At 17, I'm now 62, I found this album in the $2.00 stack. Changed my life. A white boy in northern California I couldn't get enough jazz. My sister, a flight attendant, met Gil on a flight. He signed a napkin I still have. He wrote " From the brothers on 17th Street signed Gil Scott Heron.
I love this so much. And I am so glad that he touched your life in such a beautiful way. It is the eve of my father's memorial service and I am listening to this - thinking about my dad and me listening to this as we drove across Texas. Everything that ever needed to be said between us was said and understood. I miss Harry N. White and I miss Gil Scott Heron.
At mamadoli : only a couple years apart in age. Back then, all were privalagef to call in to the Radio Stations, ask what did we just hear. Especially the College Station's. Gil-Scot Heron ... ☮️☮️
I'm a white working class man from the North of England and have adored and related to Gil's poetry since the early 1970's. I actually was sat a the table next to his organ at Ronnie Scott's in Oct 1985 when he shoved the mike in front of me to sing along! Like all idiots, I froze! But what a great man! RIP True Legend!
I was at the signing he did at HMV on that visit. My brother and I still have the records he signed. He was a lovely guy who took time to talk to two white teenagers about modern (1985) rap music.
Addiction is real. Free will usually isn't. Pain. It all comes from pain. Rest easy brothers and sisters who got caught and couldn't get out. This version of this tune is absolute magic. A Loft classic and masterpiece.
Addition is very real. I lost my brother to drugs, my father to alcoholism, almost lost myself too, but was able to put the pieces back together before it was too late. This song talks right to the soul of people trying to escape the everyday fight of life. Either you swim or go under. I chose to swim.
Although the words hit home, the saxophone and bass players are what make "Home is where the hatred is" what it is; An all-time classic in my mind and will always stand the test of time- A MASTERPIECE OF JAZZ!!!
Devastating. Lyrically, instrumentally, musically . . . a guided tour of hell with one of music's greatest artists and finest poets as your guide. The real tragedy, of course, is that Gil himself ended up descending into the very hell he sings about in this song. More's the tragedy -- how we need his voice today!
"It's Your World" remains a heavy album. Whether you're listening to it for the first time or rediscovering it for the 10 thousandth.... Ain't nobody like Gil Scott-Heron ~ period
"And it might not be such a bad idea if I never....I never went home again!" That is an ominous, prophetic line! Great work Brother Brian Jackson and Rest in Power Brother Gil! Respect!
Gil Scott heron left us some political treasures and This is a good cd. Some good live jamming and a few funky studio tracks. Catch that Fender break! This live version was a Loft classic of the disco movement and has been sampled in house music as well as has been covered, notably by Esther Phillips and a modern but potent take by original JB revue vocalist Vicki Anderson.
"you keep saying kick it, quit it, kick it, quit it, god but did you ever try"... line gives me the chills and i've never suffered from an addiction to any sort of narcotic. haunting

Listening to Brother Gil since 1974.......................Hey just listening to Gil and the Midnight Band I learned of life struggles though out the world especially in USOOIA listen and you will learn.
I always assumed it was brian jackson. but damn, this dude named himself bilal suni ali??? he must have realy really, like really wanted white people to hate him. its funny, this is one of those jams that ive always said the sax player clearly sold his soul to the devil to be able to play like that, and you just tell me this dudes name is bilal. lmao

I had an amazing privilege to see GSH at a festival when I was just a young teen. No idea who he was but I was totally blown away. This particular live version was played last Sat on Gilles Peterson show on BBC and WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW !!!! ive listened to it abut 20 times since
Pure Don't Mess about version of this cult tune !!! Does it get better than this ? I don't think sot he break in the middle at 6:14 is to die for cool as you like with all that fire !!!! Gil and Brian Cooking !!!
Wow! I don’t know how this song only has 113k views in 11 years! I feel like I’ve listened to it a thousand times myself!😃This is a classic among the classics.🔥Rest in peace Brother Gil, and keep going strong Brother Brian Jackson. Respect!
Are we sure this is Brain on Rhodes. I saw a live version of this song on You Tube and it was Gil, not Brian on Rhodes. Scratch that...I heard Gil say "Thank you Brother Brian" after the solo.
Sounds like a Rhodes Mark I Suitcase electric piano, surely a Mark I but maybe it's a Stage piano. In the LP credits it tells that Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson play both electric piano, don't know if it's Gil or Brian at the solo
Werly ? You mean Wurlitzer ? No, it's a Rhodes Mark I for sure. The Rhodes electric piano is tighter, harder, more 'clinky' (maybe I'm inventing a word) than the soft Wurlitzer (Wurlitzer was the first electric piano : played by Ray Charles on ''What I Say'' or by Joni Mitchell on ''Woodstock'' song, for example)

There is nothing better than seeing a DJ drop this joint and watching a circle of dancers form and getting it in on the bridge of this song. Whew.
I've definitely danced to this back in the day

Listened to this on the Greyhound all the way from L.A to NY at 21 years old. Ready for the world!!!
Reminds me of my trip from San Francisco back home to NYC. Age 19. . Go Greyhound! April 1969. I once owned this double album way back when.
I listen GIL from MEXICO since my 14 years old the, father of hip hop

Is there anyone out there old enough to know how he got strung-out or who got him that way. It didnt seem to affect Brian.

I recognize that name. Former host of Friday Night Drum on Radio Free Georgia. Republic of New Afrika. Was he a sax man too? 😯
Brian Jackson's piano solo is incredible...I mean absolutely incredible

Well stated and I agree. I loved his honest words and thought provoking songs on top of the musicianship. Forever living he is.

A shame. Do you know why they did that? Sometimes songs or albums become unavailable, but then they come back later. Hopefully these will too.

It's a Rhodes with the pickups very close to the tine, so much as to infuriate Harold Rhodes but the sound is great
@6:03 and on a bit.. Masters at Work (Kenlou) sampled this for their Moonshine track ;)
