Hope you all enjoyed the episode! Congratulations to Beard Gaming who was the winner of the competition! Check out my next video to see the results being drawn!
I actually really like Blade Strangers. It's what introduced me to the character and series. Kawase was my favorite character to play as, so I looked into her origins.
I can never decide if the enemies look cute or creepy with their human legs haha. Definitely worth playing the games though! They’re pretty cheap on steam! :D
@RetroBreak hi Buddy, last update ' been playing the DS version which just arrived.... Absolutely love the game, it's super chill, largely due to the music. I haven't found it frustrating (yet) which I thought I may. Using the ladders reminds me of og Donkey Kong. I think I'll get the 3DS game sometime and a Modded 3Ds. 😎
I've been a fan of these games since I saw Pete dorr talk about them in one of his older videos. Such a wonderful series, I makes me really happy. I haven't been as big a fan of the newer ones but the up to sayonara umihara kawase are some of my favourite games.
Your enthusiasm is contagious my friend. It always puts a smile on my face to see how excited you are about so many of these great games. Thanks again and I shared a link to your video to a few of my friends via email for ya! Edit: a I’ve ordered a copy of Bazooka and I’m going to hunt down a copy of the Vita game ASAP. I’ve always thought this game looked great and now that I know I can play the snes version on the Vita I’m thrilled. I’ll download the 3DS version as well as I don’t have a Japanese 3DS, although I’m thinking of getting one so maybe I’ll order a physical of that as well.
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed the video and even decided to get some of the games! :D Yeah definitely try and get the Vita game, it's great to be able to play the snes original on it too! :D Enjoy!
I only just found out about this series because they recently added the first game to Nintendo Switch Online. While I wouldn't exactly call myself a big fan just yet (I've only played a bit of the first game and Yumi's Odd Odyssey so far), I am really enjoying what I have experienced so far. It's also nice to see a comprehensive video on the series as a whole, wonderful work!
This just popped up on my feed. I really appreciate your enthusiasm and graciousness. Keep it up! I bought Umihara Kawase SFC around year 2000. I also picked up Syun or Syun Second Edition, I forget which. And a DVD of somebody doing a speed run. And a guide book! Deep in the bowels of my collection in storage.
Another great video dude! You've got me into to so many games in just the last few months I would've never known about otherwise. Keep up the good work! Oh, and I shared the video on my twitter! :D
That’s amazing! I’m so glad I can introduce people to new games :D thanks for sharing and good luck with the competition! I’ll announce the winner on the community tab and in next weeks video :)
I came to this Umihara Kawase video as a interested gamer and left this video a fan of Umihara Kawase. I love that Umihara Kawase wasn't left in the past and the creator was persistent in make these games with love. Cool video. ^_^
I found this video by seeing your announcement years ago in the Umihara Kawase. I only knew about the Super Famicom version, and I just found out about this whole series (in part thanks to RHDN). Adding the first three to my Steam wish list.
Really insightful look into a game series I've never experienced. Definitely going to invest in a couple of them, it looks really individual that's got to be a good thing
I knew about the original version of this game, but never had an incline to play it.... until now after watching this! Good stuff. If your history of Quintet video is as good and detailed as this one then we’re all in for a treat. Can’t wait!
I can guarantee that whenever the Quintet video happens that it will be way better and more detailed than this one! I've literally been writing the script for years!
Bought a 3DS a few months ago after giving mine away years ago. Just bought Yumi's Odd Oddysey on sale and oh man is it hard. Lovely to find this retrospective and it being a very thorough view on it. I'll definitely keep an eye out for the DS version!
The wait is finally over. You can see that you put a lot of hours into that vid Nick well-done mate. I still haven't picked up the DS version and I'm hoping that as a result of your vid here, that everyone won't be all over Buyee & Sendico trying to get it and end up pushing the price up even more.
Introduced to her through Blade Stranger's but got the first 3 and Fresh on sale on steam yesterday. Great fun, this along with Double Cross makes me love these grappler physics platformers
Learned about this game because I downloaded Super Famicom Online using a Nintendo of Japan account; thanks for the explanation! I REALLY had no idea what was going on, and I’m pretty knowledgeable about a lot of different Japanese tropes and whatnot.
Hi I’ve just come across your channel (while looking for DS videos) and have to say I’m really impressed! I’m a long-time collector of multiple systems from the UK (since 1996) and have been on the lookout for good non-US channels for a while. Just shared this with a group of European collectors I belong to on Facebook :) Now I need to add that DS title to my ‘most wanted’ list, it looks like a really interesting and unique series. Thanks for all the time and effort you obviously put into this.
Thats great! Glad you found my channel and thanks so much for sharing it too! I'm always amazed that new people are still finding me after doing this for almost 14 years now!
The first time I seen this series was actually during a TV special late at night. I was kinda hooked and it took years to find out the name. I believe my Uncle got a copy through um... means and I saw it in action for the first time like in mid or maybe even late 90's. What really kept the memory alive for me was the music. I found a midi version of the 1st stage music as a kid and that's how I found out the game's title. I didn't know about Boozoka and neither did I know about the download only. Thanks.
Last Sunday I started playing the 3DS entry, and I managed to beat all of the doors and backpacks in the time I had after job throughout the week. Now I'm currently going through Survival Mode and it's REALLY giving me the vibes of: "Everything you've played up until now has been training mode, NOW you get to play the game for real!" Which if true, it's a genius move, because survival mode would've been really disencouraging at the beginning, seeing how some individual stages took me over 100 tries. Now I can play entire routes that contain those stages with a set of 8 lives.
So I just beat all Survival mode routes, and I managed to beat the crab that took me 300 tries in a couple of goes. (Level 46) It turns out that you needed to use the mechanic in which you shoot the hook from the ground and then* jump to extend it further, rather than jumping and then shooting, which is what I was doing. Once I got that detail the boss basically became trivial. So what's the reward? A cropped low-res version of the box-art... That's anticlimactic.
Well sh-t, there's nothing else to do in the game, now what? Well, I might as well try the DS release they mentioned. First impressions: I'm feeling pretty nerfed, I guess that Sayonara features the strongest Umihara.
Hay there, just stumbled upon your gem of a channel through this gem of a game series. Just when I thought I could teach ya a thing or two about this franchise you would bring it up in the following scene and 1-up me with the trivia!! I particularly enjoyed learning about how that PS2 prototype game impacted the creators of ICO and Katamari Damashii, as well as the part about the artist selling books to fund his company. Seems like these guys were “indie” before it was cool. Or at least pioneering members of the classier, artsy side of the video game industry that seems to be fading away.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed learning more about the series! I really enjoyed putting this video together :) yeah it does feel like they were the original “indies”, certainly a very talented bunch of people who came together at a very exciting time in video games!
For Fresh. I am actually okay with the Metrovania approach when they did good enough to make the game feels and sound original. However there is one mechanic that I consider really bad and I hope it never existed at all: The hunger system. I know they were probably trying to transit the timer from old games into this but it just works badly when level in Fresh can be way longer while in the OG game it is almost impossible to die from time out. It just gets annoying when in longer missions we will have to pause the game like every 2 minutes just to make Kawase eat or she will be at risk of getting killed by small rocks which cause nothing more than a brief stun in previous games and also feeding her also getting rid of that beep noise when her health is low. Because of this mechanic unlike the older games where we can only focus on platforming and enemies, here in Fresh we have to split part of our concentration on tracking the bottom left corner for like every 40 seconds. Alternatively they could have made like ZL button as a one button eat feature so we could put an item in and make Kawase eat in emergent situations, but no being hungry when hanging on a ceiling when there are 7 frogs randomly jumping underneath you? There is no other choice than pushing the pause button and spam A to feed her 3 pizzas then carefully hold Y before exiting the pause menu. Like they just threw this poorly made designed into the game that doesn’t work well with the platforming at all and mixing them up. It makes sense when I hear you say Sakai isn’t the main producer of this game. This just doesn’t sound like the kind of mistake he would make at all.
0:49 I did wonder if Blade Strangers and Crystal Crisis would get mentioned, though I was sure you would make note of them, however briefly, then I recognised that bit of the intro from Blade. Haven't played Crystal, but Blade Strangers seems okay from what little I played of it (Kawase's primary super is a bit WTF, she goes knife psycho on her opponent). Really enjoyed the video and the history of the game series, haven't really looked much into Kawase to be honest, but this and your top ten DS games has piqued my interest. Looking to get hold of the DS game (and maybe the PS1 version, if only digitally). Got a slot reserved on my 3DS for the eShop version, shame the west didn't see a physical release (and that the 3DS is region locked).
oh yeah I forgot how brutal her special move is! Guess it makes sense as she's a sushi chef, but never expected her to be using those kinds of moves on people too haha! Glad you enjoyed the video! Hope you manage to get hold of some of the games soon :)
Very nice video! I have all the games (except DS), they are tons of fun, luckily got the SNES/PS1 versions years ago before they got quite pricey :) Subscribed!
Really love this game, after several years of me playing the games in Japanese and never looking into it until recently that Steam showed me the game on sale (Trilogy). Really unlocked a lot of old memories from this game, thank you so much for this video I enjoyed it :)
Great vid! As someone who knows nothing about the series, I think a bit more basic info up front would have been helpful before jumping into the history (just a simple graphic with all the games released in chronological order with platforms etc would have been helpful- there was so much info it started to blend together and a couple of times I got a bit lost!). But you’ve got me interested and I’ll def check this out on the SNES!
Thanks for the feedback! That’s a good point, I didn’t think of laying the series out before going into each one, I will bear that in mind for my next retrospective :)
Great video and lots of information! I only played the snes version a really long time ago. Its such a fun and addictive game. Loved the manga! I'm going now for the DS version. greetins from Argentina.
I added the DS game on my wishlist after you recommended it in a previous video : ) I've never played them before but seems right up my street. Would love to have the Switch game in my collection. I don't have any social media so have WhatsApp this video to my other gamer friends.
I played the original on the SNES back in the day, but never knew there was more games, it was probably because it never being released outside Japan. the other day was talking to a mate asking if he remembered the game "girl with fishing rod platform SNES game" as he didn't remember I thought id do a random internet search, and was surprised how quickly the answer showed, found this video and now I know there is more to this.
Hello! I was introduced to this beautiful little game via the PSP version and I am yet to play any other version. May I ask what makes the PSP version inferior to its PS1 and DS counterparts? Thanks!
Could you do a video flipping through the Umihara Kawase series artbooks you have? That would be awesome, I can hardly find anything online of the concept art let alone the official production art.
Great video! I got the Switch version (Fresh!) in Sept 2019, but haven't sunk much time into it. You mentioned you have a soft spot for single screen platformers, as do I, so I'm wondering what you think about Whip! Whip! It has single screen stages, not too dissimilar to Bubble Bubble, but also has a wacky grappling mechanic and a super cute art style to boot. Umihara Kawase, Cotton, and Whip! Whip! ...I don't know what it is, but these games and maybe a few others fall into a special category of games that are strangely warm and nostalgic, even without having experience or even knowledge of them before recent years. I guess it's just the fact that I sort of knew as a kid that games like those were out there, and I always wished I was a part of that world... late 80s, early 90s Japanese games. (I guess I did get to play a few, like a bowling alley in my town had 3 Wonders (Midnight Warriors, Chariot, Don't Pull). Amazing collection of games. Wish Capcom would rerelease it or I could somehow justify buying an original cabinet. Guess emulation is an option...) But anyway, might have to revisit some older games in the Umihara Kawase series... wish they'd all just come to Switch lol. Might also have to try that Bazooka game, forgot about that. Currently having a blast with Cotton Reboot though. Wow, when I'm at my iMac with a real keyboard I can really fire off some long pointless comments! 😛 Kind of embarrassing, but I'm gonna send it anyway!
Great video! Just in case you haven't seen this, there is actually a quite interesting story behind the first game. th-cam.com/video/YSbwJTHjwy0/w-d-xo.html Although this has never been officially included in the game, this story was from the original producer and it is a very popular urban myth in Japan. BTW, the literal meaning of the title is "you should eat the belly of a saltwater fish and the back of a freshwater fish"--Umi(sea)Hara(belly) Kawa(river)se(back) 😀
That little girl in the thumbnail has some serious adult features 😆. I always knew the existence of this series but never got around to try them out, it looks like something I could enjoy.
Two big reasons to play the games ;) haha! Apparently she is 20 in the later games and they decided to give her "adult features" to make her seem older.... It's a really great series, you should try playing some, especially the first 3 games! :)
@@RetroBreak yeah that kind of art is always kind of a bump to actually play these kind of games for me. But your video reeled me in to try and play this game probably on SNES, its definitely a game I could get hooked on!
i wanted to play this game ever since i saw the game-play years ago! it looks so Unique and fun! :D This was an Awesome!! video! i Love how in depth you went! i hope you do more Series Retrospectives in the future!! =P i shared the video on facebook and twitter! i REALLY!! HOPE!! i WIN THIS GIVEAWAY!! xP
@@RetroBreak Dang that sucks. I was hoping the ds version had an english release. Also I forgot to mention this in my original comment but I retweeted your tweet about the game and the giveaway.
Thanks I saw your retweet :) if you wanted to import the DS version I wouldn’t worry too much about it not being in English, the only bit of writing is in the menu, but unless you want to use the replay feature you don’t really need to navigate it :)
Watched this video, and the fun linked show, a few times over the last few years and had it in mind to play the DS game sometime. I just ordered a copy on ebay and look forward to giving the game a try, though it's not my usual. I like the back story and i do love a curio, like Cave Story etc, which this game seems to be. The Switch entries, graphically, look absolutely horrible!! Poor Umihara seems to have a more interesting background than turning her into a generic kiddie looking character. I really dislike how they've dumbed down Bombermans look and Character on Switch as well- it's horrible imo. Anyway thought you may enjoy knowing this video left an impression on me to try the game out. Happy gaming! 🐕
Looks like a great series thanks for showing it! Too bad Sayonara or the older ones aren’t on modern consoles. Fresh and Bazooka just don’t seem like the right way to get into the series.
Yeah I agree, I wish they’d put the first 3 on modern consoles! I feel like if people are introduced to the series through the last two games they might be put off trying the other better games...
I didn’t see anything mentioning worms though all of the research I did.. maybe it was the other way round? Don’t even know if the original worms was released in Japan tbh
@julianx2rl the physics are all messed up, it doesn’t feel right to play, collision detection is wonky too. It’s so frustrating to play. There’s many other issues too… the DS version on the other hand is amazing! So weird how they could mess up so bad…
If I had a nickel for every japanese platformer that looks like an acid trip and has a cute tomboy protagonist I´d have two nickles, which isn´t a lot, but its weird that happened twice. Right?
Hope you all enjoyed the episode! Congratulations to Beard Gaming who was the winner of the competition! Check out my next video to see the results being drawn!
Any way to email you if I have a question?
I actually really like Blade Strangers. It's what introduced me to the character and series. Kawase was my favorite character to play as, so I looked into her origins.
Just discovered her and now I'm hooked...no pun intended 😅
I've never played any of these games before, they look really cool so I'll have to give them a try. Some of the fish enemies look really cute!

Umihara Kawase has an adorable design. My favorite is her Blade Strangers design.

I've never played a Umehara game, would love to play it :)
25:47 play as dog! 😻😻😻 GAME OF THE YEAR!
Great episode!!
28:11 she is related scorpion...
Great video !
Any way to email you if I have a question? Great channel! Was wondering if the "Game Color" multicart can do save states.
9:03 - ok that's pretty clever
I've always been fascinated with this game series. But never seem to have had the time to sit down and play it properly.
Maybe you could play it on steam one day :)
19:03 You were... immediately hooked? :D
Damn, I missed my chance to fill this video with fishing puns! haha
I sad that the SNES isn't available on Switch to purchase. 😞
Great video! Just in case you haven't seen this, there is actually a quite interesting story behind the first game.
th-cam.com/video/YSbwJTHjwy0/w-d-xo.html
Although this has never been officially included in the game, this story was from the original producer and it is a very popular urban myth in Japan.
Never played any Umihara Kawase game. I do know about the one for Super Famicom however. Gotta try it one day.
Glad I could introduce you to the series then! Definitely worth playing :D Thanks for watching
@Falcom Scott Yea I should try the one on Switch actually. Do you have it?
Great video. Count me in for the prize draw. I've had this game on my Nintendo Switch want list for awhile now and would love to play it!
i wanted to play this game ever since i saw the game-play years ago! it looks so Unique and fun! :D
This was an Awesome!! video! i Love how in depth you went! i hope you do more Series Retrospectives in the future!! =P
i shared the video on facebook and twitter! i REALLY!! HOPE!! i WIN THIS GIVEAWAY!! xP
This series seems intriguing. Did they ever release any of the earlier games in English? Also great video I liked the way you covered the series.
They are in English on Steam, but there wasn’t any console released outside of japan for the older games sadly :(
@@RetroBreak Dang that sucks.
@@RetroBreak Ok sweet thank you.
Wow that's a nice game to start for 2021. Peter here from davao city.
Just got the gane on sale on the eshop on the 3ds. It might be the last time it will be on sale.
You know what I always say..
Think about Needs of Notice for Human Being
Words to live by.
Indeed, wise words! I need it as a motivational poster... or a tattoo! XD
@@RetroBreak That cancelled PS2 game looks like bioshock infinite! :)
🐕
Is the ps1 first edition still worth getting?
Yeah it’s still worth getting!
WORMS armageddon vibes😻😻😻😻
Kawase on mobile? That sounds painful...
Anyway, great video, really comprehensive for such a niche series
Glad you enjoyed it! And yeah it must have been so awkward to play on mobile!
Interesting looking games 🔥 very much interested in trying this one out!
Great video... just got it on 3ds...
The closest i'll ever come to playing a fishing game...or fishing in general :P
Honestly, same, unless you count Zelda fishing mini games 😂
@@RetroBreak oh damn yeah! And Yakuza aha
This is one game series I know nothing about til now ofc ;)
Looks like a great series thanks for showing it! Too bad Sayonara or the older ones aren’t on modern consoles. Fresh and Bazooka just don’t seem like the right way to get into the series.
Yeah I agree, I wish they’d put the first 3 on modern consoles! I feel like if people are introduced to the series through the last two games they might be put off trying the other better games...
Looks cool!
Is basically "Spider Loly". 😉
The game looks great, count me in!
Hey I love this puzzle game i emulated the snes version it's such a awesome game.
You should try the PS1 games too :) They are even better!
Best platform game - only on Nintendo :)
I was very naive to try and play the first one on a emulator in my phone.
Yikes! That would be impossible to play on a touch screen!
I thought they got the swinging idea from Worms, but worms was released after, so maybe worms devs played this :o
I didn’t see anything mentioning worms though all of the research I did.. maybe it was the other way round? Don’t even know if the original worms was released in Japan tbh
@@RetroBreak i mean that worms was inspired by this i think
That makes sense :)
shun is my fav
That manga looked a bit racy! Anyway I finished the video and you did a fantastic job.
The best in my opinion is Shun
Oh great, the psp version is the only one I got
Haha well at least if you enjoy that one, you’ll like the other even more!
omg Athelstan
Why is the PSP version garbage? And it’s also the rare instance where the DS version beats the PSP version, usually it’s the other way around.
I got the impression that it was because of performance issues.
@julianx2rl the physics are all messed up, it doesn’t feel right to play, collision detection is wonky too. It’s so frustrating to play. There’s many other issues too… the DS version on the other hand is amazing! So weird how they could mess up so bad…
Enjoy all the complains on this forum! 😅 kawasefan.net/forum/index.php?topic=97.0
@@RetroBreak All I wanted to know, thanks!
If I had a nickel for every japanese platformer that looks like an acid trip and has a cute tomboy protagonist I´d have two nickles, which isn´t a lot, but its weird that happened twice. Right?
What’s the other one?
@@RetroBreak Mischeif Makers
I had no idea that series protagonist was a girl
DOOD!
