You are so right. The disease was devastating, a death sentence but, other than getting it through a blood transfusion, so easily avoided. Probably one of the easiest diseases to avoid that there's ever been.
I think a large part of the problem was that the most significant proportion of people (certainly in the western world) got it before anyone even knew that HIV existed. The very long incubation period caused a lot of problems because once symptoms showed, most people would have absolutely no memory of when or whom they contracted it from. It then took them a good few years to figure out what was causing it all. Easy to forget how relatively primitive medical research was then compared to now.
@@kimlarsosaying kissing transmits it is the kind of ridiculous idiocy that spread round in the 80s. There haven't been any recorded cases of anyone getting HIV from kissing. Oral sex can transmit the virus, but it's lower risk than penetrative sex.
11:05 “Pasteur the man who discovered Penicillin”. Shurley (!PE) some mistake? Why such a basic error in an otherwise illuminating documentary? Apologies if this concern has been raised in other comments; I’ve only read a few.
I don’t think people realized how narcissistic people are and were because mental health was not a big concern back then. Some people just won’t care enough about others to think about how their actions will affect them. If they needed money they would give blood regardless if they suspected they were putting the blood supply at risk. If they wanted to have risky sex and didn’t want to wear a condom then risky sex was going to win out over the health of their partner. If they wanted to cheat on their wife or gf unprotected then they were going to cheat unprotected. The sad thing is people are still like this, even more so, but the only difference now is because of the medications people don’t take this disease serious anymore so we can’t really even see the extent of how careless people are when it comes to others. If people died today like they died back then, there would probably hardly be anyone left. We haven’t even learned anything from this and that’s sad.

So many people commenting here want to bash Gallo so let them feel righteous about it. As a matter of fact, though, he is the one who pointed science onto the right course of inquiry. Who knows how much time and lives that saved.
joshron99 This assessment is incorrect. As a research scientist at UC Anschutz, I can tell you that competition is indeed important...however division among scientists slowed down the discovery of a blood borne pathogen as well as a blood test that would have at the least been able to identify contaminated blood samples and would have save thousands of lives by getting the information out a full year early.

@@p8entlyobvious383 (Formerly Jeremy Trajkoski -- aka, Dipschitt) --- Well, I seem to have missed something. Time to get get caught up. So children seeing two men in bed together would be "frightful"? Only if they were first mercilessly indoctrinated with homophobic philosophy--read, organized religion. If they are raised in a loving atmosphere and encouraged to develop their natural, open, inquiring minds, they would more than likely be curious to know more. Of course such exposure should have consideration for the ages of the children involved. But simply seeing two men being "in bed together" would, for children with nurtured natural curiosity, be no more remarkable than a man and woman in the same tableau. As for "religion that has ever stood the test of time," in case you haven't noticed, they all seem to be in the throes of a major day of reckoning. The Catholic Church especially seems to be hemorrhaging followers with all the child sex abuse scandals coming to light that has clearly been going on for generations. Check the situation in Ireland, which was devoutly religious for hundreds of years, both Catholic and Protestant. Gay liberation has risen almost in inverse proportion to the decline of the influence of the Church in that country and elsewhere. Even anal-retentive Islam is starting to feel the heat. Like the other religions, it will undoubtedly be dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st Century, or it will become an institutional fossil. I don't know where you live, but here in the USA, the word "muck" is a recognized, acceptable euphemism for "excrement" (I'll refrain from using the s-word). Returning to your notion of children finding two men in bed "frightful," I can't help but wonder if your use of that that word is another unconscious reference to your own insecurities: that you are really `frightened' by the possibility that you might really LIKE gay sex if you only had the right persuasion. It's been proven that many, but certainly not all, homophobic men at some level harbor some *desire* for mansex. And this was proven by a study which involved a representative sample of men who had their penises monitored for arousal when exposed to a series of images, including gay sex. I wonder how you would score on such a test. As for your comment about me "going to Hell," the way you haters crow about how all gay people are going there, it sounds more and more like my gay Heaven: all the gay people who have ever existed all in one place. Sounds like the setting for the mother of all parties to me! A few months ago, we observed the twentieth anniversary of the killing of Matt Shepard. I'm sure that someone of your caliber would say something like `Who gives a flying f---? It was only one person and it happened twenty years ago.' It still goes on today, Toodles. I myself knew someone who was killed in a gay bashing. Then there are the scores of gay young people who are driven to suicide. They're not hard to find. Memorials to them are all over TH-cam. Just do a search. These are the reasons we gays fight the likes of people like you. And I don't believe that any god would create people like us only to be predestined to any sort of eternal damnation. As for yourself, get over it. Just deal with it. Maybe go to a gay bar or a dating site and meet a male partner. We have all the same interests as "straights" so you should certainly be able to find a socially compatible guy. Maybe you need to meet someone who is a bit more on the aggressive side to help break down the wall of denial that you've been hiding behind all your life. Check out the S&M scene. Someone whose into it might be just what you need to find your god-given homosexual self. I think it could relieve a lot of tension in your mind.

They thought it was in the San Francisco hepatitis vaccine. But this was actually caused by one of the polio docs (Koprowski) using chimps (who had SIV) instead of monkeys. Then he vaccinated several villages in one area of Africa and it ended up being the epicenter.
But they're so many factors that led to the HIV epidemic in Africa, first, most of those village hospitals in Africa used a single needle on multiple people especially during vaccination, then there was a prevalence of other STDs that made HIV transmission easier, and even when the epidemic started, people didn't know how it spread
And Koprowski using chimps with SIV instead of monkeys for the polio vaccine. And they don’t refer to it as gay sex there. Men had sex with men but they weren’t considered gay. And women got it because if they participated in anal sex so that they didn’t get pregnant.

Wouldn't even speak about it in public till his friend Rock Hudson got it, and died in 1985. His neglect of the pandemic for five years caused millions of deaths worldwide. If there is any justice in the universe, Reagan is being spit-roasted in Hell.

It's come under some criticism because of the way it portrayed "patient zero". Scientists have found that because of the strain of the virus that he had, he didn't introduce it at all. He was around half way through the wave of infections that took hold (similar to the strain that was taken from New York to Georgia c.1979), and well behind the first known wave of infection that Robert Rayford had in St Louis in the 1960s, with that strain subsequently not taking hold.
At 45:20, I have so much sympathy for this family.
It's overwhelming. I'm a grown man and this family's story on the video makes me become tearful. That poor woman.
Are u familiar with the Gaëtan Dugas story? The man they blamed for being "Patient 0" for decades?
Prima donna!! Research is full of Bob Gallo types. The patient's well being comes after the EGO of Authors.
Good upload again! Thanks.
I don't know but if I learned having unprotected sex could make me die I would change my habits in a split second
You are so right. The disease was devastating, a death sentence but, other than getting it through a blood transfusion, so easily avoided. Probably one of the easiest diseases to avoid that there's ever been.
They didn’t come out with the details on transmission until 1988. After people, mostly gay men, had been dying for 10 years.
@@sigsin1yes, but still misguided people stating u can’t get it from kissing or a blow job but u can bc gums bleed
Someone would have to bleed into your mouth and you would need to have ulcers or cuts in your mouth. Saliva does not transmit the virus.
RIP Portia 😢
I wish our medical industry didn’t include incredibly important work being pissed away by childish bullshit and infighting. Rivalry can be great but this is too important!
Gallo lying about 50 isolates
Fascinating.
So many mistakes and denials along the way. And casualties by thousands, and later by hundred of thousands.Tragedy.
The opening to this show is kinda creepy.
Happy happy Friday to Quinn and pawrents!! ❤❤❤❤
It amazes me even after decades of knowing about this disease there is still ignorance and blatant hatred towards gay men.
And bisexuals men who get blamed for "giving" it to women
@@jmdenn3000 Typically those men are being dishonest and represent themselves as straight to the women. The dishonesty is the problem even though of course straights spread it too

I've been looking for the part 1 of this series. Does anyone know where I can find it please? 😢
I am sorry but I had to withdraw it as the sound was so bad.
@@jennybarraclough8112 Thanks a lot for replying! Is there any chance you could upload it again please? I remember I saw it once and it wasn't bad! That chapter is very interesting as it shows us how the desease spread it so fast and how the scientists work it hard to figure out how the virus work. I'll be extremely happy and grateful if you can do it please 😭
Hi Jenny Barraclough, Would you please reupload the Program 1 of this documentary? It got lost a few months ago
. No matter the quality of the previous sound.

Sir Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin.
@mike wright the frogs? You're not much of a dickhead are you?!
Gallo's voice keeps making me think I'm listening to a slightly less dulcet Carl Sagan.
they must make an HBO of the discovery of this desease
it's called "And the Band Played On"
Dr. Gallo is such a snake.
Wish I hadn't seen gallo in this - puts me off watching the rest because he was such a lying fraud!
You don't get a free hot dog for donating blood in the U.S. You get orange juice and a cookie! Everybody knows that.
Maybe now but back then it was indeed a hotdog plus you just saw it happen on film.
I would've preferred a cheeseburger!
I can't believe they would lie to us like that. It ain't right dammit and I won't stand for them suppressing the truth. You just wait till I'm done with them.
I gave blood in 1979 and we got orange juice and a cookie. It wasn’t the dark ages.
Just a few years before HAART

They were negligent
horrible, is donor blood generally safe /screened now , is this still happening?
It should NOT be happening now. Blood IS screened and is safe. So they (doctors) say. I would still be scared if I ever needed a blood transfusion though.
No all blood is screened now. But it took a lot of work for the hospitals to finally realize that people were becoming infected through transfusions.
@@suzanneforgione1018 Yes all blood is screened now.
@@ianbrooks4558 yes I think they started screening it in the mid to late 80s. Once they knew the virus was transmitted that way.
Is there any way to upload the rest of the series

Pasteur didn't discover penicillin, talk about a schoolboy error.
Was Alexander Fleming, not Pasteaur.
No. He discovered retroviruses years before. But the French were way ahead of him on this and since it was a retrovirus, he claimed it.

So lucky that I have medical care here, my problems are somewhat luxury problems compared to this, what I want to know is why AnthonynFaucci is still on the frontlines when he suppressed medical care during the Reagan admin he should try getting the virus and being without meds, I truly have no respect for him anymore.even if you are under a certain political administration you still have to have the courage to do what’s right for the people.
He's been a POS during his entire tenure in the medical profession. I'm convinced he knows more about the covid crisis they unleashed on us than he's admitting too.
He ordered hospitals to treat covid w Remdesivir a very toxic med & ventilator & is why so many died 👉sacrificed a few hundred thousand in the name of their new vaccines allegedly to save billions fn liars

Like always in every field of life, Americans must always behave like they were number one’s in everything, even if they need to cheat or present inconclusive and incorrect information.
I think it's totally disgusting that schools are now endorsing this muck as perfectly normal
+Jeremy Trajkoski - And what "muck" would that be???
+the iron way - His choice of the word, "muck" is interesting. Almost seems like an unconscious reference to a bad experience he had with a buttfuck. Maybe he didn't douche.
@@Inflecinfect , it means it is wrong .Especially for children to be exposed to the frightful scene of seeing two men in bed together .no religion that has ever stood the test of time condones this behaviour in its scriptures regardless of the muck that has transpired in bygone times especially in the Catholic Church .as for the 'unconcious reference 'you refered to I would never have thought about the word 'muck' that way .Maybe its concious in your life .Dont worry It doesnt mean your going to hell on that alone .

Agree
those Africans totally weren't having gay sex
But they're so many factors that led to the HIV epidemic in Africa, first, most of those village hospitals in Africa used a single needle on multiple people especially during vaccination, then there was a prevalence of other STDs that made HIV transmission easier, and even when the epidemic started, people didn't know how it spread
And Koprowski using chimps with SIV instead of monkeys for the polio vaccine.
And they don’t refer to it as gay sex there. Men had sex with men but they weren’t considered gay. And women got it because if they participated in anal sex so that they didn’t get pregnant.
