    Wow. That's pretty much it. I've watched so many tutorials to get the strumming down, and none of those tutorials were accurate. Some didn't even come close. I think this is it. Good job dude! Me likes.

    I knew it was more complicated than many of the tutorials around were demonstrating. I get they are trying to be accessible, because this technique isn't immediately intuitive...but that "chunk" wasn't there and is really what gives the pattern that much needed percussion that palm muting just can't replicate. I'm going to need to practice this, but I can already see how damn fun it is once you get it, and can also be applied to other strumming patterns. Thanks so much for putting this out there!!

    Mahalo! I’ve viewed perhaps six videos on this previously. This one makes SENSE!
    As you know, there are a couple of ways of throwing in that Fadd9: lift the finger off the second fret of the G string or drop a ring finger on the third fret of the E string (saving the pinkie for the mute). I’m finding the one you use (third fret) makes the better, more whimsical sound.

    Out of all of the videos I have seen of people trying to reproduce IZ's strumming pattern of the song, your's is the ONLY one I have seen that throws in the staccato that I also believed IZ used. Nice job! I myself do a "decent" job with the song, but the staccato with the left hand has been a bit difficult to master. It causes me to revert back to just muting with the strumming hand.

In the video I could not hear the low g except on the bass. And also does it make a different if the mute is done with the right palm? Can you still get the same sound?

    Brah, I don't know how it's possible but I think you went and improved it. Listening to Braddah Iz's version and watching his old videos and he doesn't do the pinky mute just the right hand mute. The double mute you do gives it even more of that reggae vibe. Much mahalo on improving a classic. Didn't think it was possible.

  • @danno4631

    Mahalo for this lesson dude. Most tutorials I've seen on this recommend the island strum, but yours sounds more correct. I don't really understand the right (strumming) hand muting. Are you just muting at the same time as you do with the pinky of the chording hand? Or are you muting with the right hand after each strum? So much going on in this song. I've been playing it with going C then Cmaj7 first time thru on the first intro instead of C, G. Then going C, G, Am, Fadd9 the second time thru.

  • @freejohnuk

    Awesome! No one else covers this left hand muting! But I don't understand how the right hand is muting too - You say to mute with left hand, but you don't actually explain how or when.
    This what I got (t = thumb, m = pinky mute)
    t-DUmUDU
    When and how do you add in the left hand mute pleeeeeeease? Thank you :)

    • @HawaiiMusicSchool
      @HawaiiMusicSchool  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      John Jamieson Aloha John! At 2 :07 you can see how I use the Pinky finger of my fretting hand to mute the strings. It’s explained further at 3:34 or so as well. All you want to do is stop the strings from vibrating. Don’t need to press hard, a simple touch suffices. Hope that helps!

    • @freejohnuk
      @freejohnuk 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aloha @@HawaiiMusicSchool. Awesome you answered, thank you!
      Sorry I made a mistake when I said "You say to mute with left hand, but you don't actually explain... " - I meant "You say to mute with RIGHT hand..."!
      Because at 2:59 you say: "I'm muting it by putting my PALM across the strings." So it seems like you are muting with right palm as well as with left pinky (which I totally get!)
      ... you then go on to demo ALL strings muted with right hand and the ringing open strings ( 3:02 - 3:10 ) BEFORE saying add in the left pinky to mute
      If you ARE muting (all strings) with right palm, my question is still WHEN do you mute with right palm? It can't be same as when you mute with left pinky, otherwise there would be no point in the pinky mute!
      -- confused, but very grateful for your help, 'cos thanks to you I've finally nearly cracked it :)

    • @freejohnuk
      @freejohnuk 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aloha again@@HawaiiMusicSchool
      Ok, I think I get it now - the right palm was a red herring - that was just to demo muting - the ONLY muting is the pinky and that's across all four strings. (for some reason, I thought pinky was only being used to mute the low G!!)
      The the pinky mute only happens once per bar (on the stop, as you call it) - as per t-DUmUDU
      ... relieved now

    Aloha Aaron i have a question!
    I like the sound of the low g, its sounds warm and Hawaiian. However when i play with a low G it doesnt sound verry good.
    I like to play with lots of dynamics from soft to loud. But it sounds only good when i play soft, otherwhise it dominates the other strings. It sounds to boomy.
    I used the d'addario and the aquila low g strings (wound) on a koa tenor ukulele.
    Is there a way to fix this and make the low g more in balance with the rest of the strings even when you play really fast and hard ?
    Different low g strings ?
    Different ukulele made of spruce/maple with maybe a cutaway ?
    Putting a sock in the soundhole ?

    • @HawaiiMusicSchool
      @HawaiiMusicSchool  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Timo Teernstra Aloha Timo! I know how you feel. In fact, I felt the same way. For a long time I avoided Low G for just this reason. What I found is it depends on the strings. It varies instrument to instrument. It took me a year or 2 of searching, but I found a string combo that works for my uke... try mixing strings from different brands!

    • @timoteernstra3990

      And a super big thank you for making those video. Becouse of you i want to play with the low G, you make it sound so warm and good.
      And becouse of you i try to incorparate some licks, in the songs that i play to make them more unique and give them my own flavour.

      @Lupo4u2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      you can do either muting techniques, but for me the pinky version is much easier for an upstrum. I tried the palm muting (just search YT for it, there are plenty tutorials) after the upstrum but somehow i loose my smooth right mand motion and it sounds very bad.
      But for a downstrum i use the palm muting (chunk) instead usually
