For those who insist on compairing Kai with Nightwish's former drummer Jukka - You have to read Kai in a different way, Jukka was the showman while Kai is more conservative in how he moves around. But look at Kai's face, have you ever seen someone looking so happy when he is banging on everything he has? And the more complicated and intricate it is, the more he smiles and look even happier. He is as exact as an atomic clock. Snoop around a bit here on YT Tank, you can find a fairly good number of drum cam videos with Kai. Cheers / B.
@@mbo191 Kai is also very trained in the trajectories of drumming to be able to do stuff efficiently, with presicion and endurance. Especially with the speedier parts, stuff like that becomes crucial.
Speaking as an American who loves Metallica and Pantera, Europe has been making the best metal for quite some time. In my humble opinion. Great reaction.
I keep telling people who knows am a metalhead the same thing, they ask me if I listen to Slayer or Metallica and I mean, I occasionally listen to those bands but my thing is the European metal for a long time, the USA fell behind long time ago when it comes to metal, there are some exceptions but we don't have a Wintersun, a Nightwish or a Gojira type of band. Sweden, Finland, Norway and Germany are ahead now.
Don't get me wrong, I love the old school American death metal bands like Morbid Angel, Death, and Obituary. But those were never bands I could listen to every day.

@@TankTheTech Kai posted a new ad on Facebook right now on Thursday. He has a few free weekends in October and some free days in September-October. He tries to get drum students for those times. I don’t know how much he charges for two days but it also includes accommodation and food! If I were a drummer, I would take such an opportunity right away !!!
Why should anyone give u flak for liking this better than NW? Tastes are personal and you still appreciate the musicianship of both so respect where its due. All good imo :) Usually not a fan of harsh vocals but this is so damn good. And Kai.... what a machine

He still is. Kai is enganged in two bands. Just as Marko from Nightwish.... I love both bands dearly. Nightwish wins me with elaborate wordcraft and masterfully created ensenbles and songwriting, Wintersun wins me with the powerful, ferocious energy that somehow makes me long after something I cannot quite define. Both bands make me cry at times (Shoemaker from Nightwish and this very song from Wintersun). Both are equal to me. Equally masterful in their own ways.
I'm so fucking ready! There's no bad album nor a bad Wintersun song and fortunately Kai has been the drummer in the band live and on recordings what immediately means that a new album is guaranteed to be an epic record!
This is what you get when you combine long time veterans of top row Finnish metal bands, all these guys are good as hell and even more, every single one of them.
This was one of the first "harder" metal songs i heard and i was instantly in love with it, i listened to Blind Guardian and Metallica in school when i drifted into the rock/metal crowd and they introduced me to metal. Good times. I can appreciate the beauty in all genres because if you only listen to one genre you miss so much in life. Every music has its place, every mood has its music. I listen to everything that is good doesnt matter if it is electronic, edm, harder techno/drum n bass, 80s rock (my favorite, 80s music in general) even rap sometimes when it is a good song. I think I've listened to this song 3-4 times today (aaaand it never gets old) by different reaction youtube channels. A couple voice coachs, and a former cinema composer who picked apart all the fine orchestral nuances and said their music was cinema worthy. And now this channel, just because I absolutly love seeing people discover Wintersun for the first time, and react with such jaw-dropping surprise to all the different parts, melodies, and compositional layers (upon layers), that went into making this gorgeous masterpiece. For me the transitions with Jari's range from growls to clean vocals is just phenominally flawless. And wonderful Kai.. blast beats for days! These channels focus mainly on analysing the beauty of the music itself, yet they are missing out on the incredibly talented lyrical content...the choir and operatic elements. The stories their songs tell is just as amazing.. A true 'gallop off on a quest' across snow-swept wintery landscapes, this song has always filled my heart to bursting with love and pure enjoyment. One of the most beautifully epic songs you will ever hear in metal.
Yes please!!! "While we sleep" is probably the most popular, but the full potential of the song is prepared for by the opening track from the album Shadows of a Dying Sun, "The Primeval Dark", those two go so well together! There is not a single song on that album which isn't worth to check out...and they don't have just one album ;)

I had the pleasure of seeing Wintersun live before the pandemic. They're incredibly precise playing live (even without Kai). I don't know the name of the other drummer but he killed it. Maybe the best live metal performance I've seen.
Fun fact, Jari used to be the singer of Ensiferum before Petri Lindroos was. Ensiferum being another legendary band from Finland. This man is pure talent.

I firmly believe the only thing that could make this song an even more spiritual experience would be to witness it in a live setting. Truly one of the most mesmerizing pieces of music I have ever heard.
2 more songs from that same studio sessions: - Time - Land of Winter and Sorrow + otherwise Loneliness. Jari (the singer-songwriter) got some injury to his hand, he can't play that well anymore, or at least he wouldn't be able to sing at the same time. So now he just sings, and they got a new guitarist to play his parts, 1st non-Finn in the group. I'm not sure who plays the drums when Kai can't participate, is it a back track. Many parts of this song, like the orchestra, and the choir were a back track, and Jari has made it (mostly?). This band started as his private dream, then he got some other players along, and this particular song he had worked on long - it's like his perfectionist dream - could you imagine :) Jari played and sang earlier in a band called Ensiferum, you may start with Lai Lai Hei (said like Ly Ly hey - compare how you say Kai Hahto). Finnish spelling is like every letter has the same value no matter where it appears in a word - ng is the exception, it's like ng in sing, only double long: namely letters written double, are double long.
So far I haven't seen any good recordings from their concerts, the sound quality doesn't reach close to this level. I don't know if devoted fans can send you links to good concert videos.
They have had several drummers but mostly they stick to Saari Heikki from Finntroll, not easy to find a drummer which can keep up with Kai, but he for sure can ;)
If don't mind a bit crappily mixed or mastered (or both) studio version, I recommend to check out Winter Madness. In my opinion face-melting on par with the Through Fire And Flames solo.

Loved every second! Don't worry I'm late to the party too. Found Wintersun some time last year, and I recommend you check out "Winter Madness" by them. It has probably the most insane metal guitar solo in my opinion, oddly has classical influences. Never in my wildest dreams would I be able to play it let alone come up with it. Blew me away. And i'm pretty sure 90% of the song is blast beats too lol.

Exactly. This video brings me back to a time when I was in a Halloween party and someone put Winter Madness playing in the background. This was somewhere around 2006.. I had to stop everything and find out what this awesome band was. These kind of moments we remember forever, I think.

I knew wintersun since the very beginning. And soon after their first album which is also great btw, they announced that the second album would be called time. And then they made me wait fir 8 freaking years. But this song allone made it worth the wait.such an masterpiece of a song

The lead singer, Jari, also fronted the band Ensiferum before founding Wintersun. Dunno what they have in Finland, but it seems that Finnish drummers are all BEASTS.

Welcome to the world of Finnish metal! I would call myself very fortunate, because when I was a youngling, I saw this band live with this exact composition @ Tuska 2005. I was a fan for a few years prior, but seeing them live was easily the highlight of the whole festival, out of all 25'ish bands that I saw. What a bunch of incredible musicians.

Wintersun is very different from Nightwish, just a different type of masterpiece music writing. While Nightwish is my "happy mood" music, Wintersun speaks to my darker side. I saw them live in Greensboro, NC in 2018 the night same Hurricane Florence hit -- my buddy I was going to go with had to cancel because he had to go evacuate his in-laws from Fayetteville before it flooded. They put on an epic fucking live show in that converted warehouse they played. You should also check out the opening act from that tour, Ne Obliviscaris. They're a progressive extreme metal band from Melbourne, Australia. They have a playthrough video for their song "Curator" that would work well.
Watching this a year after you did, after I just discovered Wintersun this week, they and Nightwish are different rabbit holes. Nightwish have risen in my opinion to one of my top 5 bands of all time, and I’m a Zeppelin, Floyd, Tool guy….. But this song….. it is in a different animal. I heard it like 5 days ago and I kind of thought it was pretty cool but too raw - I’m not generally a fan of overriding harsh vocals. But the fucking song won’t get out of my brain! It’s like it is perfectly constructed. It is fucking epic!!
To really understand the skills of Kai Hahto being the human metronome, see this: th-cam.com/video/xGc9JNP7F4w/w-d-xo.html Basically, Kai didn't hear the first click after a pause in the middle of the song during a Nightwish gig and the whole band started off-sync with the background track. Kai figured it out and come up with a plan to fix the problem without interrupting the song. He played a custom 5/8 fill compared to original version to bring the band back into sync. (The song was Nightwish: Dark Chest of Wonders, last gig of the world tour in 2015.) Think about that, he was able to notice the problem, compute the time difference needed and come up with a custom fill to fix the problem in time before the chorus which would make the problem really audible. And all that while playing with the band live!
I ussually see a lot of reactions. Don't know why but I like how people gets amazed by all these amazing artists. But I don't stand how fake a bunch of this reactions are. I love this channel because the "reactioner" feels it. Genuine reaction. And it is clear he loves rock/metal/... Kudos!

Hey man just want to congratulate you for your work and thank you for the honest reactions! I really had the exact same reactions you had while hearing Wintersun for the first time (in my case when I was 18) (I'm 31 now)... It change my mind about everything I've ever heard (even knowing other great bands like Rush, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Queen, Pink Floyd...). All the newer great bands I was lucky to know back then were practically forgotten during the time their first cd lasts... I felt blown away (I also play drums)... Good vibes from Mexico!

I love both bands dearly. Nightwish wins me with elaborate wordcraft and masterfully created ensenbles and songwriting, Wintersun wins me with the powerful, ferocious energy that somehow makes me long after something I cannot quite define. Both bands make me cry at times (Shoemaker from Nightwish and this very song from Wintersun). Both are equal to me. Equally masterful in their own ways.
+ Kai has been playing with bands like swallow the sun.
I'm just hoping for a collaboration between both bands.

It's going to be a tough one with Wintersun and Nightwish. Jari and Tuomas are both musical geniuses and both a bit insane.
This is what you get when you combine long time veterans of top row Finnish metal bands, all these guys are good as hell and even more, every single one of them.
This was one of the first "harder" metal songs i heard and i was instantly in love with it, i listened to Blind Guardian and Metallica in school when i drifted into the rock/metal crowd and they introduced me to metal. Good times. I can appreciate the beauty in all genres because if you only listen to one genre you miss so much in life. Every music has its place, every mood has its music. I listen to everything that is good doesnt matter if it is electronic, edm, harder techno/drum n bass, 80s rock (my favorite, 80s music in general) even rap sometimes when it is a good song. And i love classical music too. Greetings from Germany!

I think I've listened to this song 3-4 times today (aaaand it never gets old) by different reaction youtube channels. A couple voice coachs, and a former cinema composer who picked apart all the fine orchestral nuances and said their music was cinema worthy. And now this channel, just because I absolutly love seeing people discover Wintersun for the first time, and react with such jaw-dropping surprise to all the different parts, melodies, and compositional layers (upon layers), that went into making this gorgeous masterpiece. For me the transitions with Jari's range from growls to clean vocals is just phenominally flawless. And wonderful Kai.. blast beats for days! These channels focus mainly on analysing the beauty of the music itself, yet they are missing out on the incredibly talented lyrical content...the choir and operatic elements. The stories their songs tell is just as amazing.. A true 'gallop off on a quest' across snow-swept wintery landscapes, this song has always filled my heart to bursting with love and pure enjoyment. One of the most beautifully epic songs you will ever hear in metal.

"While we sleep" is probably the most popular, but the full potential of the song is prepared for by the opening track from the album Shadows of a Dying Sun, "The Primeval Dark", those two go so well together! There is not a single song on that album which isn't worth to check out...and they don't have just one album ;)

I had the pleasure of seeing Wintersun live before the pandemic. They're incredibly precise playing live (even without Kai). I don't know the name of the other drummer but he killed it. Maybe the best live metal performance I've seen.
Fun fact, Jari used to be the singer of Ensiferum before Petri Lindroos was. Ensiferum being another legendary band from Finland. This man is pure talent.

I firmly believe the only thing that could make this song an even more spiritual experience would be to witness it in a live setting. Truly one of the most mesmerizing pieces of music I have ever heard.

Jari (the singer-songwriter) got some injury to his hand, he can't play that well anymore, or at least he wouldn't be able to sing at the same time. So now he just sings, and they got a new guitarist to play his parts, 1st non-Finn in the group. I'm not sure who plays the drums when Kai can't participate, is it a back track. Many parts of this song, like the orchestra, and the choir were a back track, and Jari has made it (mostly?). This band started as his private dream, then he got some other players along, and this particular song he had worked on long - it's like his perfectionist dream - could you imagine :)
Jari played and sang earlier in a band called Ensiferum, you may start with Lai Lai Hei (said like Ly Ly hey - compare how you say Kai Hahto). Finnish spelling is like every letter has the same value no matter where it appears in a word - ng is the exception, it's like ng in sing, only double long: namely letters written double, are double long.
So far I haven't seen any good recordings from their concerts, the sound quality doesn't reach close to this level. I don't know if devoted fans can send you links to good concert videos.
They have had several drummers but mostly they stick to Saari Heikki from Finntroll, not easy to find a drummer which can keep up with Kai, but he for sure can ;)
If don't mind a bit crappily mixed or mastered (or both) studio version, I recommend to check out Winter Madness. In my opinion face-melting on par with the Through Fire And Flames solo.

Don't worry I'm late to the party too. Found Wintersun some time last year, and I recommend you check out "Winter Madness" by them. It has probably the most insane metal guitar solo in my opinion, oddly has classical influences. Never in my wildest dreams would I be able to play it let alone come up with it. Blew me away. And i'm pretty sure 90% of the song is blast beats too lol.

Exactly. This video brings me back to a time when I was in a Halloween party and someone put Winter Madness playing in the background. This was somewhere around 2006.. I had to stop everything and find out what this awesome band was. These kind of moments we remember forever, I think.

I knew wintersun since the very beginning. And soon after their first album which is also great btw, they announced that the second album would be called time. And then they made me wait fir 8 freaking years. But this song allone made it worth the wait.such an masterpiece of a song

The lead singer, Jari, also fronted the band Ensiferum before founding Wintersun. Dunno what they have in Finland, but it seems that Finnish drummers are all BEASTS.

Welcome to the world of Finnish metal! I would call myself very fortunate, because when I was a youngling, I saw this band live with this exact composition @ Tuska 2005. I was a fan for a few years prior, but seeing them live was easily the highlight of the whole festival, out of all 25'ish bands that I saw. What a bunch of incredible musicians.

the only problem is that they are active since 2003-2004 and released only three album! there will be TIME II album somewhere in time but no one knows when lol

I saw them live in Greensboro, NC in 2018 the night same Hurricane Florence hit -- my buddy I was going to go with had to cancel because he had to go evacuate his in-laws from Fayetteville before it flooded. They put on an epic fucking live show in that converted warehouse they played.
You should also check out the opening act from that tour, Ne Obliviscaris. They're a progressive extreme metal band from Melbourne, Australia. They have a playthrough video for their song "Curator" that would work well.
Watching this a year after you did, after I just discovered Wintersun this week, they and Nightwish are different rabbit holes. Nightwish have risen in my opinion to one of my top 5 bands of all time, and I’m a Zeppelin, Floyd, Tool guy….. But this song….. it is in a different animal. I heard it like 5 days ago and I kind of thought it was pretty cool but too raw - I’m not generally a fan of overriding harsh vocals. But the fucking song won’t get out of my brain! It’s like it is perfectly constructed. It is fucking epic!!

Basically, Kai didn't hear the first click after a pause in the middle of the song during a Nightwish gig and the whole band started off-sync with the background track. Kai figured it out and come up with a plan to fix the problem without interrupting the song. He played a custom 5/8 fill compared to original version to bring the band back into sync. (The song was Nightwish: Dark Chest of Wonders, last gig of the world tour in 2015.)
Think about that, he was able to notice the problem, compute the time difference needed and come up with a custom fill to fix the problem in time before the chorus which would make the problem really audible. And all that while playing with the band live!
Only you could do this song justice, with a great metal reaction, thank you

Hey man just want to congratulate you for your work and thank you for the honest reactions! I really had the exact same reactions you had while hearing Wintersun for the first time (in my case when I was 18) (I'm 31 now)... It change my mind about everything I've ever heard (even knowing other great bands like Rush, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Queen, Pink Floyd...). All the newer great bands I was lucky to know back then were practically forgotten during the time their first cd lasts... I felt blown away (I also play drums)...
