Olympus OM-D E-M1 v E-M1 mark ii. Is the original E-M1 still worth buying?

  • I compare two cameras from the same manufacturer, the original OM-D E-M1 (released in 2013) against the newer E-M1 mark 2 (released in 2016) Is there much difference between the two to justify the cost difference?
Samples from the E-M1 can be found here: www.flickr.com/photos/avpstud...

Another great feature of em1 is the weather-sealed body, which is very important especially for travel or wildlife photography.Last year, I photographed the desert landscape with my Canon 5ds, after the trip, the camera viewfinder was full of dust,I had to pay 600USD for cleaning and maintenance. With olympus omd, it is absolutely no problem in dusty or rainy environment.

The M1v1 had features that v2 didn't have, and vice versa. If you like night photography perhaps V1 is better. The v1 had a scene mode that they removed from later versions. In the scene mode you will find hand-held starlight mode. This takes several high ISO frames and stitches them together for a photo with less noise.

I'm starting to think an old EM1 is a no brainer right now.

Very comforting to see after I just bought a Mark I from MPB.
It will complement my Canon EOS 5D and my Nikon D700 😊. I never take videos, and just take photos for fun.

Having owned the original E-M1, check the back top dial as some did not work properly, mine was swiftly repaired in warranty, had no issues after that.
Just to warn prospective buyers to double check both dials front and back, if they are working properly.

Bought an EM1 recently. I’m no fan of Olympus’ menus but with 500 actuations & 1 10th of the price of a new mirrorless it just makes sense. The pancake lens makes it the ideal travel & street camera & the DSLR like grip is just the best for cameras around that size. At around 10fps it’s up there with Nikon’s D500. Who would want any more? To top it off it takes great images.

Regarding print size, I watched a video by Steve O' Nions where he uses a Olympus E-M5 and makes a print that is 36 inches in width. He says that it looks fantastic with little bit of noise creeping in at that scale. That's good news for me because I shoot with the original E-M5 and still love it. Thanks for a great video.

Thanks for the comparison. I still use the e-m1 with my old 11-22, 14-54 and 50-200 FT lenses with the mmf-3 adapter, and I’m pretty happy overall, even in low light. Would the e-m1 2 go as well with the old FT lenses?

Use the EM1, fantastic camera, no interest in video, do landscape & portrait,s. Coupled with the 45mm F1.8 len,s, great result,s. I find the basic 40 to 150mm zoom, great for landscape, ok, even with Ibis you need a tripod in low light, no big deal, some great lightweight carbon fibre jobbie,s out there,(if a tad expensive), with post, the diff between 16 and 20 mp is neglible, unless you pixel peep.

I use an a7iii. I went from Olympus e-m1 to the Sony. Frustrated with low light performance I sold everything. I think I miss my e-m1 and I’m looking for a reason to buy another. Think I may get both. I have figured out clients don’t really mind noise and ask me why do I look like a 4K television show. Guess we all long for the digital days. If I can get 6400 iso out of the m1 I’m golden

I guess the secret sauce of the M1 is the sensor...was desogned to emulate old cameras era!

My original EM1 last October would shut off if you bumped it slightly. I decided to get rid of it and get a G9. And then got a EM5 Mark3 last month. It was a good camera but the way you connected the flash they provided was horrible.

Do the Phase Detection works with M4/3 lenses too? O only with 4/3 lenses?

Em1 for sure don't hesitate! Weather sealed, 5 axis IS, no AA Filter, hybrid af. Only reason you'd want epl7 is if you want a pocketable camera
