Over time, our home has been slowly transitioning over to healthy choices regarding food, household products and linens. Any simple changes one can make eventually become another layer added to a healthy home and way of living. It's easy for one to try to streamline everything at once and that is when it can be overwhelming, especially in the budget. Looking for sales and implementing those things as they come along is helpful. And as Lea suggested, first choosing the things that are most important to ones household and look for the deals and seasonal bargains as well! It's easy to want to jump in with both feet and go 'all in'. Take a slow pace and you will eventually transition your home. Each step toward a healthy home and lifestyle is a change for the better!
I stock our house with mainly ingredients. There’s pretty much nothing I can’t make in the kitchen. I don’t eat in restaurants because I never feel well after nor is the food very good! I just read “ultra processed people” fantastic read. The whole year to year changes of eat low fat/no fat/no carb etc is ridiculous. Because every year it changes and it usually comes with suggestions for ultra processed foods. People don’t realize you really can make start to finish, any ultra processed food you like with from scratch ingredients and it’s far healthier. ❤
First I would like to say that you are such a peaceful person. I am trying very hard to take it down a few notches in many areas of my life. Trauma makes us overreact, but I still believe I can achieve peace. I will just have to try a little harder. Secondly, you are so right about food waste. I hate to throw anything away. Trying to buy smaller portions, and use what we already have. ❤
I love your home decor, the organized 'clutter' that makes things cozy and near at hand ~ I'd never want to go anywhere if I lived there, so comforting!
My mom sadly raised me on a lot of those pre-packaged meals, but that is because for a few years we were receiving help from local pantries since my dad was spending all the money he made, was not good at having his own business, and just didn't think about how things cost. My mom only really cooked a couple things by hand. I started to learn how to cook at 14, and by then my mom was working full time. By the time I was 20 and married, I was slowly going from those pre-packaged meals to those homemade daily meals. However, having a family a five now, I spend 1k on food a month and all of them are whole foods. Before Covid, for a family of 4 (since my little one wasn't here yet), I was spending $75 a week on food. Things just really cost a lot more. I plan meals usually 4 days at a time, and then go shopping the day my pantry and fridge is empty. I have a very small home and little pantry storage, but yes, while it is great to have a prepared pantry, not all of us have that ability. I wish I did.
P.P.S. I am allergic to fruits and one of my sons is allergic to all nuts/peanuts. Soy bloats me. I have definitely learned how to try to make things stretch but it is hard to do with teenaged boys.
We are an ingredients household too. I garden and grow all my kitchen herbs and some veggies. I work from home and my teen is homeschooled. I cook from scratch daily and we love our leftovers. I have saved so much and have helped with inflammation in my body. I always get frustrated when people say eating healthy is more expensive. It just takes more time which I know not everyone has. I have chronic pain from a genetic condition so me eating well has become crucial to my health. Great video!
You are so pretty and so wise! Thank you Miss Lea for this video! I’ve been doing the bulk of the family grocery shopping/meal planning since my mom has been working, and I’m so excited to hear your advice because it’s way harder than I anticipated.
Leah, this is off topic, but I just read a book called The Well Watered Woman by Gretchen Staffles. You should look into it. Next I want to read her other book, Word Before World. I believe you would very much appreciate her!!! Also, I am very grateful for your channel. I’ve been watching you for the past probably two or more years.
I have read several of her books. I am reading Word Before World right now. It's so good to hear of others taking their walk with Christ serious. God bless.
Thank you for sharing these wise words. Maybe in the future, you could show some of the preserving and what you make with your seasonal food. I would like to improve in this area.
Buying bulk grains is definitely more cheaper in the long run. Not to mention when you soak them they doubble the amount. I also noticed people rather eat junk then cook. Everyone complaining how food is expensive but yet the restaurants are packed !!!
I really like how encouraging you are about making health and healthy eating a priority. I just wanted to warn you about using oxygen absorbers with dehydrated foods as they still contain moisture and botulism can grow in the anaerobic environment. Try using desiccant packets instead to control moisture.
I just started, well , will be starting to make my own bone broth and save stocks because it's been so good for me and helps my body especially having some in the morning, I've been freezing it and now thanks to to thanksgiving I can make a nice batch for the winter! I am definitely going to check out of thrift shops for some appliances!
I am so grateful for you, Lea! Your wisdom can be a God send for people of all ages. ❤ At my age, I'm still learning new and very important homemaking skills every day.
Oh my goodness...just found your channel and saw your dog! That looks exactly like my 14 year old sweet gal, Sugar. Do you happen to know the breed? Ours is a rescue and I've never seen another like her. I think I saw a curly tail, right?? Anyway, I'm sure you are busy, but if you happen to see this, I'd love to know. God bless you. So glad I found your channel.
I live in an apartment so we aren't allowed to have generators -- and it would be hard to power up the solar one since apartments are on different levels of concrete buildings with no direct sun overhead. I live in FL so am well versed in losing tons of food -- yes, it always seems to go out right after a huge shopping haul. God's way of letting us know to rely on Him and not sweat it.
