  • In this interview, Geoffrey Woo and Dr Paul Mason candidly discuss failures of nutritional research of which many doctors are unaware. Problems with the distortion and misrepentation of research to both the scientific community and public are covered, as are new research on vegan diets. Dr Mason also covers the debate around LDL cholesterol and provides a simple explanation for when it might be an issue.
    Tickets are now available for Low Carb All Stars 2021, a two day online conference featuring a stellar cast of presenters. It will be held on June 19th and 20th, with live Q+A sessions across three time zones.

    At 28:30 in, the brilliant Dr. Mason makes the case that patients with higher LDL can experience greater regression of arterial plaques compared to patients with lower LDL. So tell me again why I, who got a very high CAC score two years ago (I'd been eating low-fat for 20 years, thinking it was a GOOD idea, not understanding that low-fat is high-carb is hyperinsulinemia is insulin resistance is coronary artery disease) and then went strict LCHF, sharply lowering my trygs and raising my HDL (and raising my LDL!), would consent to taking a med - statins - that would lower my LDL?! Every cardiologist I've ever met, and boy have I met many in recent years, pushes me to take statins to screw with my liver so as to lower my LDL so....... they can feel better about themselves. I could ask my current cardiologist to watch this vid, but it would be fruitless. He, like every single cardiologist I've encountered, cares not about root-cause (nutritional) approach, is all in for pharma approach, wants to take LDL down to near zero with PCSK9 inhibitors. Improper nutrition - consumption of two things our bodies were not evolved to handle/process - seed oils and chronic excess carbs - is what causes heart disease. Try telling that to a cardiologist.
    Are you young, and wanting to avoid the heart disease your father/uncle/grandfather had? Don't go low-fat, go low-carb. Cut out seed oils and carbs - grains, most fruits, sugars, starches. That'll leave you eating meats, fatty fish, eggs, greens, nuts, cheeses, yogurts... And move your bod. And ignore your 40-years-behind-the-curve docs.

  • @Turbo2640
    @Turbo2640 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Excellent discussion, as always. Eminence, ego and hubris have always been problems in the medical profession but "evidence" is not a simple solution. The movement referred to as "evidence based medicine," for example, is rather corrupted and far from the solution it may sound to some. So-called "medical science" is effectively experienced as virtually a religion. People "believe" in science rather than see it as a rational and disciplined practice of generating and refining empirical knowledge. Unfortunately, we see little real change in medical education, so those who find their way into truly effective (i.e. revolutionary!!) clinical practice -- like yours Paul! -- will continue to face barriers and a need to first unlearn a great deal of rubbish. What a tragedy! There are too many vested interests, too much politics, and too little critical thinking. Still, there are some positive and constructive signs, so we live in hope.

    I’m trying to decide whether to tell my doctor I have been on a keto diet for a while or not. He does a full set of blood tests each year but missed last year for obvious reasons. I know my fasting glucose will be highlighted as I now have what’s called ‘adaptive glucose sparing’ which is also called ‘physiological insulin resistance’. I assume with all the fat I eat that my LDL will be high too. Whilst I understand the reasons behind these things, it might be too much to hope that my doctor does. The last thing I want is to be prescribed Metformin and a statin. What do you think about keeping your doctor informed of your keto diet? Currently, I’m going with silence and seeing what happens, but that might mean he will need to be persuaded to get my HOMA-IR and be convinced to get me a CAC test.

    Can you please ask Virta Health when are they going to publish their results of the third year of their study?
    Can you please ask Dr. Mason if he knows anything? Is Virta Health delaying the publication of their results?
    I think yes.
    It is as simple as observing the detail of their graphs in the 1 year paper. And compare it to the gross lack of detail in their graphs of the second year paper. Their curves of the first year paper were already showing signs of "U" shaped response in time, and they intentionally removed those U shaped graphs in the 2nd year paper.
    Can you please ask Dr. Mason about that?
    I already asked Virta an Mason and no answer was given. I know Hallbergh is sick, and the pandemic disturbed all processes. But still I trully believe Virta is delaying the publication of the third year results.
    I hope you can track this question on both Virta and Mason.
    And do not get me wrong, I'm low carb myself and, fortunately, reversed my diabetes. But what I do not like is the use of "makeup" in scientific papers to highlight as big, not very big findings. And for diminish/dilute findings contrary to what researchers expect. Exactly what Mason has talked about. Exactly what we are seeing in the Virta trial reporting.

    In light of all of the fundamental carbon bond chemistry unequivocally confirming the superiority of saturated fats over unsaturated fats (especially highly unsaturated ones that have been isolated from the matrix protecting them) as a dietary source of energy, what can we say about the attempts at protecting things like fish oil with the re-addition of antioxidants, in a last ditch effort to attenuate oxidation? Could such measures even begin to compensate for their fragility?
    Or, is this call to avoid unsaturated fats relevant not only to the seed oils, but really any processed oils including those of marine sources? A call to sourcing foods in fresh and whole form, at least where food sources of essential polyunsaturated fats [...fatty acids] are concened?
    Interpretations of the data (and indeed even the methods used to obtain the data in the first place) concerning oxidation in capsules appear to be conflicting. I suspect it would become quickly evident that there is after all no conflict once methods are examined and the accurate and meaningful data are extracted out.

    An even bigger problem occurs when the entire medical staff answers to national guidelines/hospital guidelines and claims to having to be evidence based . No matter they don’t know the data and the data is invented to benefit big pharmaceutical companies . So the patient that knows how they feel before and now feel worse is NOT listened to because they don’t have answers . Generalised guidelines cannot cover the actual INDIVIDUAL patient unless the person is standardised too. I am living in Sweden and I have lost all faith in the medical business here. Here the science has become blinds towards reality . I refer to all you YT doctors with the science and experience and the common sense and they go into lock down . Look at reality and after go to the science to see if all questions are answered and then question the answers .
    My wife is just now diagnosed with diabetes . I have studied on line (Paul Mason, Ken Berry and many more ) and I tell her no meds but strict KETO . I asked her oncologist about KETO and the fact they put all patients on KETO in the M D Anderson Center . Her answer was did I have any Swedish science ??? The arrogance . To my mind M D Anderson is the most successful Center in the world . Next thing I hear is that my wife is diagnosed with diabetes ( I have claimed she had some sort of metabolical syndrome for a long time - but hell I am not a doctor . Well maybe that is a very good thing combined with actual intelligence . You YT docs make sense and back it up with the data . Further more you rebuke the fake science like Ansel Keys and his likes . THANK YOU 🙏

    Paul Mason answered a question I had for a while. It seems that type 2 diabetes is fully reversible. Tim Noakes implied you just manage it. He said, you use HBA1C to measure if you are managing it well, and many people have well managed HBA1C which is fully normal. But he rejects glucose tolerance test because he says it's intolerable. But Tim Noakes is wrong.

    • @tiredandwantsanap
      @tiredandwantsanap 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe Dr. Noakes is cautious to say that diabetes is reversible because some diabetics who go on LCHF diets and manage their blood sugar in the normal range will still have large spikes in blood sugar if given a glucose tolerance test or a large amount of sugar. While their A1C is normal, their glucose response to sugar is still abnormal, whereas a non diabetic person might be able to maintain normal blood sugars when given a large sugar load. Long-term could diabetes truly be reversible with LCHF? Only time will tell.

    • @Dan-gs3kg
      @Dan-gs3kg 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tiredandwantsanap from what was stated, diabetics are heavily glucose unstable. Otherwise, the main mechanism of T2D is the loss of insulin production as a result of fat damage on the pancreas and in general, insulin resistance. Fatty liver damage is a thing, but is also solved by the same method, simply preventing de novo lipogenesis long enough for the pancreas and liver to export all the fat, then recover, and so that the cells can stop being so insulin resistant.

    13:10 Perfect statement. It eccos the truth of all. The way the whole system of control is in place. It makes the process so obvious, there is no stopping our awareness. You guys are simply the best.
    It sounds like when people say "empty space" space is not empty. and if it was, there would be nothing to call space. Shadows dont exist. There are no charge carrying particles. Wireless power transfer like an Iphone or android phone charger, there are no fantacy particles traveling anywhere. light does not emit. Light , is an Ether perturbation. There is no speed of light but a rate of induction.
    People with higher Cholesterol live longer.
    So much to Unlearn.

    Is insulin resistance the core issue or is it also more of an indicator or the consequence of something more fundamental?

    • @GMAAndy333
      @GMAAndy333 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Before diabetes there is elevated insulin levels. High levels of insulin result in insulin resistance. Increased insulin and insulin resistance results in fatty liver and less efficient glucose utilization among other problems.

      What comes before Hyperinsulinemia?
      The diet was wrong for years, too high in carbs, processed seed oils, processed foods, non nutritive foods, junk food, alcohol, sugars, fructose, flour, grains, anti-nutrients, hidden sugars; like with S.A.D. (diet).

    the NP that is doing my TRT told me if I cant get my HDL up she will drop my testosterone dose because I will get cardiovascular disease. I pointed out that I dropped my triglycerides from an astonishing 8 to 1 (1.7 being the max on this scale) and she said "yes, thats good... be sure to take your omega 3 supplements, 4000mg a day".

    the type 2 diabetics that cured their disease, were they long time diabetics, insulin dependant type two? Can you bring beta cells back to life after you have been told they are "dead"?

    • @marlenegold280

      Ask for a copy of your lab test results including reference ranges.
      Then you’ll know if they even did the right lab tests to back up their claim.
      The doctor show be able to show you the data, based on the right tests.

    • @barblacy619
      @barblacy619 ปีที่แล้ว

      Takes longer for longer term diabetics to heal but they do if consistent; not heard any information about resurrection of beta cells. But even if you are insulin dependent the lower the insulin you inject the less damage to your body. LCHF diets are just healthy.

      Skeptics are good...I only ask you also should be skeptical of your nutritional “facts” that you were taught! I was “taught” traditional nutrition also. After my father died (as an insulin diabetic) and I when was diagnosed as type 2 diabetic which I took as a (slow) death sentence that I witnessed in my father’s slow death. Luckily a friend lost weight with low carb, I tried it and lost weight also... and lowered my A1c to 5.3...my doctor was amazed and said it was the weight loss...what ever you say doc! Btw my doctor before said diabetes was a chronic incurable disease, but somehow “forgot” to tell me going really low carb seems to put diabetes in remission! Think for yourself!!!

    That's me in my profile picture. I was able to get my gut super-slim by cutting saturated fats way down. There's always boasting and insistence behind "studies," while people live their lives getting results doing exactly what the studies claim shouldn't work. I'm not vegan btw, but I know of other vegans who have the same body style as myself. The "studies" didn't include ME.
