Wonderful lecture! Thank you. Grundtvig deserves more "cloud" among educators outside Denmark. What I personally got from Grundtvig (and his "mate" Christen Kold): When parents moan that their 6 or 7 years old kids haven't learnt to read, and I ask them WHAT they want their child to read? They always look a bit baffled. Do you want her to read the newspaper? Cooking receipts? Her own bedtine story? I hope not! Instruction manuals? What exactly do you want her to read? Let's say, a 16 years old lad, who never cared to learn to read, and who don't speak any German, is given a moped for his birthday. He wants to modify it to go faster, but the manual is in German and he can't read anyway. NOW, give me 2 weeks! TWO WEEKS, and I will take it upon my self to teach this lad to read - and learn German at the same time. THE LIVING WORD IRL: We had the same biology teacher for 4 years, and we litterally never had any books, let alone homework. And yet his pupils stand out with a surpricing amount knowledge, compared to peers from other schools. "How do you know that?" people ask. The answer is simple: "Olav told us!" When he didn't drag us around in the woods or on the beach, he just TOLD us things! He drew things and wrote things on the black board, and forced us to copy it in a note book. By the end of the year we'd written our own biology books - but of cource we never read them 🤣
