommend for all mandolin players.
P.S. I live in Maine, and have visited the shop where your mandolin was made. It's a small world!

Magnus, I wanted to say "thanks again" for posting the original video on Bach... it has really inspired me to dig deeper! I tried variation #2 even, th-cam.com/video/W0uRcH71Cuw/w-d-xo.html.
