Jaco was a wild man! A mad musical scientist! A wizard! A rock star who knew jazz! Very misunderstood and very appreciated! Bach II! Gone too soon! Embrace him, for you will never see another of his kind and influence in your lifetime!

...i saw Jaco playing with Weather Report many times when they visited the UK -what an amazing musician, but I also saw him after he left the band trying to talk his way into a gig, a situation that could have turned ugly when he realised he wasn't getting anywhere, luckily on that occasion someone behind the security line recognised him and they let him in...a few years later I was in an internet chat room with people discussing the whole 'jazz-fusion' era when the conversation turned to Jaco, many 'disappointing' views were expressed -he certainly was a controversial figure, usual, things you hear 'he was a junky' - 'his ego was over the top' etc but in that chat room one of his daughters spoke about him, with the sadness you would expect but she also spoke about him being undiagnosed bi-polar, something she also suffered with, and how he didn't get any support, who knows if he had a been a little better managed how much more he might have done...RIP JP - i miss your playing...

Love how Lew Soloff takes it upon himself to cue the last high note of the Soul Intro after Jaco refuses to cue it.....

I saw this live, and I remember Jaco throw his bass in the air at the end of his solo encore...

Jaco was such an inspiration to so many. He will always be the greatest musician who has ever lived. I have been a fan of him since I was young. He was so much than just a musician, Jaco was a gift from God and there will never be another like him. Even The Beatles couldn’t hold a candle to him because Jaco was like the human embodiment of a God and they were just people that claimed they were bigger than Jesus. It’s amazing to be named after him. When I listen to his music, I feel more confident about myself and think more about the best to come.

This makes me smile... Jaco all taped up and covered in mud.I just wonder what was on his mind earlier that day???

Oh geez.....Gil doesn't know where he is the entire time......so much for the form/changes so the horn soloists just take it totally out. Mud-covered and taped-up Jaco. Total madness. The rained-on audience loves it......

2 bajistas excepcionales: el mencionado Jaco y Mark Egan (ambos tocaron y grabaron con Pat Metheny)

You could really hear the difference between the 1982 and 1984 Japan concerts. The '82 concerts were much tighter, more in-control. Great to see Mark Egan up there with Jaco though. Sadly, I have a feeling that Egan was there to ensure that the bass line remained in case Jaco went too far off the changes. Jaco was very unpredictable by 1984. This was the same year that Jaco got booed off the stage at the Playboy Jazz Festival.

is this why Primus was obsessed with mud?

don't know if this is true, but i read or heard somewhere that near the end of his way too short career, that he was scheduled to play and he was playing all right; playing outside on the mud. kept the band and the audience waiting until he was finished and ready to perform. this looks like it may have been the incident in question. it was during the time of the beginning of his decline.
