The origin is that, in the first Digimon World, they needed enemy designs because all of the existing digimon were raisable and also important story NPC's and so you couldn't really have multiple versions of them running aroond. So instead they made generic enemy monsters by doing a bunch of palette swaps. There were a handful of original enemies created too, but Soulmon is unique in that it isn't a palette swap, but isn't really original either. For whatever reason, they decided that making Bakemon blue or whatever wasn't good enough, so they put a hat on them and called it a day instead. This is the only example of this in the entire game. Soulmon isn't the only "existing digimon but with a hat" digimon, though. They've done this with Agumon a couple of times, most notably the one with a graduation hat that's called "Professor Agumon."
@@princessmaly That's honestly fascinating! And now I have to think that Bakemon was somebody's favorite and they didn't want to see them distespected with a simple palette swap
@@princessmaly To be fair Professor Agumon is like a whole thing now with Fake Professor Agumon and Assistant Terriermon. Soulmon still just kind of... exists?
It feels like they hired a new guy to draw Digievolutions, told him that there's no rules, and just had to accept it when he showed up with Soulmon because they didn't say you weren't allowed to just put a hat on it.
I'm inclined to agree.....altho there is just so many with drawfee But ofc the fool one is the undisputed number 1. It was a scene crafted by the gods of fate
The combination of Julia vibrating with rage, the twitching eyebrow, and finally stomping down to Karina made me feel fear I thought I had therapied away, thank you for this
God, I love the reveal of Soulmon, not just because of the rage Julia feels, but because of how fucking right Nathan is with "The hat is rendered in a completely different art style". It just looks like it was copy+pastes there, and makes it look _even less real._
Or, alternatively, the get extremely small and simplistic. Whamon digivolving into Marineangemon is like a Whalord evolving into a Luvdisc, for all the Pokemon fans to have a frame of reference. Everyone's focused on Julia here but I love the moment where Nathan puts on the glasses and his face during "Awwww" goes from delight to disgust. Great detail.
One of those moments where you realize that doing what you're told is futile and you just gotta live your life free. Sail on Julia, never think about the Digimon rules again.
Things I loved about this : 1) the slow threatening walk over the auditorium seating that somehow transports Julia in front of Karina instantly, flexing Julia's "Ghost Powers (tm)"; 2) finding a way to animate an eye twitch on an obscured eye that's consistently been rendered with hatching, so you just find a way to make it work - beautiful!; C) the sketchbook renderings; £) the decision to add the cutout hat onto Bakemon instead of Soulmon even having its own page on the flipchart
That original episode is what set up the audience always reading into Karina's word choice. Because in the original audio, Julia says the rules, and you can hear Karina say 'unless' under her breath. it is PEAK trolling at the BEST possible outcome! This is the style of trolling people should learn and adapt from! SO GOOD!
Karina set up this entire episode with the intent to crush Julia's soul, laying the groundwork with Digimon for Jacob and Nathan that fit the rules, before giving Julia one of the dumbest digivolutions she could find. I am not sure if this was an expression of love or hate, but it's possible Karina perceives them as the same emotion. I greatly admire that energy, but I would never want it directed at me.
My favorite part of these animations is when someone is *this* close to losing it and you can SEE their head vibrating. You can see it PERFECTLY at 1:07-ish here but it's something I admire about all of your animations because it's such a small detail that HAS to be incredibly difficult to make because it's so subtle but you pull it off so well every time.
THE WAY SHE PUTS THE HAT ON HERSELF IS SO GOOD! Then Julia hugging the Soulmon at the end after stomping down the stairs menacingly because we all know shes not actually upset! You’re so creative with how you imagine these scenarios and capture the true emotions of the team in ways that cant be shown in their videos!
I don't know much about digimon, so I assumed these were exaggerated caricatures of them to make the bit funnier. But then I looked them up, and I was SHOCKED to find out that this is literally what they look like, even down to the comment about the hat being in a different artstyle. What the hell?
The little fakeout that Karina did where she was reaching to turn the page but then really just threw a little cardboard hat onto the picture and didn't actually turn the page. That's really good visual humor, you're really good at little stuff like that.
I never knew about or watched Drawfee until I started watching your animations. Now I'm up to date on their lore and funniest happenings, keep up the great work Deep
It's all fantastic, but do enjoy how Julia de-escalates and smiles when Karina hands her the Soulmon doll thing. Also Karina sweating when Julia says Don't draw what I'm about to see, since she knows exactly how Soulmon goes against the usual crazy ass Digivolving rules. Loved this as always!❤️ Cheers!!!
God the emotional build ups you do are always so magical! From the darkness closing in around Julia with the eyebrow twitch leading to her storming down to the stage I just love it!
