Usually I would have a two third Infantry squads as regulars. Thanks for this guide.

So I've played Bolt Action for two years but I've played a lot in that time. Average two to three games a week. Regular units are your bread and butter. When running my British I often take two smaller veteran units of paratroopers or engineers then almost everything else is regular except for small teams like piats, flamethrowers or snipers. I'll pretty much never run a vehicle veteran for the reasons you mentioned.

Good video mate, as I play a lot but mostly thematic games, so not competitive. I field them a lot and they work very well.

Thank you so much for all the bolt action content, keep up the hard work.
Perhaps a video on air/artillery observers would be nice. How they work, how to use them, what your gripes with them are, and how you would fix them.
    Thanks

Nice Video! I would say that regular troops are definetly my default infantry in a good list. The exeption are Veteran units with Special rules like para troopers or gurkhas etc. Most of the Time, regular troops are the rifle shooting backbown of my force and paratroopers are sitting on one objective.

I would not call myself an experienced player as such, but got a handful of games under my belt now. For my army, all my infantry units (squads of men) are all veterans and all my other units (snipers, officers, Tanks, Teams, etc) are all regulars. I find this is a nice balance as its often harder to hit the other units as they are small teams generally or armoured, and for my squads which would be easier to hit I make them more difficult to kill instead.

Great video. One point I disagree about... mortar teams should Not be taken as inexperienced, because you cannot get a spotter at that level. Without a spotter they will need line of sight.

I agree 100%. I specifically say in my inexp video to avoid doing such.

actually I wholly disagree. Taking a Medium Mortar with a spotter is a powerful tool but the point difference between an iexp. mortar team is quite big and they all hit on a 6 anyway (until they start "zooming-in". So having a 35 point unit sit 60' away from the enemy fire and making some lucky rolls is often quite worth it (in my opinion). Not saying that regular mortars with spotters are not worth taking, quite the opposite they are very good but inexperienced mortars are strong and worth it in their own way.

@@temaraan I think the best thing about a spotter is negating counterplay from other mortars and snipers.

Hi, great channel and been following your videos for a while. Really like the vibe and the discussion. Mostly I agree with your regarding regulars however there is one thing. Why would you equip your NCO with a smg if all the squad is equipped with rifles / LMG(s)? Essentially you are limiting 1 shot of a long shooting purpose unit as most of the time the said NCO will not be in range of your normal firing squad and if he is close enough to shoot with his 12" range then it begs the question why is the long range squad so close to the enemy in the first place? Just my opinion but I do find mixing different weapon types long range vs assault weapons is a tad wasteful in this game.
One thing I do think worth pointing about in regards to the regulars is the removal of the NCO. Quite a devastating thing to do is to kill the NCO with a sniper (or an exceptional damage source) and then target the same squad with another shot thus creating a -3 moral check penalty (2 for pins and 1 from the removal of the NCO). Rallying is good but again I think the -1 applies (from the removed NCO) so that is a devastating strategy against regular infantry.
I usually run 50 /50 infantry with regulars and veterans but given that I am a Soviet player I do tend to use the Commissars and run the inexperienced units as well in the mix for the dice pool. Regarding your analysis of the inexperienced units I agree mostly with a few exceptional cases such as the Japanese Kempetai officer and when run with the new Soviet Commissars that remove the -1 to hit from the said units. But green inexp. units are always a nice gamble to field.
Thank you for the videos, and keep up the good work )))
    Regarding your questions

Hmmm I think LMGs are rarely worth taking on regulars because of their points inefficiency, I personally only take LMGs on veterans or regular units that have special rules to make them worth like the French. Quite an important point to know about the game because you can't unmake your infantry after they have been built.

    • @temaraan
      @temaraan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

There is a pro and a con to LMGs. Disregarding the obvious German / Hungarian LMG advantage of the extra shot at the base level (for everyone lese) you pay the same amount of points with regulars 4 guys vs 2 guys LMG set-up buuut with a 36" range. Thus you have 12" longer range while losing out on two lives. Additionally the lmg guy is subject to snipers and exceptional damage risk but that is up for the player to actually weigh the risks. I myself quite like the LMGs on my soviets due to the increased range and in fact include them quite often. Sometimes 2 in one infantry unit as well.
Noting that what you wrote about the veterans is true that equipping a veteran with a LMG is cost effective as 4 veterans equal 52 points while 2 veterans LMG set-up is a total of 46 points. This way you are paying less points per shot.

      Yeah I pretty much agree
