Incredible to see a father and daughter working together so well! The production quality for your video seems very professional. Its very much like watching a TV show on TLC. Your parents must be very proud to have a daughter with such patience, drive and ambition! Well done!
Wish I had a dollar for every time I thought to myself "this will be the last batch of filler or the last coat of primer"! The closer you get to being finished the more things you find to fix it seems but the hard work will pay off when you make it shiny! Body work for me was a great lesson in learning patience! Great job you guys!

Awesome to see you working with your dad on your project and making memories. Love how your videos are real time and so transparent even with the mishaps, thanks for making them.
My absolute favorite TH-cam channel! I look forward to a new update each week. Thanks for sticking with it. I'm anxious to see it completed, and I'll be sad if you don't find a way to keep this going.

I'm thinking it's self levelling, which is why it actually works. I'm so excited for you two!!
I bet dads very proud of his little girl getting stuck in to the hard work , well done dad and Ellie it’s a lot work but it’ll be well worth it you wait and see 👍
Good job Ellie. Glad you guys figured out to use the 80 grit to rough block your filler. 180 and 220 just makes for more work. My arms hurt watching you guys use the fine stuff.
First off this is the first time I’ve seen your videos, now I have been doing body work and painting for 30 years been doing it professionally for 25 years and you don’t sand like a first timer you sand better than some preppers that I have worked with. Dad be proud of your daughter she is awesome. If I was close to you I would love to help paint your car and give you some pointers on painting. Keep up the good job 👍
Hey Dad that's a neat thing that you're teaching that young lady and it's a lost art that nobody seems to know how to do anymore these days and think of the time you're spending together that's wonderful
Hello Carl, Ellie, and Dad. I at 53 have just started restoring my first of 3 1950s cars. Starting with a 1958 Ford Fairlane 500. I am watching with great interest and appreciate your journey. I was thinking about a body guy but now am Going to do it myself. Thank you John Lewis Warrenton Mo "My car doesn't have a name yet"
Great watching you and your dad working together. When you're sanding hoods, roofs, and decklids, avoid pressing too hard, the metal deflects, you sand the filler away, then the metal springs back up around it creating a low spot
Ugh, my arms are aching for you guys! But I love that you're so methodically approaching each and every step of your restoration. It will make the final product all the more incredible! 😍
You guys are rockin these videos.... Keep up the great work Ellie. Your hands on work is enjoyable to watch and restorers like you are what keeps the hobby going strong.
Glad to see that you still have interest in doing all the work and haven't givin' up. And yes Body work is hard work , time consuming and dirty. You will dirty up lots of clothes every time you do that. The guide coat is very helpful when sanding , but it doesn't have to be sprayed on heavy , just light enough to cover the area, Just like you did after the first filler application on the trunk lid. Otherwise you're doing great . Also don't stress about the deadline . This stage in the paint work is the most critical and don't rush it. If there are imperfections in the primer and filler they will show up in the paint really bad and you gonna hate it. Then you'll have to start all over and redo everything and that is expensive. If you get Carl all in primer that will be good enough to go the Falcon nationals and listed as a WORK IN PROGRESS. Thanks for the card and sticker. Arrived today.
First let me say congratulations on tackling this project. You are a special young lady. Secondly, I did auto body restoration for 20 years, a quick tip for the guide coat…try not to get “lines” when applying it…just dust it on as evenly as possible. The “lines” area has more paint then the surrounding area making you need to sand off more than is actually needed to level the primer. Keep up the great work.
here is something i learned from my days past with body work, when you at your final sand ie 220 350 grit or even 500 wet, use a sponge behind the sand paper so your fingers and or high spots in your palm are not pushing down more then the rest. you will get a more even sand at the wet sanding stage before last wash and paint.
@@ElliesGarage Your welcome, glad i could help. i am a fan of your youtube for about 6 months now. and wish you lost of luck in on your car restoration. :D

Ellie, no matter what life brings you, don't ever get rid of this car. Even if you get married, have kids, have a career, etc, leave it parked in a garage and save it. One day you'll be glad you did. It will always bring back all these memories. If you sell it because you don't think it fits your life now, you'll be sorry you did later. When I was doing my Falcon back in the seventies I made lots of mistakes due to being in a hurry to get it done but again paint and filler products have come a long way since 1973-1974, take your time and don't get discouraged when things don't go as planned you're doing a great job, certainly better than I did then😁
Up to the same step with my corolla! Always good to refresh the brain with a good video on the steps to come. Ps.. super jealous of your guys garage! Mine sux! 🤣
So many debates over this. Just got off the phone with Tamco they said no filler on bare metal creates heat then condensation on metal and to put over there DTM high build 5310. I do not need epoxy if car is inside all the time it will save you a lot of money just block and top coat your done and still have epoxy properties in the DTM.
Yes, we saw lots of opinions going different directions, but we ended up going with Eastwood's instructions which sound a lot like that as well--start with epoxy, filler, epoxy, then on to urethane.
@@ElliesGarage Just don`t put w&g remover on that epoxy. Trust me...2 weeks later i did that and pulled that epoxy off to metal. What HB did you use over that?
Body work is 99% prep. and 1% paint. But wait there's more! once you paint you get to sand sand sand some more. The best part is when all is done you have the feeling of pride that you did this all with you own hands :o)
@@ElliesGarage Yes , paint sanding. That is done usually wet with 1500 grit paper to smooth out the paint or clear coat to remove orange peel created by the spraying of the final coat. Then buff it out with a polisher with wool pad and then foam pad and polishing compound. But that is for a later video . Don't worry about it now.
Love the channel. Working on a project truck with my own daughter. Replacing the AC system next for our c1500. Great video and especially appreciate your brief explanations throughout. 👍
I feel your pain! I am in the exact same place on my restoration.. I don't known if you have ever seen the Karate Kid movie but this process reminds me of the part where he learns his karate moves by putting wax on, and then taking wax off, a lot full of cars. The hood and trunk lid look marvelous, keep up the great work!
I feel the sanding blues for ya!! I prefer the powder guide coat cheaper and covers a lot better... I did 6 coats of high build primer on my buggy block sanding in between coats to get it perfect! Keep it up!!
Body work is definitely work. Might be a little late, but I always find if I wear some latex gloves it helps with finding those low and high spots. Seems counter intuitive but it works for me, if you ever need to do more bodywork might be worth a try to see if it helps.
It is hard work most people have no idea. Good job. I learned first I would have started out with 180 instead of 220 For first block. And use a paper towel or a glove you can feel low or high spots alot better than a bear hand. Good luck 👍
You go girl!! I think they call it body work is 'cause it's a full body workout! Doing a great job!! Something I did/am doing on my project is using the shop vac for the dust more than blowing it off. Tip I got from Kevin Tetz. You can use black primer for a guide coat too! I make myself notes on the panels with colored chalk from the dollar tree store. Is there a lot of texture in the rolled on primer? I am old school and spray everything. KEEP GOING!! Have a primer blocking party, pizzas and sodas will draw the little boys like flies. If you can, try the polyester primer. Like spray on filler. Sands super easy and so smooooth and "laser" straight and flat!
I am no expert just sharing what I did. I used filler for my low spots and focused just there. Guide coat once that one spot was done. Then moved to next low spot on that panel. Once all low spots on panel were filled and level to surrounding metal inthen did a glaze coat over entire panel. Not sure if I saved time doing it this way but I know I had less repeats. So for what it's worth may want to try that next time
To save a little money, clean your 36 grit / 80 grit with a folded metal coat hanger. You will surprised at how much further it stands without leaving scratches. Guide coat can be very cheap as you buy Flat Black from Home Depot for $1.68 a can or less. Never use gloss paint, it clogs the paper when dry. It is satisfying to do body and paint work, but one thing is for sure the rest of your life!!! You will never look at another car or truck with a nice paint job the same way. Also, you will choose parking spots further from the normal crowd the dings the car doors, an never think twice about putting a blue ding in your door or fender. Best of luck.
Watching your video made my knees hurt, a full restoration type paint job wears your knees out at about 3x the normal rate, every old body guy I know has bad knees or knee replacments. Great job though, you guys are doing great!
That's lookin awesome but I would suggest a few coats of a high solids primer for the rest of the body, you can put on 3 fat coats and long board it starting with 220, from what I can tell on the hood and trunk, this would have saved you a ton of filling and sanding, overcoat even had a sprayable filler and honestly you can roll it on seeing how you have to sand it anyway,, great job so far,, happy blocking
@@ElliesGarage I'm 58 and have been working on cars sence high school, I only wish we would've had a product like that back in the early 80s, we were doing good to find high build primer back then,, lol
Few of those litleones can somrtimes leave under the primer and it will fil those.but its need years on get that sense what yuo can leave under primer.i just find yuor channel and i think i see how this project go on.
Good video and great effort. For its age Carl's boot and bonnet are in really good condition. Body work is one of those things that is, literally, extremely painful but when done properly extremely rewarding as well. There is a YT channel called @Paint Society that worth a look.
Just subscribed ..... what epoxy are you using and how long do you wait till you block? Also after epoxy blocked is it streigt over with high build ? What’s blocked with thanks
Thanks so much!! We're using Eastwood's OptiFlow primers. With their epoxy, they said to wait at least 4 days before we start sanding. After we finish with our epoxy layers, we'll be rolling on about 3-4 coats of their urethane primer before doing final block sanding.
It's alot of work but just a helpful tip you will find out over time skim coating whole panels will work out in the best all you are doing is the same thing primer would but with a higher grade bodyfiller
Next time use a brush to clean off the major amount of dust onto the floor then sweep it up! And everything will stay cleaner! Then blow off what is remaining. Old body man tip!!
Bodywork is my least thing. Put it on….. Sand it off, Lather, Rinse, Repeat until your mask is caked with dust. But it’s much safer than lead of days past.
Just spot adding bondo on the lows and using those little hand blocks, when you sand will just move the highs and lows around causing more ripples. Those short blocks are useful for finish sanding. That is going to be a long process. Once the metalwork is done, you are better off spraying several coats of high build polyurethane primer (not spray-on bondo) over the entire car flat panel surface areas and use your long blocks. th-cam.com/video/BCFUNHIhCL0/w-d-xo.html
Been painting for a year but not every month of the year but when painted my truck again got orange peel but rather get rid of that and start polishing my truck this weekend only help I have is from videos on TH-cam nobody that really knows how to paint helping me accept God and Jesus but I will get better in time.

Great tips! Thank you!!
@@ElliesGarage I'm 58 and have been working on cars sence high school, I only wish we would've had a product like that back in the early 80s, we were doing good to find high build primer back then,, lol
You got a good workout 💪
Definitely!
I really enjoy working on cars and mc
I hate sanding body work !!
I know what you mean. Ha! 😂
Cool video looks good to me .
Dynamic Duo
I see one of y'all at the shells gas station. How's it going
Now both of y'all
Ha! Yep, that was a long trip home. We made it!
Really should use a guide coat
Ellie always use guide coat
Few of those litleones can somrtimes leave under the primer and it will fil those.but its need years on get that sense what yuo can leave under primer.i just find yuor channel and i think i see how this project go on.
Good video and great effort. For its age Carl's boot and bonnet are in really good condition. Body work is one of those things that is, literally, extremely painful but when done properly extremely rewarding as well. There is a YT channel called @Paint Society that worth a look.
Thank you so much! I'll check that channel out!
@@ElliesGarage there is also @The Gunman. Gun refers to spray paint gun.
@@ElliesGarage hi have they Eastwood stated you use was it 120 to block with ? Or 180 ....thanks
It's alot of work but just a helpful tip you will find out over time skim coating whole panels will work out in the best all you are doing is the same thing primer would but with a higher grade bodyfiller

Congratulations your prize is NOTHING

I just get the cheap $0.89 flat black from the dollar store that's what I use for my diet coke
Good job 👍 body work sucks but worth it in the end 😀
Right?! Thanks!!
Some guys will use guide coat on the body filler makeimg the peeping of the primer stage eaiser
Next time use a brush to clean off the major amount of dust onto the floor then sweep it up! And everything will stay cleaner! Then blow off what is remaining. Old body man tip!!
That sounds like the voice of experience. Thank you! We'll definitely do that next time!
I like powder guide coat better.
I never wasted my time banging on a hood or decklid,if the low spot was really low just fill it.or if not shrink it with a torch.
airfile...X pattern....I 've been a body and paint man since 73...
Always knock down your high spots, then fill the whole panel, never just patch fill the low spots.
Lot of work but we'll worth it see end result
Dont drop hammer or dolly in carpanels, its usually dont do dent but its possiple.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
WHY didn't you do that outside?? I just warched y'all spray that dust all over the garage,
Yea, that's a good idea. We'll definitely do that next time or maybe use a shop vac. Thanks for the help!
Look up pick and file method on youtube. You don't need to use filler. That is an old car with good metal.
We will. Thanks for the tip!
Every car that is restored has filler on it or glaze!!
Bodywork is my least thing. Put it on….. Sand it off, Lather, Rinse, Repeat until your mask is caked with dust.
But it’s much safer than lead of days past.
2 part glazing putty is your friend.....
