- In this video we discuss the new event, voted on by Sturgis City Council, that will bring a big change to the 2024 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. I give my opinion on how this new event relates to current motorcycle culture and the challenges it may face.
Second weekend is a ghost town. I think if sponsors pick it up, go for it! Attendance is only on the decline.
Sturgis wants more attendees? LOWER THE PRICES! Everything has gotten way too expensive especially for younger people.
Couldn't agree more!
BEEN GOING SINCE THE MID 90'S AND NOT GOING TO CHANGE MY ROUTINE
That's a stretch! Hope to see you there!
I go sturgis every year, suggest to council to do races week before instead of after rally.
I haven't thought of that myself. That definitely would be a better idea than the last rally date.
I did the rally '98,'99'2000, and 2001, then again in 2023, the first four were great the last I rate at 5 out of ten, the kids think the rides are for racing instead of enjoying the hills and riding safe. I will be hitting it again in '24, staying in Custer, but heading out and arriving in the middle of the event and staying a few days past it, riding the long way there from Pahrump Nevada, Hitting the parks in Utah and through Colorado mountains, coming back through Montana and Idaho, pays being old and retired. And yes I ride, not trailer. But a race in town I will avoid,
I have to agree. Even the last five years I have been attending I have seen many changes in riding behavior. Can't even imagine the difference 20 years makes. At least you have a nice ride in. Coming from the east is less scenic. Maybe we will see you there this year. Safe travels!
@@funonwheels1903 Was a lot different, but the rides are why one go's, half day at Harley and half day in Sturgis just to see what's new, other than that hit the rides early before the crowds are out ( easy to do since many are hungover ) Yes sir, the planning always means hitting two lanes as much as possible, staying away from highways just enjoying the scenic routes there and back. Will be staying in Custer, central location to all the area. Easy to spot old guy with a white bread and a Marine Corps cover
For the last 11 rallies I went a week early then left on Monday after the rally. I also work 7 on 7 off 12-hour shiftwork. So, I only need to take 1 set of shifts / 84 hours off for 3 weeks of vacation. I retire next May and plan on staying after the rally for a week also. It will be the first time I trailer the bike.
Sounds like you have it down to a science! We will have to meet up this year.
Black hills motorr classic was fun. Rally in city park was fun. When they changed the name it went to hell
I'm riding from NC. Like you said...3 days there, 3 days back. I like to be there by the end of the first weekend and stay all week and pull up camp friday morning and hit the road to be back at work by monday. Love to see the race but it wont happen
Sounds like a very familiar situation. What route do you usually run coming from NC?
@@funonwheels1903 I run 77/35 north and pick up I70 in Dayton, Ohio then run up 74 and pick up I80 in Davenport (bypassing Chicago.), Then run that to Omaha. From there either run up to Sioux Falls and hop on 90 or run across the Nebraska sand hills. Went across Nebraska route 2 first time, that was a good ride and nice break from the interstate. May ride across Nebraska on rt20 this time just depends on time and weather.
What route do you take?
We have done it quite a few different ways. I80 to Chicago, gone around Chicago a few different ways, to I90. Have also done I80 all the way to Nebraska. One year we took an absolute back road threw Iowa don't even remember that route just remember all the corn.
I am considering going to Sturgis this year with my nephew. I do not plan on attending the race. I hope they can get everything organised for it. I think they should have talked to the Jackpine Gypsies about the race. They could possibly help organise it. I think it would also raise interest in the event if they were associated with the race.
What days do you plan to attend? And is this your first time?
I have been to Sturgis twice. My nephew has not been there. I would be there for the Badgers meet up on the opening day of the rally. It is at the Buffalo Chip. I would be at the rally 3 or 4 days.
Good idea. I think you have to look at the FOX Sports broadcast rights included in the August 11 AFT TT. Plus it follows the Aug 6th Black Hills Half-Mile in Rapid City, SD. This maybe the start of a two event Sturgis - one event for the older bagger types and a second event for the younger performance crowd. And, since non-Harley bikes dominate flat track, this will bring in a much needed, non-Harley culture, crowd. I only see positives here.
I absolutely agree. Just hope they could overcome the challenges.
I do not think the race was well thought out. I get they’re trying to keep people there longer, but that isn’t the answer. I will not be staying for the race.
Thanks for sharing your opinion. Your certainty not the only one with that mindset.
Sturgis is just a money grab now
I'd rather spend a week going through Wheels Through time and meet Matt
We plan on heading down there this May!
AFT has killed flat track racing. I have been a fan since 1971, but since AFT took over, they have not shown any actual racing on their YT channel, only warm ups & time trials..
Thanks, but no thanks !!
Seems to be the general consciences.
