The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

This version of the group had an incredibly short lifespan, but what a mark they left on music in that time. Three stellar studio albums, a number of radio-friendly singles, and a following that spans the globe. Hard to imagine that two of the members on stage would be gone within three years. I still spin their albums to this day. Excellent video!!! Thank you ES archives!
I definitely need to brush up on The Spanky back catalogue. This performance is exceptional. What a B side.
Yeah, me too.
The three studio albums are masterpieces. Especially the last one.
Impossible to find a good cd not a *#%+ remaster
This is not the original lineup.
Wow Elaine is over 80 years old now. She and the drummer are the only surving members of the group.
Can't find much on the drummer. I read he played with the Turtles but can't find any footage.
Their vocal approach here reminds me of The Association.
Yes, they brought in Lefty and Kenny and had John drop his "Chief" shtick so he could sing, giving them 6 vocalists, in order to compete with The Association
You're right. I was thinking it reminded me of The Cyrkle, but even more so The Association.
Spanky was the powerhouse lead that sold the records.
Nah. It was Hale's arrangements more than her.
She sang so much like Mama Cass!!
What harmony! One of the great groups during the late-60s when so much beautifully happy and hopeful music lifted our spirits!
1968... Just Great Music from back in the day! Love the outfits.
TH-cam is the closest thing we have to a Time Machine!
Happy Wednesday... thank you for sharing! 💖
How different was 1968? Jose Feliciano caused a controversy with his personalized, jazzed-up version of the National Anthem at the World Series! Hard to believe. New wrinkles on the song became the norm thereafter.
One of the saddest stories having to do with 1960s American pop groups. Right at the pinnacle of their fame, bandleader and chief arranger Malcom Hale died and the group (understandably) dissolved very shortly thereafter, thus depriving us of what amazing music they could have (and likely WOULD have) produced in 1969 and later. Excellent upload...another reminder of how truly incredible music was during this period.
Great fun sun pop , in the spirit of the early 70's they could have ended up with their own variety show , a lot of talent
This group was so good and had so much potential. I don't get why they aren't more well known? They were (maybe 15 years) before my time, but I've watched dozens of their videos... "Spanky's" voice is awesome, and their Folk/Rock music is really good!
So, as someone said earlier, the issue was that the main brain of the band (Malcolm Hale - the blond guy third guitar from left) died only months after they hit it big. They never recovered from that.
Happy birthday for today Spanky..19th June 2024, all the way from Sydney Australia!! I only discovered Spanky and Our Gang last year, now I have purchased The Complete Mercury Recordings, and Spanky's Basement Tapes. My God, what an incredibly talented group!! Spanky has one of the best voices ever. What a great jazz singer she was too. It is never too late to have new fans Spanky! Thankyou. xxxxx
Spanky's voice special like Cass Elliott
I believe that she is with the Mama's and the Papas now, filling in for Cass.
Not anymore, when she joined them years ago it never quite worked out!
One great live version of a not very popular song they recorded, however they were the Best Sunshine Pop Group of all time 🌻, PERIOD!!!!!
They had some of the best music ever created !!! This Era was such a wide open opportunity of expression. Spanky had amazing vocals !!!
Spanky is a genius.
This was such a fascinating era for pop music. A wide variety of everything.
This was the B-side to the Top 40 single, "Like to Get to Know You".
When are we going to get that performance on this station? I love that song.
@@ABALLAM3 The audio file was posted on YT at the same time as this one was, so it will be posted eventually.
More like an F side
Now THAT was cornball music...
Mine is scratched :(
Lefty and Nigel both look like they are having so much fun! 🙂
Not to short change the guys and their talent, but she is so pretty and sing like no one's business.
Love this group!
I love Spanky!!
Wow. I discovered this group about three years ago, and this is like a surprise Christmas gift, seeing and hearing this song for the first time. So smooth, with a biting little guitar embellishment to boot.
Groovy man. ✌✌ And great harmony and musicianship.
Damn, they / she were so good !
Top production 💥💥
Great musicianship. Just noticed the drummer's the real deal.
Love Spanky and our Gangs.
Fantastic arrangement.
They were wonderful
I like this song, but wish Spanky's voice hadn't been drowned. ❤❤❤
LOVELY!!!!! ❤️💜💙💚💛🧡
How did I miss this great song in 1968?
Love the gown
Love this song. The arrangement, the harmonies, the lead vocals, and the dynamics of the instruments are the making of a masterpiece! So well thought out.
This was an excellent group and not fully recognized for how good they really were. More people remember the" Mamas and the Papas." However for me this group is the better. Spanky is solid. Mama Cass is another singer I really like. Both would have been Great in the Theatre and Musicals.
Mesmerizing…….
I really like the facial hair on the guys. 🙂
Sunday Will Never Be the Same..I can listen to every day.
Fun music.
That was nice, first time I on hearing. Nothing wrong with the guitar solo, typical 1960's lick.🙂 and remember it was a B side.
Yep. The B side of “Like To Get To Know You.”
Possibly my favorite song of theirs!
Great deep cut.
Damn. Those harmonies rival the Beach Boys in sophistication. Beyond most of John Phillips stuff. We should have 20 years of their music. Sad what happened to Hale.
They play live here. Very good musicians ! 🎶 👌
absolutley amazing
They were originally they originally supposed to perform My Bill on this show, but for some reason it didn't happen
One of the members died in 1968 Malcolm Hale. And in 1971 Lefty Baker. Also died.
Beautiful spanky❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊
Even the parents who had teenagers at this time had to have been impressed with Elaine's vocal abilities. Before she was with the Gang she was a jazz singer.
Spanky was never promoted correctly but her songs were better than mamas and Papas . Just did not have the 3 or 4 mega hits..... But a solid 10 hits....
😍
what a great group! sad that Malcolm Hale started "the 27 club" - such a talent gone far too soon
And then one of the other guitarists Eustace aka "Lefty" died only 4 years after at age 32 leaving behind a wife, a couple of kids and a legacy of great music
They're so electric they don't even need their instruments plugged in!
Who was prettier in 1968, Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane or Elaine MacFarlane of Spanky and Our Gang?
Grace Slick's pretentious, hypocritical Leftist politics was an instant turnoff...
Spanky here is gorgeous, full-bodied...and in need of a spanking..
Elaine was prettier.
But both were great singers. Grace had a very powerful voice.
This band’s drummer was the first quiet kid
"Spanky" in her 1960s "Darla" maxi dress
All dressed up in formals!
Fantastic group that was nowhere near as successful as they deserved to be. I once heard their music described as "too sophisticated for AM and too bubblegum for FM."
Perfect description....
The poor man's the Mamas and the Papas!
Whoever designed her dress should get a jail term.
I guess that was the style of the 60's!!!....either really good fashion, or really terrible.!!! I had to wear something as a teenager back then that I hated!!! It's not one of Spankys best outfits I have to say.The dress looks awfully uncomfortable, and tight around the arms, and what's with the bow tie!! She would have looked better in pants and a jacket and T shirt, for that particular song. I still love the video though.
I wonder who's tapping the hat on Lefty at 1:20??
Ed
And wonder who's messing with the hat? Ed?
Why do I only get music from Ed Sullivan?? I want to see acts
At least much better than Johnny Carson that won't show the music at all.
They sound a little like the Mamas and the Papas. The song is utterly forgettable, but they were all marvelous musicians. DA
Yeah, I didn't know the were that credible guitarists. Great vocals a;ways.
Spanky went on to replace Cass in the M&P's for quite a few years starting in 1981.
@@fredthejunkman yes, they played actually the instruments on this song, before anyone says it was "The Wrecking Crew" (the instruments aren't live though)
@@pmsfar-outgrooviness8025 Yeah, I know the guitars weren't even hooked up. I'm a musician and I take note of those things too.
Better than Mamas and The Papas!
A precursor to prog rock
mutton chops 🐑
There songs were really listenable, a little corny. The kitsch is great.
'Course, back in the day we were way too cool...
*Their...
That lead guitarist has one of the worst rugs in rock history next to Mark Stein Vanilla Fudge.
He died at 27. His death was unexpected. Carbon monoxide poisoning.
I DON'T LIKE THIS AT ALL
I M JUST USE TO THAT SMALL CORE WITH SPANKY. TO MUCH ELECTRIC GUITAR. LOVE JUST RIDING TO THE SHORE WITH MOM AND DAD, MY BROTHER AND TWO SISTERS LISTEN TO LAZY DAY AND SUNDAY WILL NEVER BE THE SAME. SORRY FOLKS.
never heard of this song, and now i see why, its got musical salad ie confusing, interposing, uneven flow of tones, like a bunch of open paint cans thrown against a wall, expecting a beautiful picture to emerge, its a mess....
Love this group. Sparky was absolutely the best. Sad members died so soon. Only thing that bugged me in this tune was that lead solo. Awful.
Forgettable song with a lack of melody and hook.
Horrible song
This is appalling both musically and visually. Makes A Mighty Wind look magnificent in comparison
