Cod fishing with cheese and worms and salami and chicken with Tim and Brett and Holly and Lauretta

  • This was a great twilight cod fishing session with both Murray cod and trout cod being caught. The fish were plentiful, but there were no big fish caught. That's OK by me. I just love fishing and catching small fish while I wait for a bigger fish to come along suits me just fine.

There was a time you would have only dreamed of catching a cod in that spot, and as for a trout cod - that would have just been silly business. Now you can spend a couple of hours with family and mates and the dreams have come true. Our river health in the NE has improved remarkably in the last 10-15 years and with the stocking program it’s a great result any way you look at it.

With cod, that is a good way to lose tackle to snags. I leave my bail open for carp, for cod, it is tight drags and locked bail.
They don't venture far from the snags during the day, so as soon as they feel the pressure, they run straight into the tightest spots they can find.

My favourite rod holder is one of the standard plastic type ones you might see on a Kayak, where the handle of the rod slips down into it. I simply screwed that onto a piece of plywood that is about the width of the base, and then about 30cm long. From there you just have to put a rock that is laying around at the location on the plywood back and front, and there is no way a fish will drag the rod into the water.
I use 2 rods when fishing, one with bait, which sits in the rod holder. And the other rod I use lures with, typically messing around with my soft plastic lures, I cover both areas doing this, of course most fish I find are caught on bait, since bait puts off a smell, and fish appear to use their sense of smell a lot more than relying on eyesight, so bait beats lures I find.
The only fish where lures probably work better, are fish that have big eyes and live in clearer waters and rely on their eyesight more, such as things like Trout and Redfin, I find that Redfin are a very fast fish with good eyesight, so they are easy to catch on lures.
However for things like Yellowbelly, Silver perch, Cod, I find that bait is the big winner. One thing that you probably won't ever catch on a lure is an eeltailed catfish, this needs bait as well. The beauty of bait is that it covers everything, if there is a fish of any species, it's probably going to go for the bait.
However as someone who just loves using lures, I always work that into my program as well, so I am always lure fishing while bait fishing at the same time.
