  • The 2017 Cadenza is more than a shot across the bow of the Lexus ES and Toyota Avalon. If shoppers are willing to give Kia a second look, the Cadenza is a direct torpedo hit to one of Lexus' most popular sedans.

    I have the 2015 kia cadenza and it is one of the best driving, best built, dependable cars I have ever driven. It's not a sports car but it rides as smooth as silk. It has all the tech and luxury features that you will need at a much better price than the competition. Test drive and you will love it. Also the new model puts icing on the cake with that heads up display. All I can say is WOW

    Oh my gosh, that's a beautiful side profile surfacing. The reflections on the new Kia/Hyundai are becoming my favorite design flow. Well done, Kia/Hyundai designers, well done.

    Kia's first generation Candenza was quite impressive. I mean it wasn't without its shortcomings but for Kia's first crack at this car segment it was undeniably undeniable, if I said that right lol. It left a great future impression all while expressing very little compromise. In fact the last generation Candenza was so good for Kia's first crack at this segment that it left an high anticipation for this generation Candenza and Kia did not disappoint. Hell of a job Kia kudos, well done!!

    My grandfather bought a 2018 Cadenza Limited last year. We compared it to Toyota Avalon, Lexus ES, and even the Chevy Impala. The Cadenza was by far the best out of all of them. One year later, he loves it. It has so much luxury and the nappa leather is wonderful. You cant understimate Kia nowadays thats for sure.

    At $47k, I would buy Genesis G80 over Kia Cadenza.
    But Cadenza starts at about $8000 lower than G80.
    $32k (starting price) is Camry V6 territory.
    At $32k (or lower with some rebates), it is very good bang for your buck.

    So I recently had a quandary ... deciding which car to buy. My final three were Audi A8, Genesis G90, and Kia K900. I don’t do payments. I’m a cash buyer being 64 years old. VALUE & COMFORT are driving forces for me. I eliminated the A8 because after comparing it to the Genesis G90, I didn’t want to waste the difference in cost. (That difference will be spent on 3 week holiday to Australia/New Zealand). Now it’s between G90 and K900. Something about the K900 just tugged at me and that’s what’s in my garage. I laugh at commenters that say luxury buyers won’t consider Genesis or Kia. Only label snobs or fools would throw money away ... or wannabe buyers. Great job Alex!

    On our third Optima now(2011 LX, 2012 EX Premium, and our latest buy and my favorite!! 2017 SXL) and love the attention to detail and comfort in each one! Lots of similarity in some components between the Optima and Cadenza inside and that Nappa leather is really luxurious...Turbo 2.0 moves out with real aggression! Wish we needed the slightly larger Cadenza as the new design looks great! Thanks for the review Alex.

    Man, I wish I had the money to sink into a new car right now - this Kia is exactly what I want. We as a family bought into the Kia brand in its early days as a means of simple, affordable and fairly reliable transportation, and as our tastes have matured and Kia/Hyundai has gone further and further upmarket, they have been excellent vehicles for us. Sure we've had our share of problems with the older vehicles, but never anything too serious, and as it is right now, I'd rather own a Kia/Hyundai/Genesis than a Toyota/Scion/Lexus, or really any of the Japanese and American competition.

      My 2010 Sonata has 106,000 miles with NO problems. My buddies Fords,Jeeps and BMW are in the shop all the time!

    • @DarrenPersad
      @DarrenPersad 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don, it sounds like your buddies aren't that well versed in cars then, because I daily an older A6 and run a Cooper S as a summer car - neither have seen the inside of a dealer's garage or anything (unless you count inspection). I do all the maintenance myself, and if it's something beyond my capabilities, both my father and grandfather have extensive knowledge of cars, so it's never a problem.
      Both the Audi and Mini have been reliable, and maintenance has been very straightforward.
      As for Jeeps, they can be very hit or miss, which is generally the case with any MOPAR vehicle. But as long as you religiously keep up to date on maintenance them, then there isn't much to worry about.
      Coming from a '93 M5, Bimmers have degraded in quality, just as Mercs have seriously gone downhill as well, but typically what I see in luxury brands is that the owners themselves haven't the slightest clue about car maintenance, which is why you see long lists of complaints and problems when owners neglect their vehicles.
      American vehicles aren't all that bad these days, but anything MOPAR is a bit on the questionable side, and that's only because of poor engineering and quality from the get-go.
      I'll say this, my parents actually bought into Kia/Hyundai early on for inexpensive commuter vehicles. The last Kia they owned was a 2005 Kia Sportage EX V6 with 4WD (not the later AWD). Exactly 10 years later in 2015 they traded it for a (then) new Honda HR-V. While the HR-V is a very mediocre vehicle, the Kia wasn't anything special either. They got rid of it just shy of 90,000 miles and it was just a sketchy vehicle from abysmal build quality, to questionable engineering and design decisions, to flaky electronics, and mediocre performance. But it was reliable.
      All brands have a good and bad side, there are some vehicles and brands that are known for less-than-ideal reliability, but any modern vehicle should make it 100,000 without a sweat.

    Great video Alex. Can't wait until you get to test it on your home turf. Kia has really come to the top of the automotive market in many areas. Their Japanese rivals, Toyota (Lexus), Honda (Acura) et al on the other hand seem to have stagnated or gone in reverse with time.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Cadenza is somewhere between the Hyundai Azera and the G80 in some ways. Although the Cadenza is mechanically related to the Azera, Kia positions it higher because they don't have a 1=1 competitor for the G80. The Kia K900 is probably the more rational G80 competitor although it is positioned between the G80 and G90 overall.

      Sunroof... theres a rattle coming from the rear subwoofer area near the sunshade... of course the dealership couldnt replicate the problem.. the faux wood under the radio rattles and squeaks when its cold.. its a beautiful car.. but it sould definitely use some refinement. What burned me with Kia is the service experience at the dealership... and since its the only one in a 25 mile radius, once i turn this lease in im turning my attention elsewhere.

    @Alex
    Very nice update over the 2016 model. It actually comes across more luxurious than the luxury-branded ES350, Lincoln MKZ, and especially the Acura TLX/RLX, particularly interior-wise on all 3. And it is definitely a much more premium ride than what the Nissan Maxima is trying to do, even that models Platinum trim. I did see the new Buick LaCrosse and it is a noteworthy competitor however.
    Just a few observations: Does the passenger seat have the same range of motion as the driver seat? Did Kia fix the awful steering that the last gen had? I saw that you mentioned the Chrysler 300 being slower. It is rated at 6.0-6.2secs from various journals and at 19/31, it is likely a wash in f/e. It also has available AWD and on the 300C Platinum trim, the interior has things like real-wood and leather wrapped dash, etc, for the same money. It just comes down to a matter of tastes and priorities.
    But yes, with a straight face, Kia can absolutely call this car 'near-lux'. If you hadn't said anything, I would've assumed the wood to be real ash, so kudos to Kia for getting right. And I saw that Kia revised the suspension with properly premium Michelin tires...awesome! They came to play...

    • @mattmolloy636
      @mattmolloy636 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This Cadenza isn't not more "luxurious" than the Lexus ES, especially when it comes to the interior. Check both of them out in person, it might change your mind.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +matt molloy I've been in both vehicles and the Kia is the better put together car and general materials quality is higher than the ES. The Cadenza's cabin is quieter, contains more premium materials, uses a higher grade of leather, more luxurious headliners, and offers a suite of gadgets not available in the ES like a heads up display, CarPlay integration, LED headlamps and a significantly better radar cruise control system.

    • @mattmolloy636
      @mattmolloy636 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Alex on Autos You're crazy if you think the Cadenza is better put together than the ES 350. This vehicle looks like a regular car masquerading as a luxury car for people that don't know any better. I'm really starting to question your taste in vehicles; I favor your videos for the accurate raw data, not the opinions that accompany them.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +matt molloy since the car has yet to be publicly sold I would point out that you have yet to sit in and experience the new car. As to the Lexus, as I've pointed out before, the Toyota Avalon arguably has a more premium feeling interior than the base ES, an opinion that I am not alone in among vehicle reviewers. I would suggest taking a good long look at an ES and this new 2017 mode side by side without prejudice as I just did. The result will be illuminating.

    • @mattmolloy636
      @mattmolloy636 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alex on Autos You know the old adage about assumptions, don't you? Perhaps you should have asked if I've experienced this car for myself, instead of baselessly speculating in a pompous manner that I have not. I am familiar with all of the cars you've mentioned first hand, and your opinions corresponding with other clueless reviewers means absolutely nothing to me. Let's cut the nonsense, this car is NOT as smooth of a drive as the ES. The styling of the interior in the Cadenza resembles that of a family sedan & not a luxury sedan, and the overall styling of the vehicle is uninspired. You have a severe misunderstanding of the luxury car market and its customers.

    @5:38 I've always wondered why full-size sedans don't typically have fold-down seats. I believe the Impala and the Azera have them, but I think that might be it [edit: looks like the LaCrosse and 300 have them, too]. Seems silly to me to be losing functionality when moving up - think of all the room you could have! It's hard to believe structural integrity or NVH would suffer much with modern designs. Maybe sound dampening is the issue...or, is there some other aspect of "security" for a near-luxury car at play here (e.g. "Don't want the valet stealing my golf clubs")?

      It's a full size sedan, teh Cadenza and Maxima compete with each other.

    @Alex: The new blind spot detection system "guides" you back to lane, I hear, by breaking the outboard wheels. Can you turn that off, or just ignore and change lanes anyway? Reason I ask is that I find the blind spot detection most useful in rush our city commute on multi-lane roads. And sometimes there simply isn't enough space and the blind spot will beep. Or when you are turning at an intersection where there are two or more lanes turning the same direction - will the blind spot system keep stearing you to a wrong lane, as it detects a car on a car on the inside lane?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can be turned off

    • @Viipottaja
      @Viipottaja 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Phew. :) I realize though I may not have been clear - can you turn of just the steering-assist off, but keep the blind spot detection otherwise on?

      Ok, thanks. Hopefully one can. Otherwise it would render the blind spot detection useless in many urban/city driving settings. :(

      My understanding is that the car won't be steering you to a wrong lane but to the one you are driving on to avoid collision.

    This car has a lot going for, that I have to say. However, the cheap center stack and the slightly underwhelming passenger dash is a let down to me (I'd welcome some sculpturing). Those two things need improvement and hopefully this car has - more or less - exclusive looking exterior coloring as well. But I understand KIA may want to keep this car well under 50k and perhaps even under 48k at all costs.

    I would love to see HMG give Kia a luxury off-shoot brand similar to Genesis, but with the cooler more futuristic styling Kia is known for. I know that would step on the toes of Genesis, but then why did they make the K900?

    • @OSTKCabal
      @OSTKCabal 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because the K900 was made well before the Genesis brand and was the sister vehicle of the original Hyundai Genesis. To be perfectly honest, the K900 isn't a great car. The Hyundai Genesis pulled it (being a mid-grade luxury vehicle) off better; the K900 should've been tuned more towards the sporty side in my honest opinion - but it wasn't.

    • @mozillagenesis

      matt molloy Lexus reliability - you mean like the RC-F with constant axle issues and noises that customers have been complaining about? The reliability thing is old hat. It's from the 90s. Lexus is no more reliable than many other brands nowadays. Remember, this isn't 1999. We aren't talking about a Kia Sephia.
