Nice idea but way too expensive... For 4k, Celestron should have used an alt-az/eq harmonic drive mount similar to an AM3. That would have allowed for anyone getting this scope to start easy (in alt-az mode) and then evolve to more advanced use cases using an eq mode.
I would love to see a 6" RASA OTA available as an standalone product though.
Have to agree... for this level of cost, there it should have EQ capability.
Personally.. with it limited to Alt-Az.... I'd suggest an mid level system of an an EQ mount (say an EQ6-R Pro) and a decent refractor. Yes, you will end up being into the equipment for more money (if you use an ASI Pro level camera)... but you also have the ability to move upward on your foundation.
The RPi4 that t hey use is slow compared to what you can do with a simple mini-PC in current technology.
This is basically for those that want to get into astrophotography without "biting the bullet" of learning equipment.
Is it a decent option for those that don't want to expend any work.. yep... but for those that actually want to optimize what they can do now and in the future.. nope.
The cost for a harmonic drive isn't cheap enough, and EVO can go on a wedge for the short imaging times of RASA F/2.2 when it comes to that. They're already indicating EQ use along with the upgradeable camera.
At this price I'm disappointed they went with an older sensor rather than something more recent like the excellent IMX585... And no cooling or EQ mode. At least its replaceable! Could I fit my own camera and use the OTA with another mount while still being able to control the internal focuser?
Also AI stacking? Where exactly does AI fit in and what does it do?
But if we get a standalone RASA6 OTA, I'm all for it!
I was just thinking that they wouldn't need AI for image stretching. But hey someone in the marketing department probably said that they had to put AI somewhere in the logo. I agree 585 would be an excellent match .
I'm thinking the same :D! Stacking surely involves no machine learning, but someone in marketing went "it has an algorithm! Call it A.I.!"
AI is only used to increase the price. We don't need AI on this :))
Deep dive and compare IMX178 to IMX585, they chose correctly with smaller pixel size, small well depth for F/2.2, 14-Bit, no need to worry about sensor heat, etc.
Nice to see Celestron releasing new product, but what about a standalone rasa 6 for the rest of us?
Seriously though I already have that mount and a camera and some of the fancy stuff included, I just need the tube lol
@@Fatal_Inertia Maybe Hyperstar is a good match then. Hyperstar on my C8 was a dream EAA setup, but then I caught the astrophotography virus. My wallet never recovered. If you add a AsiAir you get live stacking for pretty cheap.
Why not A 6” rasa Ota, also would be good if we could get this new ota for use with exisiting Evolution mount.
I already have two smart telescopes. ZWO Seestar and Evscope. My verdict is that Seestar is worth money, but if anything that is more expensive than seestar, it's worthless unless it has either full auto equitorial mount or just go full premium price and be larger than 8se
It’s an awesome new telescope camera and it seems like it’s very user-friendly but in my market with tax and accessories It’s $5000. I don’t think it’s gonna be 10 times better than my Seestar. I’ll wait and get a used one for $1500.
Acutally, it collects 9x more light and is almost 4x the speed of the SeeStar to boot!
I think as usual there will be a lot said about this mount before it is in the hands of users. One thing I have learned about new astro gear is to wait until the complaints start coming in and how many end up on the used market.
Does it allow you to input R.A. and Dec. coordinates for say comets for example?
At this price range, I would consider Vespera Pro over this. The product looks great but Celestron has to heavily reduce the price (at least by 50%) to stay competitive.

You mentioned in app AI stacking. Does this require the scope be connected to the app full time during the observation or is the AI stacking done in the scope and a final image output to the app? Can the final image be saved to a USB stick with no connection to app once session has started?
Like other smart telescopes the App is a terminal for input values and output results. All the alignment processing is onboard the scope. It's just like pulling in an image to your favorite photo software making changes after the fact. The mount stores the images onboard and you can download RAW for self-processing.
I have an 8" Celestron Evolution and love it. So I'm a big fan of this manufacturer.. But I also have the Vaonis Vespera and it is beyond amazing.. When comparing the prices and portability, the Vespera is a no brainer.
I agree. I have a 6se and looking at Vespera PRO now. But not ready to throw 2 grands yet. I may wait for the inevitable price drop.
Also agree. I have the Vaonis Stellina, been using it for the past few years, and just preordered the Vespera Pro (BTW: They just released a Vespera II). I do like what Celestron has done with the Origin. I have one of their 8" SCTs (the Edge), and RASA is tough to beat, but will wait to see on this.
Too bad they aren’t releasing PRO before the solar eclipse on 04/08. I live in path of totality & am going to have a smart tele set up & shooting…we’re getting approx 4’16” totality - on of longest in history.
At $4000 it's a chunk of change for sure. I have a HyperStar'd C8 on ASI Air with a 294 chip... and that's maybe $2500 if you buy lightly used. $4k is asking a lot. At $2999 I think they've got a better story.
hi. Since this is an ALT- AZM kind. And many say that for DSO photopgraphy, Eq mount is required. How does this achieve that?
There is a wedge addon option that will be available.

The only reason I’m not gonna ever get one of these smart telescopes is because they are alt az mounts and I doubt making it a eq mount instead would raise the price to much

Id like to see a smart Mount I can put my own scope and camera on. A Mount that can align itself and function like an asi air. I just add my scope and camera, plug it in and it aligns itself and can platesolve.

What about collimation? Is it going to do that automatically as well? If not then this isn’t a viable option for the “space enthusiast”.
Do you have to collimate night vision binoculars? No. Look at all the other competition, is anyone screaming about collimation? No. With the Origin if you look the camera is solidly mounted to the front, and the primary mirror is screw-controlled for focus. Thus it's a very stable aligned system.
The RASA8-RASA14 are internally collimated so that tip/tilt of the USER selected camera is the issue. In this case there isn't a user selected camera but a MFG selected camera preinstalled.
It is impressive for sure but with a catch. A trend with the tech coming out of this middle aged growing companies. It has similar vibe to the Prusa XL. Great strides but minor fallbacks.
Very exciting. But … price is just too high given the components. Needs to come down by 25%.
I really like the idea: high quality optics and a proven, sturdy mount. However: downside is obvious: field rotation and cost. If Celestron was able to add an automatic derotator, you would have a lot of bang for our buck. Stellina has such a rotator. The advantage of the alt az over an eq mount still remains: set up time. Just level the mount (e.g. using a same system as Seestar has) and go. No time consuming polar alignment routine, so minimum set up time and maximum fun.
I'm guessing the AI software takes care of the field derotation?
Ahem... Stellina doesn't use the rotator for that function, it's only for framing.
Great scope but at that price not sure it will be that much better then much cheaper choices.
I think at $2500 it's a beast. At $4000 the amount of people with that kind of disposable income, even in an affluent hobby like astronomy ... drops off a cliff.
Pros vs current offerings: Larger aperture, faster focal ratio, excellent pixel scale, upgradeable camera, componentized, taller operating height, announced use in EQ mode, well established astronomy company.
Cons vs current offerings: Heavier, top tier cost, smaller FOV than some competition(not by much but just a bit).
The price is just ridiculous considering there is other robots that do the same thing for a fraction of the price
I like the idea, but not everything. Don't like the camera - which may be upgradable and don't like the mount at all. Love to buy the OTA!

Stop using fork mounts.equatorial are so much better for what the this scopes job is.
Debateable... fork on wedge is actually more stable as the aperture goes up. So say I with a 16" fork mount.

This is considered 1 gen. I would wait until they work out the kinks, then purchase 2nd gen forward. 🤷♂️
For $4000 they could have at least have added cooling to the camera.
What worries me the most is the software considering how they work on that department. Out of the smart telescopes out there this one looks pretty interesting tho, even at that high price.

Im thinking about selling all my fidgety non fun components and buy this instead. NGL one our setup time and half an hour travel time is a real hobbykiller.
Just a "bit" out my budget. Be a good choice for those who want it all quickly. I will keep my 9.25 for now

nice but is it really worth the 5k (4k plus) for a 6" telescope that doesn't have an eyepiece and somehow makes magic photos? That's the real question.
I know why they went with such a simplistic sensor.. since they went with an ALT-AZ mount... but this is just a "rich mans" entry level system to astrophotography. Once you get a taste, you realize that you grabbed a Domino's pizza.
Like I understand it's only good for deepsky objects, not for the planets. In Europe price is 4999 euros😢

Thanks for the video, but the telescope is heavy, bulky, and expensive compared to the Seestar S50. With the cost of one telescope in 4k, you could purchase 8 Seestar S50s, and the quality is not eight times better.
Image wise this scope would well out perform the much smaller SeaStar
Image with the Seestar @50mm aperture at ~F/4, then image same target with 150mm aperture at F/2.2 there's a big difference. Off the top of my head the integration time will be cut 2x and have more detail. Yes these buggers are going to be expensive, hardware wise you're talking spending a lot more than what's in the $500 units. You have to understand, ZWO is making money based on selling 8x many $500 units but per unit profit is pretty marginal. Celestron is selling at $4000 an upgradeable product that will have good profit off the shelf plus profit in the upgrades. Yes fewer buyers, but also means tighter quality control.
There's a reason why it's only $500. It's obvious you don't know much about the technology making a statement like that. Both are for different markets. Celestron is not making this for the mass market at that price point.
For the money I would want to see an EQ mount not just an RA. Also the video I saw suggested it's limited to 10 second subs like other smart scopes. Big no from me
They've got all the camera and software brains they need to do an easy equatorial alignment with no user input -- it can find Polaris it can do it. The $4000 price and the smaller 6" RASA size also hypothetically allows for a harmonic drive option (I assume they wanted to get rid of overstocked Evolution mounts). EQ would really up the possibilities, and I'm a little miffed they didn't go for a 533 1" sensor... it's got a cell phone sized one :(

I assume that's because it's alt-az. At 6 inches of aperture, 10 seconds is safe to avoid field rotation. In my opinion, this new scope is just too expensive. The Seestar s50 is only $499 shipped, and while i recognize the difference in quality, i still wonder who Celestron thinks their market is.
Celestron is firmly a "Toyota" brand but this move says Televue or Astro Physics to me...@@gomcse
F/2.2 allows 10 seconds to gather what it takes an F/5 60 seconds. At 2.4um pixel and 150mm aperture it also means better resolved details than 80mm and 50mm telescopes.
i like Celestron innovating, but "smart" scopes like this, I might as well go on the web and look at hubble pics on my 4k monitor... whats the point? Ymmv, but my eyes arent "seeing" anything, its looking at a picture. Many pretty pics on the web, and I can save $4000.
Relative to your purpose. Live view at the moment... kind of like last year when you could look at the supernova with your own equipment, or the comets, Moon, eclipse... this should be eclipse capable btw.

Overpriced, should have had a better camera sensor.. and EQ … does not mention even if they have mosaic mode.. additionally these systems need to set them up so they can be modified or upgraded
ROFL... it's component built... Tripod, Mount, OTA System, upgradeable camera, already indicated EQ will be available.
It’s not worth 4K, in my opinion. I pay, I say.
RASA 6 should crush the Seestar and Dwarf, too bad they went with such a small chip size. A 533 or 183 would have been so much better
FOV was intentionally limited with the 178 to deal with rotation in Alt-Az... since they have already opened the window to both upgrading the camera and equatorial mounting at that point a larger sensor would make sense.

Celestron makes good telescopes, but that horrible one-armed alt-az mount. Just, no. If I was given one for free, I'd still feel ripped off.
If Celestron will make it hackable, they will sell tons of them

All I have to say is excellent idea but bad execution 😞 First of all, with the advancement in strain wave technology, why not a pre-balanced strain wave based EQ mount? Az would be best for visual and if used for astrophotography would require either a wedge or camera rotator. The second fail is an uncooled IMX178 sensor which has bad ampglow made even worse when it isn't cooled! If they used one of the newer IMX585 or even IMX678, no cooling is needed as these camera have no amp glow and very low dark current especially with fast exposures at F2 to F3. And finally the worst one, a closed ecosystem as the camera mount is proprietary and just like a lot of other Celestron "smart" gear, only works with Celestron. I mean come on the super expensive dew heater controller still does NOT have an ASCOM driver or the Starsense that only works with Celestron mounts🤬. One good innovation is the filter drawer but does it take standard filters??? Sorry if this seems like a rant but this thing is really disappointing and it hasn't even come out yet!
So when are you coming out with your own telescope for us to buy?
I literally dont see the point of these fully automated everything scopes. If you are going to do that, why dont you save yourself a ton of money and look at images on google instead.
EAA is real time, real conditions. I think that's more the idea than deep dive AP pretty pictures, which is only one segment and possible use and honestly more expensive and time consuming than $4000.
I've got visual equipment and AP equipment, each has it's benefits and detractions. When you get to DSO viewing through an eyepiece there isn't 'activity' to see so either you stick your eye for minutes staring to try to see more detail, or stick a camera to the telescope to reveal more detail over time.
Sorry but too expensive! Over $5400 cad. Maybe $3500 would be fair and reasonable. However I believe this is the future of telescopes.
What ?? 🤬 There is absolutely nothing new!!! I feel like I can't and can't change anything about it at all 😖 other than sitting?? Four thousand dollars??? I don't want it, even if it costs $200. I'm sure of that. I have never and will never give up the HD Celestron 11, the pinnacle of creativity.

Its expensive but you pretty much get a portable observatory with camera and software to process photos

I would not spend 1K on this scope. Its a dead end for a bunch of workflow. Take the time and learn, buy good gear, you will be glad you did.
Or buy this if you want the ability to take images of the skies.
For some the acquisition of the data is the fun part.
I love capturing the data. Seeing the subs coming in and coming in good. Amazing.
I dislike the post capture part. Hence most my captures are hastily stacked and barely processed beyond stretching and basic tweaks.
Devices like these allow more people access to the hobby.
More people looking up could (wishful I know) lead to better city lighting plans in the future. Meaning more people can look up and so the loop continues.
I was skeptical of roboscopes/smartscopes. Thinking, like many others, overpriced toys. Comparing their costs to equivalent kit.
Completely missing the point. It makes it more accessible.
Like CMOS and CCD sensors did with film. You can still use film and process it at home, digital sensors just made it easier.
Same for auto focus devices. Nothing stopping you manually focusing. Electronic filter wheels, tracking/goto mounts.
Let's face it. The majority of us have our rigs pretty much fully automated. The post process is all that we are really hands on with.
Just remember. More people buying means more money for improvements.
Also just bought a Seestar S50 to supplement the main rig. It's an impressive little scope.
Stop gatekeeping the hobby. Not everyone wants to take that time. You remind me of the PC enthusiast people who whine just because someone buys a prebuilt desktop computer instead of building their own. Let people enjoy their hobby however they want.
