Excellent video compilation of the Grumman Goose, went on a fishing trip out of Dillingham Alaska with my father about 10 years ago, and we took a Grumman Goose float plane to a river called the Nuyakuk river, and it was simply the most brilliant trip I ever took...thanks Dad!! Awesome memories!!
Still one of the prettiest flying boats ever built in my opinion. Looks beautiful from any angle, flies like a dream, and makes a great model aircraft too.....one of the FEW.

Thank you for this wonderfully classy video. The Grumman Goose has always been, to me, one of the most captivating aircraft ever built. I've flown Cessna and Piper aircraft. A friend told me that float planes require special maneuvering and that it took her some time to find a comfortable operating environment with them. folks Do not be concerned that the aircraft is being abused. It was specifically built to do what you see it doing. In US Fish and Wildlife Service this type of aircraft was used to deliver building materials to construct a cabin nearby, according to what I was told. The beach was used at that time. The worst thing that could happen is that the aircraft becomes stuck. We have what we call the "stuck kit" which includes a handy man jack, shovel, pieces of hard rubber, and a bow saw. This is used to jack up the stuck wheel and reinforce underneath. Sometimes we use obnoxious passengers for filler. We are thinking about using obnoxious commenters. I got to take the controls of this Goose once with Burke a few years ago. It is a powerful aircraft. It’s said to be better than the one in the Smithsonian.
I was fortunate to ride in a Goose flying to Catalina Island in Calif. about 1971. They had removed the co-pilot's controls to carry a passenger in the seat (me). Spectacular view and flight. I'll never get that chance again.
First time I've ever seen this plane or even heard of it but I gotta say, I think it's just about the coolest non-warbird prop plane I've ever seen! Great plane brother.
Nothing like that is attributed to the Goose. There is one reported Coast Guard accident of curiosity. As reported by others in the aircraft, someone exited the Goose in flight to work on the antenna. Body found in Pennsylvania.
OMG...this is by far the BEST ....recent video of the Goose. I love the naval paint job on it as well. What a beautiful way to go traveling whether you're in Alaska or Canadian bush country to the tropicals seas visiting lslands. This is definately my dream to do. Thank you so much for sharing.
I used to work for Catalina Airlines back in the 80's as a freight loader when I was a kid. The really cool pilots would let you take right seat and once they cleared Long Beach they would give you the controls. 180 to the island then they would take over to land. Such awesome memories! Thanks for the vid!

That was awesome to watch! The landings was were sooooooo smooth! Great stick! Makes me want that seaplane rating all the more! Those round engines sure hot start better than the one in my T210 :) The photography was great too. To be zoomed that much and still have such clear and steady video; well I assume that was no more an amateur at the camera than it was at the Goose. Thanks for a lovely 8 minutes!
50 years ago I flew all over S.E. Alaska in these planes with Alaska Coastal, even flew in one modified with turbine engines. The sound was deafening even with headphones on. That and the PBY were what they flew.
Justin DeGauthier, a pilot for, I think BC airlines, made a near fatal shortcut returning to Prince Rupert one day, he was heading through a narrow mountain pass and the the weather closed down on him, no room to turn, fatal to proceed he did the last desperate act of a desperate man, firewalled the throttles, pushed the nose down to get some speed then pulled it all into his lap and did a perfect inside loop, getting outta Dodge. Grumman said that it's the only time that a Goose looped, great plane great pilots.

You can check with European Seaplane Service. They have restored one Goose and have three that have been used for parts. I do not know what parts they still have left. Antilles seaplanes may have some parts as well. They have also bought licenses to build new Goose and the McKinnon Conversions. I wonder if they are allowed to make new spare parts.
Flew many times in Goose, in Alaska: Kodiak, Southeastern, Aleutians, Southwest, and even some interior lake and river landings. Never tired riding in the co-pilots seat. The Goose is on my top 5 all time favorite aircraft after 70 years of flying.
yes, no slope and silt cause problems. Burke is using the time-tested system of "cautious determination". On the goosehangar website there is a recent pix of the Goose clear out of the water, at Skilak lake. Large cobbles and a good slope make the difference. Comliments on the pun. Goosehangar.
Ive been in many a Goose, Single and double Otter as well as a Wigion and Bevers flying throughout Alaska and the Aleutian Chain. They are my favorite. Even had the opportunity to fly a Bever. Love all those old Work Horses!

Kman this footage is on the Kenai Peninsula not that far by air from Anchorage, I used to see it taking off from lake hood in Anchorage, which is by the way the largest seaplane base in the world. This is one of a few left flying, and so you know Alaska was the last place in the world that the Grumman goose flew commercial flights, that was out to the remote Alaskan Aleutian Islands by pen air, stopped unfortunately a few years ago. By the way their are also a few Grumman widgeons still flying in Alaska, one on the Kenai Peninsula and another one commercial out on Kodiak island, he flew guests out to a fishing lodge on Kodiak I used to work at, can’t remember his fan flying service name but he was an old timer, I think he still flies it on Kodiak, Google Kodiak Grumman widgeon. It’s beautiful, I remember it was yellow and blue.
This was awesome to see those sight, and hear those sounds and appreciate more what those men and women did in those years for our freedom. Please keep this plane going even if that is the only reason!

Cute plane. Interesting. Did not realize this was a procedure, just rolling up a shore. But just one rock or some mud could spoil it. Not even getting away any-more. Rather have a jetty of course.

I just flown in a similar plane only 2 weeks ago in Mallard Grumman with Pearl Aviation they have 3 planes that fly commercially in the top end of Australia but have been converted to turbo props such a beautiful plane to fly in
I also saw a Goose in Alaska that had turbo prop engine's instead of the original ones that was cool and a PBY landed on the naknek River while I was there another cool airplane those were the days.
I think that there are at least 2 in flying condition in Europe. One in Irland and one either in Croatia or Germany. Check European Coastal Airlines, but their Goose might be in storage for the moment. There are also a few in poor condition, one in storage in a museeum in Sweden and 3 used for parts in Germany.
Beautiful There is one sitting on an airfield 8 miles West of Cresent city Florida. The inside was converted to a custom bus living quarters. For the couple to fly to Alaska and camp out long term. Thanks for sharing this Video.

Where did this plane fly from I live in Alaska ? Reminds me of the Army Scout plane this man rebuilt and on his first trip thru Antigun Pass with tourist flew into the side of the mountain beside the road the young Canadian girl broke her leg and had teeth injury hitting the seat in front of her……but they lived and hauled the plane out days later.
It has got to be a double-your-fun kind of flight, when you get to fly/ surf in this manner. I've flown for many years, but have never had the pleasure, and the obvious thrill of doing it, like this! Some lucky, lucky folks, you are, says myself in a jealouse fit. Good stuff, keep it up, friends!

I don't know if Dean is still alive in Miami, but I used to build G21 upper and lower landing gear and tail wheel casters for him as well as a all other parts.....
The company I flew for had the STC for the retractable floats and we had them on both aircraft. We would fly from NEW to the mouth of the Mississippi River 5 to 6 days a week under part135 for a major oil company. This video brought back some good memories.
What a fantastic old bird. These and the Catalinas have to be my fave amphibians. Stunning scenery too but the Catalinas have it for the soundtrack. I guess pilot should have brought his waders though!
There was someone flying one of these (or something very similar) onto Longmere Lake a couple years ago, two-tone brown colors. I loved hearing the twin props!
The best time I ever had was flying in a Gosse out of Dutch Harbor in to Beaver inlet the work was pure hell but to Fly iin a Goose Made it way better thank you Tom for when I asked you to buzz the ship you buzzed it like a true dive bomber I can still remember the look on Tom Witsons face and my brother Ron we were comiing right down the front hatch of the ship they were welding 3 decks down and we got close when you pulled up I could touch the crows nest thankyou Tom were ever you are Brad

Jan. 27, 2019----Thanks for the video as this is the first time I've seen one of these being used. Not only that, it's in some kind of military paint scheme?! Oh yeah. Did 2 years at Elmendorf and was into photographing not only military aircraft stationed there or passing thru, but hitting the airport and surrounding area for ex-military aircraft.How about a purple T-6 with gold registration info painted on it? For those who don't know, instead of having a 2nd car/truck, they'd have a plane, some with floats on them all the time.

The new ones are all made to be as efficient as possible, that’s why they all look alike. Older planes had to rely on brute force engineering

By the way their are also a few Grumman widgeons still flying in Alaska, one on the Kenai Peninsula and another one commercial out on Kodiak island, he flew guests out to a fishing lodge on Kodiak I used to work at, can’t remember his fan flying service name but he was an old timer, I think he still flies it on Kodiak, Google Kodiak Grumman widgeon. It’s beautiful, I remember it was yellow and blue.
This was awesome to see those sight, and hear those sounds and appreciate more what those men and women did in those years for our freedom. Please keep this plane going even if that is the only reason!

The sound of the babbling brook and Pratt and Whitney R-985-14B engines is good. In a flash of the spectacular the owner is filming and his buddy is doing the flying.
Love the 985 Wasp! Awesome aircraft... I owned a 185 on 3430s for awhile.... 1944 was a great time. Thank you for sharing the bird and fantastic Goose.

It is the only one I know of with the lights. It is the most original Goose left that I know of.

Also, I wasn't aware that the Goose could carry two additional (drop?) fuel tanks right under the engines. Is that standard issue, or a subsequent retrofit?
@@fr-tigerfangs7039 the tanks are removable but not drop tanks.the Goose Hangar got a one time STC to install and operate them.60 ga each.

I just flown in a similar plane only 2 weeks ago in Mallard Grumman with Pearl Aviation they have 3 planes that fly commercially in the top end of Australia but have been converted to turbo props such a beautiful plane to fly in

I also saw a Goose in Alaska that had turbo prop engine's instead of the original ones that was cool and a PBY landed on the naknek River while I was there another cool airplane those were the days.
I think that there are at least 2 in flying condition in Europe. One in Irland and one either in Croatia or Germany. Check European Coastal Airlines, but their Goose might be in storage for the moment. There are also a few in poor condition, one in storage in a museeum in Sweden and 3 used for parts in Germany.

Where did this plane fly from I live in Alaska ? Reminds me of the Army Scout plane this man rebuilt and on his first trip thru Antigun Pass with tourist flew into the side of the mountain beside the road the young Canadian girl broke her leg and had teeth injury hitting the seat in front of her……but they lived and hauled the plane out days later.
It has got to be a double-your-fun kind of flight, when you get to fly/ surf in this manner. I've flown for many years, but have never had the pleasure, and the obvious thrill of doing it, like this! Some lucky, lucky folks, you are, says myself in a jealouse fit.

maybe use pneumatic inflation devices beneath the fuselage (or is it called a keel in this case?) to get it unstuck.
I don't know if Dean is still alive in Miami, but I used to build G21 upper and lower landing gear and tail wheel casters for him as well as a all other parts.....

The company I flew for had the STC for the retractable floats and we had them on both aircraft. We would fly from NEW to the mouth of the Mississippi River 5 to 6 days a week under part135 for a major oil company. This video brought back some good memories.
What a fantastic old bird. These and the Catalinas have to be my fave amphibians. Stunning scenery too but the Catalinas have it for the soundtrack. I guess pilot should have brought his waders though!

There was someone flying one of these (or something very similar) onto Longmere Lake a couple years ago, two-tone brown colors. I loved hearing the twin props!
The best time I ever had was flying in a Gosse out of Dutch Harbor in to Beaver inlet the work was pure hell but to Fly iin a Goose Made it way better thank you Tom for when I asked you to buzz the ship you buzzed it like a true dive bomber I can still remember the look on Tom Witsons face and my brother Ron we were comiing right down the front hatch of the ship they were welding 3 decks down and we got close when you pulled up I could touch the crows nest thankyou Tom were ever you are Brad

What a beautiful looking and sounding aircraft. I would imagine in place like Alaska, Canada, New Zealand, etc this type of aircraft would be the plane of choice.

Jan. 27, 2019----Thanks for the video as this is the first time I've seen one of these being used. Not only that, it's in some kind of military paint scheme?! Oh yeah. Did 2 years at Elmendorf and was into photographing not only military aircraft stationed there or passing thru, but hitting the airport and surrounding area for ex-military aircraft.How about a purple T-6 with gold registration info painted on it? For those who don't know, instead of having a 2nd car/truck, they'd have a plane, some with floats on them all the time.
Reminds me of Cutters Goose from Tales of the Gold Monkey which I loved as a kid.
