    She's so precise with every note and her timing and control is true virtuoso level. Humbling

    I totally agree with others regarding the camera angle. It's so easy to get the fingering confused where the guitar or other instrument is shown face on. All instruction videos should use this method.

    Such an amazing mandolinist. It was a great view of both hands and her effortless playing. So well done. Bravo! I learn something every time I watch this.

    This is a superb performance and video. The notes I can get from just listening but the left hand fingering has really solved/improved a couple things with how I've been playing it. Also, just watching the right hand is amazing for someone coming from more folk/bluegrass. She lets these notes ring in their rightful place without sense of hurry.

    What I notice at once is that the little finger is not used at all, the position changes make its use unnecessary, or the changes are done to avoid its use. I do that frequently. The dreaded weak little finger!

    Really like the camera angle and love the playing, just beautiful and a very different tone than a carved arch top mando, very crisp and loud notes. Would really like to know more about the pick and I see that she uses a small piece of cloth on her lap for the mandolin to sit on...wonder why?

    • @philiprundall3432
      @philiprundall3432 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The pick is a Wolle classical mandolin pick. The cloth is the non slip type used in cupboards and other domestic situations and is ideal for holding an instrument in place. It works equally well with an A style mandolin, mandola, octave or mandocello.

      @@dufusbug That’s discouraging. Email me at jeffreyphillipsburns@gmail.com, and I’ll send you the pdf. (By the way, I think I found the problem with the link and fixed it. It has to do with equivocal spellings of my first name. it was spelled "Jeffry" on my birth certificate, but I didn't find that out until my thirties by which time I was committed in many ways to the more conventional spelling. On the internet I have different accounts, some with one spelling, some with the other, and sometimes I confuse them. Sorry.)

    Holy shit. Saving this one. Fantastic view of the fingering.
    As an aside, I notice she uses thick nylon picks. I don't care for them. I have purchased some Buffalo horn Roman picks. They sure make the strings bark. I wonder why she uses them. I also notice that she extends her index finger and thumb out away from her hand. I don't get that. Every Mando book I've ever owned shows the pick hold with fully cupped hand. It sure works for her though! Interesting.

    • @owen261
      @owen261 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Saint Steven most mandolinist use thick picks to capture that classic warm round tone a mandolin has to offer, if you use a thinner pic with the mandolin it starts to sound a little bit more plinky. However one is not better check out some of planxty's sounds, they get the best out of thin picks. Then check out chris Thiles interpretation on Bach he uses a very hard dance pick you can hear some of the changes compared to planxty.

      Umm I think that’s the musics tempo in of its self, I don’t think that this video was meant to be a tutorial but something one could reference, otherwise I’m sure it would have been a bit slower but this was a performance so I don’t know what your getting at

    Clean yes but inconsistent in the timing.

    • @evanstephen300

      Are you referring to the deliberate use of tempo rubato?

  • @lookingouthere
    @lookingouthere 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Why do people use so much rubato when playing Bach! It’s already perfect enough with a steady pulse and falls apart melodically and harmonically when rubato is not used organically. Other than that quite accomplishment.

    • @herbertwells8757
      @herbertwells8757 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don’t know what “organic rubato” means, but I agree that this performance sounds pretty mannered, and the last arpeggio is ridiculous. Starting and stopping on the chromatic build-up to the climactic chords at the end seems particularly perverse. It’s still a lot better than a couple of other monotonous performances of the piece on TH-cam, especially the one riddled with wrong notes (that I don’t think the performer even realizes are wrong).
