At the end of the Japanese version we hear both monsters roar in the American we hear only King Kong. In case of Japanese version there's probably no double meaning connected with the choice but I'm sure American version tried to imply that Kong won even though we don't see the ending of the fight (or even if there was some action underwater) and it goes against Tanaka's opinion. In reality Honda was just satirizing the sensationalism and detachement from tragedy. Some guy's dumb mistake ended in tragedy even if Kong was supposed to be less aggressive we see him as danger. He destroys buildings and captures a woman. Reminds me of Godzilla in the next movie. He's just clumsy and doesn't belong.

I wonder when this was originally requested and if Chuck decided to release it at this time, shortly after the release of the polarizing 2019 King of the Monsters and with the promise of Godzilla and Kong fighting again on the big screen, this time with Godzilla taking top billing.

Cooper was not only thinking of a color remake for King Kong, but thought of doing it in the new Cinerama process. That would have been something as well as challenging for O'Brien (no stop-motion feature had been done in any widescreen presentations), but I reckon that O'Brien would have welcomed that challenge!

Light hearted in no way means disrespectful bad cinema. Much of the early showa films especially maintained a message to them mothra vs Godzilla and invasion of Astro monster are the examples. From critics on consumerism/capitalist society to allegories for gunship diplomacy, most Godzilla films maintained that political or social messaging to them but chose to do so with different tones. The ability to craft a film that can be enjoyed both on the surface for its entertainment as well as it’s deeper thematic qualities is something that many critics aren’t willing to praise. Personally I never understood why many fans say the only film to have any meaning was the original. I say they just aren’t looking.

I once read an essay about how art made for patrons is fundamentally different from mass audience fare, and critics exist only because of the former, which is why their opinions on the latter seem so clueless and out of step. This would explain why critics tend to give a pass on the MCU, maybe they shouldn't even be reviewing those movies in the first place.

HA HA PLZ!!!! IT WAS A DRAW just like in "Invasion of the Astro Monster" when Rodan AND Godzilla fall in the ocean and King Ghidorah flies away ...did G and Rodan lose??? of course not!!!! plus the Japanese version has both roars signifying a draw..period. Even tho the English "version" deletes Godzilla's roar. How did Kong get so tall too!!??? oh well fun movie but I will ONLY watch the Japanese version.

Not sure about KKvG but in Mothra, there are all manner of various tints of blackface. Thing is, African actors weren't too thick on the ground in Japan, on account of them not kidnapping millions of poor sods from Africa centuries earlier. Honda literally uses something we perceive now as racist, purely to demonstrate Infant Island is a paradise of racial harmony (the couple at the centre of the big dance ritual are even mixed race). Just by the by......I'm not sure African actors would have been quite right either as I believe what (again, at least in Mothra, but probably here too) is being depicted is the skin tonal range of the various Polynesian peoples......perhaps Australians would have been a good fit for the darker ones.
I do recall the "comedy negro" character in KKvG...... "look mummy, aren't dark skinned people funny", a nauseating trope wherever it rears its hooded head.
It's surprising Ifukube went along with crappy Ainu depictions......I'm fairly sure it wasn't a black chap composing for Song Of The South.

Interesting editorial like always! I never know that there was some connection between creator of King Kong and my country, Poland - it's nice to know! Also I don't like changing history, editing movies for the sake of political correctness - it stinks of "1984". As for Godzilla being a comedic character, I look at this like I look at Batman being a comedic character - I don't like it, because those who portray Batman as goofball are missing the point of a character, but there is a way to tell funny Batman story without making him look silly. For example I always hated campy Adam's West Batman and Joel's Schumacher Bat-movies, because in those works Batman is shown as a clown, but recently I watched little, animated film called "Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" and it convince me that you can have funny Batman movie WITHOUT making Batman look stupid - it mentioned fim Batman is a serious character and Turtles are goofballs! I think the same can be done with Godzilla - don't make him dance after he wins a fight, don't make him use his atomic breath to fly...Godzilla don't have to be a bad guy but he should ALWAYS be formidable and threatening, not a silly goofball !
