You're not alone in the thought but those of us familiar with dynamic bluegrass as well as understanding at least some of the history of the instrument really love it in different genres. Those who choose to not listen in anticipation of great music are "rank strangers to me."
No one in my school plays mandolin and there’s a concerto competition and I’m definitely entering the first movement with my mandolin. Everyone is always doing violin, piano, but NEVER a mandolin- love it
You know the instrument was born in Italy to perform folk music, then was used for classical and only much later it was adapted for American music, right?
@@nyko921 This is how you do it: The mandolin evolved in the 18th century in Italy and Germany from the 16th-century mandora. Interestly enough, The growing population of Prussia and the independent German states during the time outstripped the available land. Industrialization could not provide decent-paying jobs, and political rights were limited. Dissatisfied with the lack of land and opportunity, many Germans left and came to America. Settling in the "German triangle". A key area of settlement was Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.
I'm so happy that I found this on youtube. My grandfather used to play mandolin, both for his friends and later just for his pleasure. I used to stay around and just admire his skill, without saying a word. When he fell ill, it was one of the last little escapes he had, playing his old mandolin. He tried a few times to teach me, but I didn't feel like I had a chance. I was such a silly kid... I miss those days. Luckily, I still have the instrument, maybe one day I will find the right moment to take some classes.
Never before heard a mandolin sound this way. By default, it's to guitar what cembalo is to piano. How he creates the depth and color to a unique timbre and tone is miraculous. Simply magnificent and breathtaking.
I would say maybe mandolin is to guitar as violin is to cello, but that is definitely an imperfect comparison. Mandolin and guitar is a good combo though
@@argi0774 Well, regarding 'sustain/release' of instruments, I'd actually agree with @Ramy Frenkel here, and regarding the sound timbre of the instruments... I'd agree there as well...

I JUST GO crazy when I hear a mandolin I just love that instrument and also any mandolin music I absolutely adore Greek music specially with mandolin who else loves the Mandarin
The man is so nice, he at first sat at a different posture that wasn't suitable.. Then he changed it smilingly he didn't lose his smart attitude while they were laughing and performed so well!
Stunning execution and what I love about it is that is effortlessly virtuoustic without being gratuitously showy , which is what all great musicianship is about... orchestral perfection x

300 yrs. ago... No MIDI notation, no guitar Pro, no noteworthy composer, no Sibelius; shorter lifespans... Mandolin & Lute sure sounds like a harpsichord! Great work!
I have always loved the mandolin and this beautiful piece only serves to convince me how sad it is that we have lost the application of such a fine ancient instrument.
Peu de gens connaissent vraiment toutes les facettes de Vivaldi, si si !!! Écoutez sa plus belle partition dans son concerto pour mandolines, et ce n'est pas fini....son talent est illimité dans autres concertos non connus du grand public...
For the layman: the mandolin is tuned the same way as the violin; G D A E, it also has the same basic fingering as the violin(however the mandolin is fretted and the violin is not). The largest difference is that with a mandolin you use a plectrum while the violin is bowed. This largely changes how the instrument is played. However, as a whole the mandolin is basically the same as the violin on paper, and as such you can practically use the same music for the the two instruments.
Every time I listen to this wonderful performance, I enjoy it so much as the first time I did! Incredible, outstanding. demanding, encouraging! Thanks Ave Avital! I will never stop enjoying your wonderful talent!

I hope I'm not alone in thinking that the mandolin is a very underrated instrument.
I agree - but when it is played badly - gosh... worse than the violin.
maybe you are..as i have loved it dearly and played it classically a long time ago...its also great w folk song

Originally it's a concerto for mandolin. In Vivaldi music, you can easily switch the fiddle family for the mandolin family.
