You like this, you should absolutely check out The Longest Journey : Heathen Throne pt 2 (including Tuuman Virran Taa) by Ensiferum. It’s pure, charge into battle glory, it’s huge and orchestral as well with several movements. The vocalist for Wintersun was Ensiferum’s original vocalist/lead guitarist, and on the studio version of the track you just did, the members of Ensiferum came in to do the big gang Vocals near the end.
Wintersun is absolutely amazing!! You should check out the forest that weeps. The solo section “jam” that they do is absolutely nuts. They have been a favorite of mine for the past 20+ years with their first self titled album.
The guys from Wintersun are all absolutely amazing musicians and masters of their craft.. Jari, the lead vocalist/guitarist is the heart and soul of the band, composing everything himself and playing everything except the drums on recordings. Jari's also a notorious perfectionist, and has a thing for very complex arrangements. Time II (the latter half of the Time album which had to be split back in 2012) still isn't out, apparently in part because the songs have so many tracks his computer and audio engineering software just can't handle it.
When listening to the full album, I like how the previous song (first on the album) is basically a 4 minute lead-in to Sons of Winter and Stars. I would recommend to anyone to listen through the entire album in one sitting, though, as it all flows together so well.
There is a genre for 'opera metal', most of the bands you are naming are in it. It's called, "symphonic metal" Google it for other bands that mix symphony and orchestral themes into a metal song.
I know everyone will suggest Ayreon for a opera feel, but for me the band that comes to mind is Blind Guardian! Any song from their "Night at the Opera" album is wonderful, though the single everyone remembers is "Battlefield". Give them a try!
Specifically I would highly recommend "And then there was silence " from that album. th-cam.com/video/HcRIGCmCoZA/w-d-xo.html Secondly, their song "wheel of Time" th-cam.com/video/wJtFXTIEwYQ/w-d-xo.html (not to mention the book series it's inspired by, but that's way off topic here! Lol)
So glad you like these guys, man. I was blown away by this song the first time I heard it. The musicianship is just insane, and the song really takes you on a journey. :)
I really liked the style of this video. Stops were maybe a tad long, but I really liked the longer stops and the depth of your analysis, and you let the song play out for long sections too, which was great. The tiny rewind before continuing was perfect. I'm sure that with a song as long and as complex as this one that was the reason it sometimes felt that the stops were a little long, so I imagine with something not as insane as this epic metal monstrosity (which I mean in the best way possible) it will work out perfectly. Keep up the great work and I love that you're trying out tweaks! The product pitch on the headphones almost gave me a heart attack at first, but was HILARIOUS. You even got the editing down for that joke, it was perfect! p.s. I would hesitate to put Devin's stuff in the epic metal genre, but I definitely get that a lot of the production style and studio work is very similar, but thats just cuz Devi is a bit nuts with his wall of sound lol -sincerely, A Devin Townsend nerd who isn't that into epic metal
Wintersun shared this on their official facebook page ! Thanks for the reacts, i've made so many great discoveries since i follow this channel, keep up !
Just check out Rhapsody! Listen to Gargoyles, Angels of Darkness. Luca Turilli is a brilliant composer and the classical guitar intro is simply beautiful. They are the definition of symphonic epic metal and they set the standard!
Speaking of cheesy symphonic power metal, Avantasia's The Seven Angels is fantastic too. Edit: Also, the first 2 Avantasia albums are actually called "The Metal Opera" and "The Metal Opera Part II" and they are featuring many high profile artists like Michael Kiske of Helloween, Kai Hansen of Helloween and Gamma Ray, and Sharon den Adel of Within Temptation.
@@racewiththefalcons1 I'm pretty sure they all did. Listening to Luca's solo albums, I know they both had a hand in the arrangements. Just incredible albums all the way around.
Great to see such a deep and insightful reaction to these guys, thanks! Their “Loneliness (Winter)” is one of the most beautiful ballads ever, there’s a lyric video, very atmospheric; so think you’d love it.
I would highly recommend another Finnish band Moonsorrow and their song Ruttolehto. Although everything they have released is top notch, I especially love this song and their amazing use of vocals in it.
Great reaction, interesting to see your response to the incredibly powerful layers and melodies in the song. Jari Mäenpäa is a musical genius. Wintersun are one of my favourite bands of all time.
That low "satanic" voice you heard is Jukka, the bassist, and not a prerecorded track, he probably has one of the best deep background vocals in the scene
Nothing wrong with the stops. You are able to direct me to appreciate things I normally would never hear/catch on my own. Thanks, Nightwish Army, Tucson Chapter
YES! Thank you so much for giving this one a listen! I love your description of a 'metal theater' or 'rock opera,' that's exactly what the vibe is to me. It's such a prime example of what you can get with a fusion of metal and classical/orchestral composition.
I'm still here and I watch every episode every day. Thank you immensely for doing this. I've been finding some influences from the music you've been showcasing working its way into my own drumming. And if that's not the magic of what an Education channel should be, I don't understand what TH-cam WILL recognize.
Glad you finally got to experience these guys!! Their catalog runs deep. Loneliness really does give a different realm of Jaris abilities! Keep on rollin!!🤙🤙✌✌

If you're not adverse to the idea, I would highly suggest tracking down the lossless audio of the entire Time I album by Wintersun and doing a full reaction video to the whole album front to back. It's part 1 of a two part piece and legend has it that some of the songs contain over 200 individual tracks within the mix. Wintersun are well known for their pristine studio engineering and length between releases due to their perfectionist attitude. Some extremely impressive studio magic done on there. One of the songs on the album is almost entirely made up of notes that have been recorded separately, played in reversed, and then compiled into a string of arpeggios to make the listener feel as though they are travelling back in time to a distant land. Quite spectacular stuff, and either way I enjoyed this video anyway 🤘🙂
Wow, finally somebody to make a full profesional analysis on a song, that's quite more different than: Wow, that's super cool, epic, amazing etc. Thank you so much for doing this, it means a lot for a real fan :D *Do you know, btw that the vocalist is the one who compozed all the music, except for the drums?
THIS WAS THE FIRST SHOW I EVER WENT TO 12 YEARS AGO! I had no idea who they were but a high school friend dragged me to their show in Costa Mesa, CA. The Odyssey as an Encore was so fucking EPIC!
I do like your way to do your site. As a "one ear ama" it´s nice to listen people who understand how the music is made. And as a native Finnish I of course like Wintersun n Nightwish. So far away from the culture you´re living in, it is however nice to note that music connects people. Stay safe there.
Definitely donated. I've listened to many, many, reactions on this peace. Your commentary was crazy interesting. Listened to the end. Thanks for sharing your experience In answer to your question, I prefer during-the-song breakdowns than dumps at the end, mainly because my memory isn't that good so it's easier to match up the comments.
I imagine it's been suggested plenty of times before, but Leprous - The Sky Is Red. Or anything by Leprous really, I think you'll be blown away! Thank you for helping me expand my musical tastes by the way!
Thank you! I’m so glad you reacted to this. Wintersun is one of the best bands most people haven’t heard of, and they’re another example of absolutely brilliant Finnish metal. Really, some of the very best metal out there (I’d throw Nightwish into that mix as well) really does come from Finland. One of the metal sub-genres Jari Mäenpää, the singer and composer for Wintersun, lists for his music is “epic metal,” which absolutely fits. He used to be in the Swedish folk metal band, Ensiferum, but he left the band and started Wintersun when he started investing more time into the music that would eventually be written for Wintersun’s music. Jari Mäenpää is a badass. He screams and sings despite missing a quarter of one of his lungs, which had to be removed due to a battle with tuberculosis he contracted while serving in the Finnish military. I’m pretty sure it was mandatory service, similar to what Israel does. Anyway, he also write all of the music, except for the drum parts, which until recently (I think) was written by Kai Hahto, the current drummer for Nightwish. For his album recordings, Jari’s been known to use up to at least 200 tracks for some of his songs. Jari mentioned in his documentary on the production of his “The Seasons” album that his mind is always full to the brim of musical ideas, and the music is always full and complex like the layering he accomplishes in his music. Although there is so much layering in his music, it never sounds overdone; it always sounds just right for what he’s trying to accomplish. One thing I personally like in this song is how, yes, he sings the melody, but when he’s screaming the guitars will take over that very same melody. It’s a small thing, but it’s so effective. The Sons of Winter and Stars is an epic metal masterpiece, and just about everyone who listens to it ends up being _very_ impressed by it and the band itself. I am so happy music reaction channels like yours are listening to them. I hope you’ll listen to more of them. They have two more songs recorded as live rehearsals from I think this very same session. Both are worth listening to and offer even more range and variety from Jari as a vocalist and as a composer. I don’t know why, but Finland has some of them best metal out there, and Wintersun is among the very best in Finland, I think. You’ve mentioned how the music in this song is quite cinema-worthy, and really, I’d love to hear music like this in film. This combination of symphonic music and metal, and when it already sounds epic, add that to what’s happening on screen, and the whole experience will surely be completely memorable.
Just to clarify, Ensiferum is a Finnish band and Jari left the band due to scheduled studio recordings for the Wintersun album overlapping with Ensiferum touring plans.
they released the isolated orchestration/synth layer of the song a few years ago. You should listen to that, soooo much of the composition is buried under the metal instruments, it's really worth a listen
My 5 year old daughter discovered the nightmare before christmas recently had on repeat for about 3 weeks solid, and having listened to the music recently I agree with you on the similarities on the part you highlighted, especially on anything sally sings in the film, very melancholic. The best piece of writing for me by wintersun for me is 6:20 - 7:08 on the song Starchild, you have to listen harder for the orchestrations but combined with the lyrics its that signature wintersun melancholy sound.
Clicked so fast on this one! There's so much to unpack in this one. Gush all you want, this song deserves it! Would love to see you "de-compose" Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner by Iron Maiden. The extra stops work great, and this song requires it.
Now this was a good reaction video! Music pieces like this (not going to call it a song..) kind of deserve someone analysing them through and through. Every note is there for a purpose, just listening through and saying "that was awesome" does not really do them justice.
I come here for the Tool - and I am so happy to see you touch on Wintersun. Starchild is in dire need of a reaction from you! One of the first epic journeys Jari has taken us on. Shit, The forest seasons needs a front to back listen from you. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but from a composition stand point, it's up there.
The metal genre has really become the genre of "musicians/composers" over the past couple of decades now. You can especially see it when there are just such a ridiculous amount of "sub genres" within metal. Also, I have also heard the expression that "metal is the new jazz" due to the virtuosity you see from the musicians, particularly from sub genres such as progressive metal and tech/death metal.
I prefer to just link to Wikipedia article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_genres If you print that page, just the Table of Contents for the labels of genres goes over two pages!
The wintersun harmonies are a thing of beauty.
Truuue!
Agreed

OMG Wintersun!!! I can’t stand how long they take to put music out, but I have to admit that Time 1 was a fantastic album. This song is beyond epic
Unpacking all the details and nuances is always appreciated!
There is a genre for 'opera metal', most of the bands you are naming are in it. It's called, "symphonic metal" Google it for other bands that mix symphony and orchestral themes into a metal song.
Melodic Death Metal.
Death and the Healing, Loneliness and Time are all cracking tracks worthy of your next reaction.
Native Construct is another solid group that deserves a listen at some point
Stops were spot on and didn’t spoil the momentum too much. Now Time from the same set, please!
This is very.... epic! Makes me want to go on a quest, lol!
Try a band called Slice the Cake "Odyssey to the West" 😉
26:05 does this guy not now Avantasia or Yngwie?
So awesome to see some Wintersun! You're doing songs that other generic reaction channels wouldn't touch, that's amazing!
I know everyone will suggest Ayreon for a opera feel, but for me the band that comes to mind is Blind Guardian! Any song from their "Night at the Opera" album is wonderful, though the single everyone remembers is "Battlefield". Give them a try!
Specifically I would highly recommend "And then there was silence " from that album. th-cam.com/video/HcRIGCmCoZA/w-d-xo.html
Secondly, their song "wheel of Time" th-cam.com/video/wJtFXTIEwYQ/w-d-xo.html
(not to mention the book series it's inspired by, but that's way off topic here! Lol)
Not to mention Blind Guardian Twilight Orchestra. Hansi is brilliant
Amazing song and breakdown
More Wintersun!
Loneliness
or
Sleeping Stars
This is musicians playing to perfection.... WE ARE!!!!
Just check out Rhapsody! Listen to Gargoyles, Angels of Darkness. Luca Turilli is a brilliant composer and the classical guitar intro is simply beautiful. They are the definition of symphonic epic metal and they set the standard!
Link: th-cam.com/video/2kaQ51KFjis/w-d-xo.html
Speaking of cheesy symphonic power metal, Avantasia's The Seven Angels is fantastic too.
Edit: Also, the first 2 Avantasia albums are actually called "The Metal Opera" and "The Metal Opera Part II" and they are featuring many high profile artists like Michael Kiske of Helloween, Kai Hansen of Helloween and Gamma Ray, and Sharon den Adel of Within Temptation.
Rhapsody is such a amazing band and they deserve more attention.
Didn't Staropoli do most of the orchestral arrangements?
@@racewiththefalcons1
I'm pretty sure they all did. Listening to Luca's solo albums, I know they both had a hand in the arrangements. Just incredible albums all the way around.
Thank you very much for this reaction. Its my favourite band since 2004 when I was 16
Great to see such a deep and insightful reaction to these guys, thanks! Their “Loneliness (Winter)” is one of the most beautiful ballads ever, there’s a lyric video, very atmospheric; so think you’d love it.
Totally agree. My favorite track somehow
More Wintersun for your 30 day count down. Loneliness or Death and the Healing.
I would highly recommend another Finnish band Moonsorrow and their song Ruttolehto. Although everything they have released is top notch, I especially love this song and their amazing use of vocals in it.
At last, you got into Wintersun. This song is an epic masterpiece, as long as Time.
He did record it, but you see him here singing the other harmony part and not that, so it was added in post.
It‘s not. It‘s Jari‘s.
Every stop between the video is ok. It's really fun and educational when you point out the things. Even the little ones.
Nothing wrong with the stops. You are able to direct me to appreciate things I normally would never hear/catch on my own.
Thanks,
Nightwish Army, Tucson Chapter
27:12 it's so cool when people notice that, most of people doesn't spot that kind of stuff
Thanks for a insightful review of this song, really appreciating it!
This channel is a breath of fresh air !
This is a great song. I'm sure the breakdown will be great too.
YES! Thank you so much for giving this one a listen! I love your description of a 'metal theater' or 'rock opera,' that's exactly what the vibe is to me. It's such a prime example of what you can get with a fusion of metal and classical/orchestral composition.
YESSS!!!! I missed this video, i was one of the people who requested a while back
I loved your excitement through this, bravo!
I've listen to this song hundreds of times and you made me discover new stuff about it. Thank you!! You just got a new subscriber!!! :)
Great job with analizing an epic music. Just tip of a humongous iceberg. As for Metal Opera check out Therion - Dvorak and Verdi "rendition"
Geebz still reminding you to react to the band "Death" 🤘🏼
I'm still here and I watch every episode every day. Thank you immensely for doing this. I've been finding some influences from the music you've been showcasing working its way into my own drumming. And if that's not the magic of what an Education channel should be, I don't understand what TH-cam WILL recognize.
Glad you finally got to experience these guys!! Their catalog runs deep. Loneliness really does give a different realm of Jaris abilities! Keep on rollin!!🤙🤙✌✌
I've been binging your channel for a few days and thinking that you should do a Wintersun video. The TIME album is one of my favorite of all time!
Love your stops. Please continue, very interesting listening to your comments...
As a Finn I have to say Wintersun is one of the most Finnish looking band lmao
Stop whenever you need to...love to hear your thoughts. The drummer Kai is also the current drummer of Nightwish after Jukka had to stop for health reasons. If you haven't already done it, I would love to see you react to Nightwish Song of Myself (Wacken 2013), Elvinjig/Elvenpath (from Buenos Aires), and Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean (also from Buenos Aires)...love listening to your insightful reactions! Checking in from Nightwish Army Alaska US Division. 😜
Great decomposition, I'm glad you are discovering this great music and at the same time putting out your knowledge, really cool
Thank you so much for doing this song! Watching your reactions was amazing to me seeing you hear those amazing transistions and lighting up to them was awesome. I have a feeling you wanted to stop 10x as much as you did when each of those elements came to bear. Again, thank you!
I've heard quite a few reactions to this video, and it was nice to hear things I've never heard before. Great reaction.
Saw them live in 2018... spektacular performance, one of my top 5 live performances i have ever seen..!! Love the band and music .
Saw these guys live with Ne Obliviscaris, fucking unbelievable show
You have to do Soilwork! I'd start with Death in General or Whirl of Pain. Also need to do Black Crown Initiate - Withering Waves.
Oh man I've been waiting for this, Wintersun is definitely fairly unique in the way they go about creating music.
One of my favorite bands, hands down. So stoked to see this.
Oh, I've waited for this. Thank you so much.
Akg sponsor this man please!
Also these guys are one of my favourite melodic death metal bands as their songs sound like thought out compositions :)
Speaking of motives,.a band monuments is a good example for using and writing with motives and themes
Thank you so much for doing this, it means a lot for a real fan :D
*Do you know, btw that the vocalist is the one who compozed all the music, except for the drums?
So stoked you checked this out
Symphony X - The Oddysey! Better than any other SX song. Thanks buddy!
I was going to suggest this myself! Such a good song, and he is obviously willing to sit through longer songs, so there is a chance
I mean I disagree that's their best song, but I think their earlier stuff is a lot more fun to listen to than their newer albums.
Oh yes. Very yes. Side note: got to see Symphony X on that tour and they killed The Odyssey. Breathtaking to hear live.
THIS WAS THE FIRST SHOW I EVER WENT TO 12 YEARS AGO! I had no idea who they were but a high school friend dragged me to their show in Costa Mesa, CA. The Odyssey as an Encore was so fucking EPIC!
@@erikgutierrez3613 Was Into Eternity on the tour with them? Those guys ripped too
I do like your way to do your site. As a "one ear ama" it´s nice
to listen people who understand how the music is made.
And as a native Finnish I of course like Wintersun n Nightwish.
So far away from the culture you´re living in, it is however nice
to note that music connects people. Stay safe there.
STRAPPING YOUNG LAD!
Definitely donated. I've listened to many, many, reactions on this peace. Your commentary was crazy interesting. Listened to the end. Thanks for sharing your experience
In answer to your question, I prefer during-the-song breakdowns than dumps at the end, mainly because my memory isn't that good so it's easier to match up the comments.
Great video. Really appreciate the couple little rewinds to hear the little things you thought were cool (the vocal was freaky deep). Keep it up!
I imagine it's been suggested plenty of times before, but Leprous - The Sky Is Red. Or anything by Leprous really, I think you'll be blown away! Thank you for helping me expand my musical tastes by the way!
Seen these guys a couple of times, first time was in a sweaty bar rammed full with only around 200 people. Probably the best gig I've ever seen!
We 🇫🇮 are Sons & Daughters of 🥶and 🌟 ❤️😁🤘🇫🇮
they released the isolated orchestration/synth layer of the song a few years ago. You should listen to that, soooo much of the composition is buried under the metal instruments, it's really worth a listen
Your reaction is one of the coolest and also informative reactions on the TH-cam.
Great video, man. You pointed out things I never noticed before. And I bought this record the year it was released
I bet it has already been suggested, but you would absolutely love Leprous. I'd suggest, composition wise, maybe Distant Bells or The sky is red.
Wintersun is great! Saw them live in Oslo in 2018, it was epic!
Slice The Cake - Stone and Silver Part 1 - The Mountains of Man
Pretty please
Now this was a good reaction video!
Music pieces like this (not going to call it a song..) kind of deserve someone analysing them through and through.
Every note is there for a purpose, just listening through and saying "that was awesome" does not really do them justice.
Almost 100k subs, wow that escalated quickly! Still remember your first video not so long ago
Fan base can be kinda toxic sometimes. Sometimes.
@@demonhunterC Yea that's true for most things these days though, not just metal...or music in general.
@@demonhunterC gatekeeping is necessary
I prefer to just link to Wikipedia article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_genres
If you print that page, just the Table of Contents for the labels of genres goes over two pages!
@@demonhunterC Name a fan base that isn’t. Every genre has pretentious gatekeepers who smell their own farts.
I was waiting for this reaction! I knew you would like it.
