What It's Like Trying to Contain Over 200K Acres of Wildfire

  • So far this year's wildfire season in California is on track to match last year's-- which was the worst on record. That's created a need for more manpower-- not just on the ground but in the skies above them. Vice New's Michael Anthony Adams embedded with Firewatch Cobra-a team of pilots, mechanics, and data specialists organized by the US Forest Service.
    Together, they man a Vietnam-era combat chopper retrofitted with hi-tech computers, cameras, and infrared sensors hovering thousands of feet above the flames. Acting as a communication relay station in the sky, the Firewatch team helps coordinate the more than 40 helicopters and other aircraft called in to help.

    " The main thing we do is aerial supervision. "
    Here in NC we are fortunate enough ( or were when I was employed) to have a small plane designated just for this job.
    Believe me, eyes in the sky save lives. Everyone with the NCFS talks of Calfire groups with respect. Some of our guys would go there after the NC fire season was over and help out.
    A great group of guys in any state.
    Thanks for your service and be safe.

      They would run planes over this fire a few times a day to check for heat signatures and hotspots, but many days the smoke was so bad they couldn't even allow a plane to go up in those conditions. This fire was a monster, but it is quickly becoming the new normal for California forests :(

      @@allenschermerhorn941 Sorry to hear that. Our terrain and fires are not the same as in Cal. North Carolina utilities bulldozers ( called tractors ) with specialized plows to cut a fireproof lane near the fire.
      The overhead plane ( pilot may be directing several fires if close enough) directs tractor operator and keeps them from being overwhelmed by approaching fire.

      @@deadtome44 You're actually not wrong. Wildfires used to serve the important purpose of "cleaning" the landscape. Because humans tried their darndest to stop fires, it lead to a mass amount of what is effectively fuel (organic matter) laying on the ground. What we're seeing now is all that accumulation finally setting off.

    • @eh3477
      @eh3477 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@lilbacon7777 Wildfires were more common in the past and supported a healthy ecological balane, but those fires were cooler and smaller according to historical data. Yes, humans have historically limited natural fire, leading to a backlog of fuel. There have also been about a hundred thousand homes pushed into these forests in the last 20 years, creating an added high fire risk. Add long-term drought, many diseased trees, hotter temps and more winds: there's a recipe for catastrophic fires.
      Note that western Canada has few limits on logging, less fuel accumulation, and still has mega-fires like much of the US west.

I have a lot of experience in my youth of clearing the brush around our cabin in the mountains and the forest rangers there in the San Bernardino Mountains were very very strict about that. Now I know that the Caldor Fire was in the Sierra and I just want to know if the Sierra get the services due to being in a national park rather than a state forest or something like that. What are the boundaries. I'm not for clearing out completely old growth forests however I am for saving Californians and even the Federal Government tax money. I like volunteers but I think we bet put more money back in the taxpayers pockets or money and goods are going to be more and more scarce.

    • @gmatwater
      @gmatwater 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The National Guard does come in to help with the logistics of wildfires and sometimes military helicopters come in to assist firefighters on the ground. But you have to remember, it takes highly trained, highly motivated people to actually go out there in the woods with the fires and do that job. You can't just take a bunch of guys who've been trained to mechanic on tanks or shoot a badguy at 600 yards and send them out to risk their lives in a wildfire. They would end up making mistakes to get themselves or someone else killed. There is a reason Wildland firefighters undergo such rigorous training and work hard in the offseason to stay fit and up to par.
      Now if they want to give forest service firefighters a budget like the military, I'd be all for that.

Also, these fires are so intense that they’re sending embers flying up to a mile away, and lighting the crowns of trees on fire like huge torches. Goats aren’t going to be taking down fully grown pine trees.

      Why? Because it puts them in a class above the usual thugs. And because it gets them the hell out of jail. Inmate firefighters only qualify if they meet certain criteria and if they meet the right physical standards. When they complete their training by Cal Fire, they get to go out and do honest work and be around mostly normal humans. And when they are finished with the program and they get out of jail, they can apply to go to work for Cal Fire which pays better than a lot of other jobs.

    • @gmatwater
      @gmatwater 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ababababaababbba not necessarily. As I've said, only certain people qualify. If a prisoner is an arsonist or a sexual offender or if they fail any number of other criteria, or if they don't meet the physical standard, they're not suitable.
