Great episode! Cool to hear the BBQ Comp reminiscing. We had some similar experiences about 10 years ahead of you guys, cutting our teeth at MIM/MBN events, long before KCBS came to north MS. Same approach to the contests, for all the effort and expense to get there, we were going to have fun, especially when we had Miller as beer a sponsor for a several years.
I think those mics that aren't Malcom's aren't pointed in the right direction. They look like condenser mics, and look like they should be not have the end pointed at the mouth, but the side. Looks like you're aiming at the desk or the ceiling, which is why they don't sound very good. Putting a rug in that room would help with the acoustics issues too. Sorry audio guy here. If you want some cheap broadcast style mics, like that SM7B, then try out the MXL BCD-1. It's not as nice as the Shure SM7B, but they cost around $160 a piece, and would help with the sound a lot, I think.
