    Nice score on an excellent D-35 with a great history! That’s really a fantastic sounding instrument.
    The following information is from Martin Guitars: A Technical Reference by Richard Johnston & Dick Boak…
    D-35 original (Brazilian) production totals:
    1965 - 207
    1966 - 977
    1967 - 1,402
    1968 - 1,105
    1969 - 1,826
    Total 5,517
    Total 12 fret D-35S models during the same period, 274 plus an additional 2,663 D12-35 12 string versions (all 12 fret bodies, I believe).
    There have been verified examples of late 1969 D-35s with a combination of East Indian and Brazilian rosewood, as well as some early 1970 instruments with a Brazilian center wedge. Back then, Martin tended to use whatever wood they had on hand so as not to hinder production.
    So your guitar is one of 1,826 made in 1969. The serial number can definitely help you approximate when during the year it was completed and if you contact Martin directly, they might be able to pinpoint the actual production date and batch total.

    Brazilian Rosewood D35s are so underrated--they are fantastic guitars. I've had 3 of them over the past 45 years, and the one I have now is a 1968. The top is not Sitka--either Engelman or Adi, and original. They are different than D28s. I love them both, but the 68 sounds a lot like the one featured in this article. So easy to play. Fast and sweet. Hang on to them, friends--they are getting more and more attention.

    I have an early ‘69 D-35 and love the tone an the looks of the Brazilian Rosewood. As you know it has the larger bridge plate. The pre 1969 D-35 had the smaller bridge plate. I also had a 1968 D-35S 12 fret guitar and I traded it for the 1969 D-35. Why, I liked the ton of the ‘69 better than the ‘68. Also the neck of the ‘68 was like a base ball bat. No I usually like that a. I have large hands but it was still a little uncomfortably for me. These guitars have straight bracing not scalloped but use lighter braces. I think the back braces are from the 000-28 and the top braces are from a 00-18. Compared to my D-45, the D-35 has a mellower tone and is good as an accompaniment for singing. Where as the D-45 is great for blue grass as it really projects. I love all of my. 10 martins that date from the 1870s (a 0-28) to the 2001 D-45. In all I have a 1924 and 1928 0-18 and a 1935 0-18K. I gave my 1945 D-18 to my nephew. But related to this I love my 1969 D-35 and would never trade it.

    I had a '69 D-35 that I purchased new from Sho-Bud in '71. It was just after the official switch to East Indian rosewood but was very obviously Brazilian and I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't come from the same billet as the one you got. The two dark stripes on the sides that yours has were wider and almost black. The back's outer panels appeared to be slab-sawn with equally striking alternating black and brown streaks and a lighter colored quarter sawn center piece. I got in a pinch and let that one go about 20 years ago. I wish I still had pics or the S/N. It was a beautiful guitar, but could never match the sound of my brother's '71 D-28, which was the first Martin I ever played. That '71 still puts my HD-28 and HD-28VS to shame and has almost no saddle left and is overdue for reset #2. He recently gifted it to me and I'm going to have a reset done on it soon. I can't wait to hear it with some saddle height.

    I recently bought a 1967 D35, have a fresh neck reset , and fret job, the neck and fingerboard is unbelievably great and it sounds fantastic. The other thing that was done was a bridge reset to fix the intonation. I hope you enjoy your 69, like I'm enjoying my 67..

    I bought almost the exact same guitar, only mine was a '79 (D-35). It was mostly a one-owner guitar in cheery condition. Even the neck joint is original, and it doesn't need a reset. It was an estate sale and must have been babied and cherished its whole life. Needless to say, it's going to continue to be babied and cherished by me.
    D-35's like these are bad-mouthed for their rosewood bridge plates but they shouldn't be. If everything else is right about them, they produce such a warm, soulful tone. As a matter of fact, that's what I tell people when I try to describe mine: soulful. It just drips with it--and that isn't a description that you hear often with Martins. But these seem to have it in spades.
    Enjoy!

    Got a 1975 D-35 so this was really interesting to watch. I'm actually getting ready to sell it ... over the years I did the bridge replacement and I did a neck reset .. cost more than the guitar new! LOL Think my 1975 was the last year of the non-adjustable neck. Although the neck isn't the greatest the sound sure is .. like the one your playing!

    Wow! A single owner? Man! I have to admit, as a fellow 69er and a Pennsylvania native who’s been pining for a D-35 for years this has me tempted, but it would be wasted on me as I’ve literally butchered lesser guitars. That being said, I’d love to see how the restoration comes out so at the very least you’ve got a new sub from a fellow guitar addict.

    I don't know much about the world of vintage guitars but is it common for people to update certain parts of vintage guitars like this (i.e. open gear tuners) based on their preference or is it generally recommended that you keep it as close to the original as possible?

    • @barnekb
      @barnekb ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Keep them original as possible, if its an investment guitar. If you know you are keeping it forever, I guess you can do whatever to it that makes you happy. These came with Grover Rotomatics, w/ "patent pending" written on the back of them. That a key selling point to many buyers.

    That is cheap for a BRW Martin. Neck resets used to be about $500-600, not sure what they run these days. For less than $7,000 for a BRW Martin in such great shape is a steal.

    What a find! I bought a D35 in 1978 that is within the same timeframe. It has an RD serial number but no date. The Martin factory in Nazareth guessed it to be 1965 or so. I couldn't help wondering how close in time to your guitar that it was built. I've loved playing it over the years!

    • @JeremySheppard
      @JeremySheppard  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The problem is that the neck is too far forward and the action is very high even with the saddle as low as it can go. So the neck needs to be removed and reset farther back so that we can put a taller saddle in it.
