Hehehe yeah. I thought Sega committed a continuity error in that but then I remembered that the plot of 06 ended with it basically retconning itself from ever happening. So yeah to Shadow this is just a threat to eliminate.
The funny thing is that the first time Shadow "forgot" about Mephiles back in 06, he didn't actually forget. Mephiles just met Shadow out of sequence. 😂
I love how Mephiles slowly realises that Shadow didn't just forget about him, but that he doesn't exist anymore. He's not fighting for revenge. He's not fighting to end the world. He's fighting so he can live and keep going.

This boss fight effectively confirmed that Mephiles IS "alive". He's simply stuck in the void, unable to leave and interact with the timeline; fully aware of his predicament. Which asks a VERY interesting question: If Robotnik(Classic) and Eggman(Modern) managed to find their way out of the void, what's stopping Mephiles? Or is he alredy out and we just don't know it yet?
I think it's because the Egg man's are still known in the timeline which means they will eventually be brought back in while Mephiles was completely erased from the timeline which stops him from getting back in.

I find it neat that Mephiles is BARELY hanging on to his existence. You can hear it in his voice, especially near the end, when he is full of desperation and fear. A broken shell from his heartless, manipulative, opportunistic former self.
Gotta love the fact that Mephiles has plenty of signs that he truly is forgotten by not just the characters, but by time itself - Not only is he aware of it by his dialogue, but his boss stage location is underground and out of sight from everything compared to Biolizard and Metal Overlord having their boss stages effectively be on top of the castles, high up where anyone could see them. Compared to those two, who are effectively still remembered and existing in the past, Mephiles is straight-up buried deeper in the White Void, doomed to remain there as a fragment of a forgotten time.
Honestly after rehearing that. I honestly think that might be one of the smartest bits of dialogue in the boss fights. Because Shadow forgot who Mephiles was before when the scepter of darkness broke. Then now with being erased but clearly holding the memories of what happened in 06.
i can understand why a lot of people wanted dan green back, and it’s completely fair to prefer the og, but i think robbie did a great job as mephiles. he never disappoints
Is not that he did a bad job, let's not deflect and lie to ourselves, is that he just simply doesn't fit Mephiles, I could see him as a Scourge tho but Mephiles? Nah, you're coping if you think he gives the same imposing presence as Dan Green did
I absolutely love that this fight single handedly confirmed how the places from 06 are able to exist despite what happened at the end of that game, the Time Eater managed to bring those places back because it took things from every time, everything that ever happened was affected by it, including the "defunct" timeline that got erased from existence because it still happened at some point in time at the end of the day, Mephiles here knows he doesn't exist anymore, and you can tell that by his dialogue "I will restore myself back into the timeline", beating Shadow would alter the events of history and may lead to him somehow returning, him getting defeated locks him into the fate he was given at the end of 06, and just by the desperation and in his voice you can tell how hard he genuinely wants to win, but in the end, once he's defeated and the Time Anomaly is solved, Mephiles ceases to exist once again alongside Crisis City and everything that relates to Solaris. Maybe this was all obvious but I remember there being a lot of confusion surrounding the presence of Crisis City in the original Generations causing some to question whether the Time Eater somehow recanonised the Events of 06 or how it was even able to bring them back at all when they were supposedly erased, and im glad Shadow Gens is clearing that up.
It doesn't seem like that. I mean, yes, 06 is canon but tails mentioned that there are infinite possibilities, so 06 can still exist in other timelines. but this specific mephiles seems to be from the main line that was deleted.
@@Eriorguez well, it wouldn't cease to exist, neither would Kingdom Valley (though it'd probably look different since Solaris never existed so it wouldn't be engrained literally everywhere) The version of those places from the 06 timeline wouldn't exist anymore, alongside everything that was tied to Solaris, not the actual locations themselves. That's what I meant when I said the places from 06 would cease to be.
@@thefollower2933 I understood 06's ending less as "Solaris never existed" and more "the Solaris project never was a thing". The flame went out before it could be experimented on.
@leohernandez8751 Also helps that, unlike with Sonic, Mephiles tried to perform his distract and then attack with those gremlins of his instead of a blinding light.
Everyone’s saying Black Doom caused this but remember, it was EGGMAN who fucked up timespace to begin with. That means eggman not only sped up the near return of the black arms but also damn near caused Mephiles to get set loose back into the timeline.
Black Doom was the main focus but I really wanted poor Mephiles to escape his non-existence and sneak back into the main timeline... somehow. Loved how they wrote him *knowing* he's been removed from time.
If you're going to have Shadow be playable in a game meant to honor the franchise's entire history, you need Black Doom. Shadow the Hedgehog was meant to be the start of a whole spin-off franchise, and Black Doom was created to be Shadow's Eggman.
I’d love it if Mephiles becomes a recurring villain where he is constantly trying to restore himself to the timeline but he just keeps getting his ass handed to him and thrown back into the void.
So something like Galacta Knight in the Kirby franchise (who was a near constantly recurring superboss that got erased from canon and reintroduced to it with every single appearance up until he bit the dust proper)

This bossfight absolutely floored me when I first played it. From the moment I saw Mephiles in the trailer, I was excited for his bossfight, and Sega did not disappoint. This fight does so much with so little. Mephiles isn't even the final boss, but he still has the presentation of much. His desperate pleas to exist are so powerful. It's so intriguing seeing a Mephiles that's a far cry from what he once was. He's no longer calculated. He's screaming and clawing and throwing everything possible at Shadow in a desperate attempt to get just one more shot at existence. It's amazing
Intresting how desperate Mephiles just want to exist in a timelines like his original goals doesn't matter anymore screw his other half he just want to exist
There’s something special about this fight compared to the other bosses in this game. They’re all great, but Mephiles once again steals the spotlight with what little time he has. Given the lore implications and the fact that we don’t fully deplete his health during the fight, it makes me hopeful that Memphis Tennessee will return one day soon
I mean, you can clearly see that here in the cutscene he tries to kill Shadow the same way he killed Sonic (minus the blinding part), but Shadow dodged it.
I don't think it's about daring, he just doesn't really seem to care about Sonic in the slightest. He never talked to Sonic or even said his name throughout the whole of 06.
It’s ironic really. In sonic 06 he was fighting to become Solaris: the sun God of time. Now he’s fighting for his life just to exist in anytime and he couldn’t accomplish that. What shadow said is true: he really doesn’t have a future. Ever.
If we ever have such a thing as a Silver Generations, Mephiles could be reintroduced again. This time expanding this idea that he is stuck in the void. It could somehow repair all the inconsistencies and flaws of '06. And, why not, connect it with Blaze from Sonic Rush.
I’m afraid a Silver Generations isn’t really possible because Silver doesn’t have a lot of past to re-explore because he hasn’t been used all that much. The only levels I could see them doing are maybe all the levels from 06, a level from Sonic Rivals, one from Colors (he was in the DS version, I’m pretty sure), that Jungle area from Forces where he fought Infinite, and maybe one of the Starfall Islands from Frontiers (because, hey, they did it for Shadow, I don’t see a problem with doing it for Silver). But yeah, it’s not really likely.
This fight reveals the fact that Mephiles is still alive and exists, but he was trapped in this timeline with no chance to escape, until the Time Eater destabilized time and space. In this fight, Shadow does not remember who Mephiles is, but he is aware that it is a completely dangerous creature and he must neutralize it as soon as possible to avoid future problems.
"There is No Future for you, EVER" Shadow upon sealing Mephiles AGAIN after this fight It appears Ian has kept toying with the "Does Shadow remember" question- and at the end of the fight, the answer is YES, based on Shadow's language here. Shadow knows now- it took an entire fight. But it was always a mystery- as he was Super Shadow when Sonic reset the timeline- so there was always a chance Shadow could remember it. Appears Ian took advantage of that, though Shadow did not remember at the start of the fight
I don't think he necessarily remembers Mephiles. It's either a subconscious thing or Shadow just recognized that he was too dangerous to be allowed to exist as he stated at the start.
I find it funny that most people assume that 06 was made non-canon because it sucked when someone says that those events didn't happen. But no, in the finale of 06, the timeline gets reseted to a world without Solaris. There are a surprising amount of people that actually think that sega made 06 non-canon
Mephiles is voiced by Robbie Daymond, the voice of Goro Akechi from Persona 5, Zhao from Like A Dragon, and Jugram from Bleach Thousand Year Blood War.
How shadow fought mephiles and mephiles using powers his powers once he defeat shadow would return shadow knew he would be a threat if he returns to their world
At this point he doesn’t even care about taking over the world. He just wants to live and not be erased from existence, he sees this as his chance It’s pretty much a fight between two individuals who want to live In a bloody cage match for survival, which is both sad and hard-core
That’s what they could’ve done with infinite since the last we saw of the phantom ruby was the classic timeline, and then black doom could’ve revived him unintentionally, but defeating him causes shadow’s memory of him being erased and infinite is put back into mania and the cycle repeats
"What is this? A seal of some sort?" My lizard brain immediately said "Wtf you've seen it before!" and only then I remembered that 06 retconned itself 😂
I hope Mephiles returns once again after X Shadow Generations. Something inside me tells me that Sega is preparing a future story about Mephiles returning and being the main villain of the story. And this Boss fight was an indirect warning about that. Sega never wanted to bring Mephiles back before because of the failure that 2006 was, but with X Shadow Generations being a success and everyone loving it,Mainly the participation of Mephiles, which was the biggest hype for the game, I no longer see any reason for Sega not to want to use the Mephiles character. Therefore, I think that now we really can See him again as the main villain just like he was in 2006
@@jacksoncaswell2.0no, if they know what’s good for them, I don’t think we’ll see him soon however, we will most likely see him in the future that’s inevitable
While it might not lead to anything, there's something that should be kept in mind... Shadow doesn't remember Mephiles, and when Mephiles was defeated he went back into the Sceptre of Darkness. But... This is Dusty Desert Mephiles at the earliest, and when Shadow tried to seal him away in the Sceptre again at that point, Mephiles told Shadow that sealing him in the Sceptre wouldn't work anymore. What if he went back in the Sceptre to get Shadow to let his guard down, so that he can make his escape?
Mephiles: I will get my revenge Shadow and return to existence ONCE AGAIN!!! Shadow: Who are you and how do you know I’m Shadow and what are you talking about? Mephiles: Let’s just say it’s a LONG story that NEVER happened. Let us celebrate the return of the one and the ONLY Mephiles HIMSELF!!!
Fans: Aww, I feel bad for Mephiles Me: HE LITTERALLY KILLED SONIC AND NEARLY DESTROYED THE FABRIC OF REALITY AND TIME ITSELF. NO "AWWS" FOR HIM So yeah, maybe it's best he stays sealed in a forgotten void. Because he would've been FAR worse of a problem to deal with than Black Doom had he fully returned to the main timeline. He's gone for good... unless fan outcry says otherwise.
I’m willing to argue about justifying Mephiles’ actions, but more so, Solaris’, while not justifying his murder of Sonic If we have to go back, remember, Solaris was previously a peaceful god, until the people of Soleanna had experimented on him, basically, turning him unstable Mephiles’ ultimate goal was to reunite with his other half, by any means And while yes, he killed Sonic, I can’t blame the crazed god for trying to unleash his blind wrath on everyone, not just people who hurt and exploited him Like, remember Chaos? Chaos was allowed to be pacified and laid to rest, but Solaris and Mephiles, by extension, are suddenly just evil and not a product of their hurt?
I think people need to remember that shadow has a choas emerald in this fight, whereas in Sonic 06 his fight with mephiles he had none whereas Mephiles had 2. If Mephiles where to EVER be back in the timeline, he would literally be the biggest threat in the room, especially if he has a emerald.
My exact thoughts, it's great that they moved the emphasis of this fight to one where Mephiles knows he's on the back foot and has to take Shadow seriously if he wants a chance to live again
I can kind of understand what people are saying about how Rob's performance is meant to symbolize his desperation on getting out of the erased Timeline, I just think he's a bit too high pitched cause Mephiles is still a dark character. I think it would've been a better choice if either Jessie James Grelle or J. Tatum were the recast, because they can still have that bit of darkness while still sound desperate.
I say the new voice put a new person active on him. I mean, don’t get me wrong. I love the old one, but the new one give you that desperation that cry for help that determination to come back from this endless abyss that he’s trapped himself in or found himself in, I don’t think the old voice would have give off that desperation that the new one is giving so yeah I will say that I love this new voice and props to the actor who played him
I was very happy when they brought back Mephiles. This boss battle was so much better than the original. I felt the original battle was too simple and easy, whereas this battle is faster, more complex, and more challenging.

Indeed! Plus, he also voiced Spider-Man/Peter Parker in the Marvel Animated Universe, as well as Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers, Marvel Future Avengers, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, LEGO Spider-Man: Vexed by Venom, and so on!
Mephiles' story is even more tragic now that he's reappeared-and you can see how desperate he is. His original goal wasn’t just to destroy everything; it was revenge against the humans who experimented on Solaris, who basically was him. But after everyone responsible for his suffering was gone, all that remained were the corrupted parts of Solaris that craved destruction with no real purpose. It’s heartbreaking to see how he’s trapped in this endless cycle, losing any sense of himself in the process. His return to the new game feels like a last-ditch effort to escape that cycle and reclaim some control over his fate. He started out wanting revenge, but now he's just trapped, desperate, and broken. Poor Solaris, endlessly suffering and seeking a way out.
I honestly love his new voice, you can hear how desperate he is to be real again, how angry he is that he’s not remembered. I actually ended up liking him more here than in 06 itself LOL.
This boss fight alone opens so many possibilities. Mainly the possibility of the return of Mephiles. This proves that while he no longer exists in the main timeline… he exists outside of it. Looking for a way to return. That is fucking terrifying! To think that even erasing him from the timeline is not enough to actually completely destroy him.
I always imagine that since he’s been erased/rejected from the mainline timeline, what if he tries to escape into an alternate timeline (like the movieverse) with all his malevolent memories still intact. 💀

Interesting. Although a part of me was expecting Mephiles to sound different (it has been like, what, two decades since he’s had an actual appearance, voiced and all?), I’m not sure *how* to feel about Mephiles’ new voice. Could they not get Dan Green back to voice him? Is it Dan Green or is it another voice actor? Did his old voice also get erased from existence and he had to get a new one in-universe? Well, either way, I guess even Mephiles is not safe from the whole “Sonic characters suddenly getting new voices in the English version of the series every decade or more” tradition. (Edit: After reading some of the comments here, I now understand why Mephiles sounds different. Apparently, Dan Green had retired from voice acting in 2011 after the passing of his wife. A very understandable reason and I am sorry for his loss. I hope he’s doing alright these days. Mephiles’ new voice actor here is Robbie Daymond). Voice aside, it’s good to see Mephiles again, even if there is no future for him. Ever. As a fan of him, I’ll still have to come to terms with accepting that fact considering just how dangerous he is as Solaris, his true self. Either way, Solaris means a lot to me considering how much the super-dimensional being that eats dimensions for lunch has been a great source of inspiration for me in terms of creativity, alongside some of the other godly beings in the Sonic series and I’m not ashamed nor embarrassed to express that just because Solaris originated from Sonic ‘06 of all games. Ever since I fell in love with Solaris, god characters in general have been a great source of inspiration for me and tend to be my favorite characters in media and my favorite kind of entity in general. Solaris had also made me become real familiar with all the space-time and multiversal elements used in media. (Now that I think about it, what would happen if someone were to absorb Solaris in his original tiny flame form and assimilate him into their being instead of just blowing him out of existence? Would they gain all of Solaris’ traits and abilities? Become a new form of the entity? It’s something that I tend to imagine when I think about him now. I just want to absorb him and assimilate him into my being. Pardon, ignore my weird personal ramblings here.)

I hope we don't get a Silver Gens but rather his own game
I’m afraid a Silver Generations isn’t really possible because Silver doesn’t have a lot of past to re-explore because he hasn’t been used all that much. The only levels I could see them doing are maybe all the levels from 06, a level from Sonic Rivals, one from Colors (he was in the DS version, I’m pretty sure), that Jungle area from Forces where he fought Infinite, and maybe one of the Starfall Islands from Frontiers (because, hey, they did it for Shadow, I don’t see a problem with doing it for Silver). But yeah, it’s not really likely.

It appears Ian has kept toying with the "Does Shadow remember" question- and at the end of the fight, the answer is YES, based on Shadow's language here.
I never thought I would hear my recently favorite Spider-Man voice perform as Mephiles. But, I admit it. He gave a great impression.

@@SherlockSMasters I know. It's just a meme. :p
@@HDPlayer_909 ok :3
I love that he resorts to taking on the incomplete form of Solaris near the end. It just shows how much was at stake in this fight alone.
Trying to return to existence is a really hypocritical motivation for a guy who wanted to erase all existence.
I think he was just trying to reset everything and rebuild it to his liking.
"I owe much to you Shadow The Hedgehog" my what a reference..
"LONG story that NEVER happened."
That line is actually legit...
Fans: Aww, I feel bad for Mephiles
Me: HE LITTERALLY KILLED SONIC AND NEARLY DESTROYED THE FABRIC OF REALITY AND TIME ITSELF. NO "AWWS" FOR HIM
So yeah, maybe it's best he stays sealed in a forgotten void. Because he would've been FAR worse of a problem to deal with than Black Doom had he fully returned to the main timeline. He's gone for good... unless fan outcry says otherwise.
Fan outcry finna say otherwise lmao
I’m willing to argue about justifying Mephiles’ actions, but more so, Solaris’, while not justifying his murder of Sonic
If we have to go back, remember, Solaris was previously a peaceful god, until the people of Soleanna had experimented on him, basically, turning him unstable
Mephiles’ ultimate goal was to reunite with his other half, by any means
And while yes, he killed Sonic, I can’t blame the crazed god for trying to unleash his blind wrath on everyone, not just people who hurt and exploited him
Like, remember Chaos?
Tbf they could’ve gave him a filter, but the voice acting is good just, plus the game he’s from is pretty much 20 years old so I excuse it
The best part? Shadow finishes off Mephiles with the same trick he pulled on Silver back then. “Chaos Control!” Whack!
I say the new voice put a new person active on him. I mean, don’t get me wrong. I love the old one, but the new one give you that desperation that cry for help that determination to come back from this endless abyss that he’s trapped himself in or found himself in, I don’t think the old voice would have give off that desperation that the new one is giving so yeah I will say that I love this new voice and props to the actor who played him
Did you mean "perspective" ?
Also yeah, I agree
I loved this nod to him while also acknowledging that he doesn't exist in the real/main timeline anymore, it's such good writing
I was very happy when they brought back Mephiles. This boss battle was so much better than the original. I felt the original battle was too simple and easy, whereas this battle is faster, more complex, and more challenging.
4:10 The I of now absorbed your power through your shadow in the past. What may have worked 10 years ago, no longer does!
This fight is full of 06 references no way they forgot this.
They didn't, he got him weak so he could be sealed, that's how they trapped him at first, he was weak and formless
@@etherealhatred He was also weak and tired after Shadow defeated him a second time in 06 as well yet he can't be sealed. Mephiles was weak at first 10 years ago due to the fact he was being separated.
@@etherealhatredYeah, as what the comment above me said, Mephiles was weak the first time because he had just been separated from Solaris
Mephiles: You took...*EVERYTHING* from me
Shadow: I dont even know who you are
fun fact: mephiles' voice actor, Robbie Daymond also voices a couple of anime characters like Chrollo from Hunter x Hunter, Fushiguro from JJK, and Kozuki Oden!
A fitting treatment for an evil god no?
@@Dustfired he wasnt evil at first. The Solaris Project coruppted Solaris and made it evil.
@@Dustfired It does.
For a guy who wanted to erase multiple timelines, he ended up getting himself erased from them.
“You took everything from me”
“I don’t even know who you are”
“You will”
I honestly love his new voice, you can hear how desperate he is to be real again, how angry he is that he’s not remembered. I actually ended up liking him more here than in 06 itself LOL.
3:02 ok i dont see enough people talking about how the transformation kind of looks like iblis
“No! I want…to exist!!”
“Exist in Unbirth, Satan.”
@@Termina2018
With movie confirm of a surprise cameo in credit, and possibly being Sliver
Would love to see Game Mephiles once again ruined another Sliver world, and made his appearance to movieverse
It may not be Dan Green, but I still love the VA's performance.
I also love the concept of his laser actually being a lance that comes out of his hand.
I’d heard he had a new voice in the form of the Justice Arcana
The VA is great but doesn't suit Mephiles at all and whoever says otherwise is lying to himself and coping hard
@@etherealhatred Uh, you *low key* know you’re talking about Goro Akechi, right?
@@RedJLP yeah, Goro's voice does not fit Mephilies lol, it's too high pitched. Robbie Daymond is Awesome but he's not a Mephilies
