When i first listened to this album, i was wondering what could come next after the first song, "Peace go with you brother", which is a masterpiece. And the second song of the album is this one, "Rivers of my fathers". My god, this album is just perfect.
"Anger will never disappear so long as thoughts of resentment are cherished in the mind. Anger will disappear just as soon as thoughts of resentment are forgotten" The rivers of our fathers run deep. It's current is strong and it's depth is cold. The harder I try to swim to shore the deeper I sink. I struggle in vain and there is no one to reach out to. I surrender to it's force.....carry me home to Philadelphia.
@Gustavsnaf Firstly, this comment could've been both racial and personal. You don't know. Secondly, this song wouldn't exist without problems of black people. You are privileged and it shows. Go listen to your people's music and don't add additional hate to already hateful society
I followed this man to every college he performed at on the East coast when I was in college. Blessed to see his last N.Y. performance at S.O.B's. He and Brian Jackson played the hell out of "Gotta Go To Work."
pat holmes i have loved him from the first time i heard his voice as a young girl in the Civil Rights Movement. Wish i could have been a close friend. I know for sure i could have eased a lot of his pains.
As confusion rises in the current day and time, this song of inspiration will help soothe any challenges with the idea that brighter days are ahead. This song is so relevant, music that feeds the soul.
When GSH was 'on the scene' I was but a toddler. So I missed out on seeing him live, although my older brother would play his music occasionally. However, my brother re-introduced him to me when I was at an age to appreciate his writing. With Brian Jackson on the keys, this was a household favorite. I still don't know how my brother had his music on reel to reel but it made the music sound exquisite.
This album is truly wonderful. By the time Gil left Flying Dutchman his music had changed. It has evolved through those first three records as Brian Jackson became more involved. Pieces of a Man was great his first great album but this album presented another leap forward and perhaps the best album of his career.
His music reflects on what's going on today. Makes me think about George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and everyone who has been brutalized and murdered by law enforcement. Power to the people👊
Gill Scott was a genius… simply put it . His music touches the soul so profound , it makes you think unimaginably. It’s a beautiful feeling to connect with your inter soul. His music, his poetic words and music is a storybook experience of the Black experience around the globe . I had the pleasure of seeing Gil Scott many times, mainly at Blues Alley in Washington, D.C. . He was always inspiring, innovative, and insightful. He was the best.
J ai découvert GSH en 83 . Vu à plusieurs reprises en concert en particulier au New Morning . 40 ans après j écoute et j en pleure Le poète majeur du 20 eme siecle . Peace go with you Brother
OMG, this is beautiful...and so much more....believe it or not I've been familiar with his music for the larger part of my life, but this is the first time I'm hearing this..EVER! It's crazy when you sort of re-discover" an artist that you've always been familiar with...you dig???
He was mesmeric. I was lucky to see him 4 or 5 times. His stage presence was amazing. And he was a team player, his bands consisted of great performers too.
June Anderson Saw him play live at a gig in Leicester England in the late 80s. Wish you could have been there too. It was an honour to be in the same room as the godfather of rap.
Been listening to this track for years! Its so soulful. Jay versace just sampled it on Mind Right for Pink Siifu, after listning I just had to come back.
This song was written I believe over 40yrs ago , although it seems to have a perpetual application along with pieces of a man and winter in america , Hey I think I've found a lovely day !!!,,,...
I have always loved this man He is and will be right on in everything he related in his songs. Not always able to be a strong Blackman in this world but Gil and his music puts everything in order. Hard not to let anger take over but being a 73 year old Blackman it sure ain't easy. Gil helps. J.Bracey
Music from another space . Peace go with you brother . How it s possible not to cry !! Free free Palestine 🇵🇸. I m sure if GSH were here today he will speak for the freedom of Palestine . RIP
Lord forgive me for my sins, on this Earth,I didn't mean to be a bother All I ask Is when I die you allow me to be carried home by the rivers of my father's.
I'm sorry but no one came close, RIP brother Gil, we miss you.
Let me lay down by a stream and let me be miles from everything...

oh yes brother i agree!!
I felt the same way when I first heard it, the first of many thousands of listens.

I hear you, and we are not alone my friend. Spirit and Gil say “don’t give up, you’ve been down long enough.”
Indubitably!
Can we listen to songs without having needless racist comments, omg u people were freed in 1865, stop making everything a racial issue. Jesus christ
True

My father used to play this record a lot when I was a kid...makes me tear everytime I hear it :-)

Your dad had soul.
It’s good that you’re his daughter. X
Nothing short of Love. Thank you Gil, Brian and everyone that appreciates this.
I was at a concert, sitting in front seat. He reached out for my hand. I didn't want to let go. I smiled for two weeks!

I first saw him at Lincoln University...always love GSH
Love is everywhere. Eventually the baseness of society will die. Love will always remain.
This music is timeless! Was always one of my favorite musicians.
How I love this man❤️❤️❤️What a voice. What a beautiful heart.RIP
Bronxlady1 such a beautiful heart.

my father died before 1. I don't even know him but this makes me feel his spirit. I swear
It's all real good Ray...RESPECT
....There needs to be a love button Amazing Amazing Amazing
i love how he says africa at the very end with the song fading out beautifully
Remember your roots.
In a song from bridges when he says "You alone have been to Africa" it gives me chills every time
Brian Jackson's piano work on this track is godly. The part from 5:13 onward reminds me of a blooming flower, a lonely and sad beauty
I listen to this and I just zone out nothing else matters in life
Yes, me too. I just float down this river of sound and I'm gently, lovingly, placed back into life. And it feels better ❤
Gill Scott Heron and Brian Jackson and their music remind me of my most precious memories of my beautiful brother. RIP Gill!

Such a chill, reflective record.

This has to be the ONE song that I must play when listening to Gil....I agree it's "stunning" ... performed so vividly.

Feel the same way. I've loved him since the 70s but am coming across a lot of great songs I'd never heard before, including this.
Beautiful!!
I wish I could have saw Gill in concert!
He was mesmeric. I was lucky to see him 4 or 5 times. His stage presence was amazing. And he was a team player, his bands consisted of great performers too.
June Anderson, I was fortunate to see him twice at the Bottom Line. Nights to remember forever.
