The Best Infantry Core in Bolt Action: Armies of Japan

- Jacob and Daniel delve into Armies of Japan and the best core infantry units in the game. We gloss over the internet meta choices and reference a few other subtleties that are often missed. Don't believe us? Tell us why we're wrong!
There are 3 comments made incorrectly in the cast, likely due to tiredness of the hosts!
1) Fanatic/vehicle interactions - whilst the vehicles get fanatic as a unit in the army, they are not a unit of two or more models which removes most of the benefits. However nothing under Fanatic specifically removes it from a vehicle pending future FAQ clarifications.
2) Banzai charge from a transport - this was Dan having a brain freeze. you need to 'see' a target to banzai, so no free dismount.
3) light mortar pins don't stack. somewhere I referenced in error that they did, I meant to say those pins would/could be spread.

Personally, I really rate the Ha-Go. Sure, its AT-gun isn't fantastic... as an AT-gun, but it's no worse at firing high explosive. This, backed up by a hull MG and a rear-turret MG, on a platform that costs 15pts less than a T-60.
The Bamboo spear fighters are 10 to a pack as I just got them to add to my Island Assault Japanese group that I won at a local Bolt Action tournament. But what I'm looking for and they are hard to find in the US is a twin 13.2mm HMG and the Type 98 320mm spigot mortar. Only complaint I have with Warlords new resin is that they are brittle as my one prone Japanese sniper the rifle broke when I was trying to make a good base for my superglue to hold it on the plastic base. No biggie just that I had to reglue it back on in a somewhat proper pose. If it was the original metal all I really needed to do was bend the monopod slightly forward and so the man could of been mated up with the base.
Wow, Bill Paxton plays Bolt Action?!?! Awesome! Great vid, we have about 4 or 5 Japanese players now, much of this is very applicable, great job!
I've never had that comparison I had to look him up. After doing so, fair play to you 😆
@@WesternTabletop thanks man! He was a good actor and a top guy by all accounts, so a big moustache for you to fill! The only guy to be killed by an Alien, Predator and a Terminator and probably one of the most quoted guys ever. Thanks for the vids!
Great video guys. Inspired me to try out some other options and choices I hadn't considered before. Couple of points that aren't quite right though. 1) When a unit is down to a single model it loses fanatic so no fanatic tanks unfortunately. 2) You cant bAnzai out of a transport as bAnzai requires line of sight to a target (which units in vehicles or off table don't have) 3)if 3 light mortars from the same squad hit a single target you don't get 3xd2 pins you pick the highest result of those rolls and only apply that.
That said really comprehensive guide to the options Japan has on offer and I think I'll be hunting for some new transports - not main Japanese book but the unmounted cavalry tough fighters are looking great armoured transport fillers.
Thanks Tzarken!
I'll freely admit the vehicle/fanatic interaction is tenuous at best, however generally doesn't come up. The banzai charge you are absolutely correct, I caught this in the edit but couldn't splice the audio well enough to remove - should have added a show note (will do so). The three mortars definitely don't 'stack pins' so I must have misspoke there. Trials of late recording. Having taken 10 to an event recently the value definitely adds up fast though!
Lmao its bAnzai guys. Bonsai is a small tree
I always thought that the Manchukuo cavalry was the best assault infantry the japanese have... 11pts Fncs + Tough Fighters is a bit 2 much for most armies to deal with
They are quite effective, however we haven't included them under the traditional 'infantry' type for the episode. A bit of poetic license as we do know from a rules point of view they are infantry.
They are infantry. They only become cavalry if you buy them horses
How would you guys build a Japanese list based on the Adepticon Combat Patrol rule set? I notice no one took Japanese for that event so wondered if you could do a quick video with a few of your ideas on lists and maybe why you feel no one took them.
I reckon we could look at that.
1:57:15 I thought the SU-76 was 8+ aswell
Hey, I know these guys 👍
