  • Joel Wanasek shows how automation adds dynamics, energy and punch to one of the key parts of every metal or metalcore mix: the breakdown!
He uses Cubase's volume and EQ automation features to make the first hit of each phrase within the breakdown hit a little harder, but the same idea will work in any DAW (just look up "automation" in the help files).
This will give your breakdowns in your metal or metalcore mix that extra dose of punch and movement that takes them from good to EFFING SWEET!

Great video again. The next one you guys should do is how to get brutal tones out of amp sims. And also how to eq them

Just detonate a nuclear weapon every time a breakdown plays

    Doubt it's just my hearing.
    Some interesting ear trickery
Almost a sub bass frequency fills the space after the first kick. Oddly, it's only noticeble in that first space.
Would you get similar results doing the reverse prior to the hit by just lowering or dulling the tones right before?

      You may be right.
I think the same track (section) was used later to demonstrate bass drops.
