  • I picked up my first comic book collection in early January of 2023, and while it wasn't a huge collection with a ton of keys, it did have some great books to add to my personal collection. Unfortunately, the seller had a case of seller's remorse.

    Swamp thing #1 was in the photo of the books he was selling. You went over to check them out, offered him a fair price and he accepted. You paid him and left. This was by no means any kind of outstanding "collection" and a deal is a deal. I wouldn't have even entertained the idea of giving the book back. He sold it, you have it, end of story. IMO you were far too nice but, good on you for being cool about it all. In the end, you still have it. $500...please. Thanks for posting.

      Thanks for your input! It seems most people feel the same way. I can't believe I didn't see the book in the images he sent, but then again, it could have been another Swamp Thing book with a purple header for all I could tell.

    Yes it happened to me when I Was 11 years old.,. I sold some comics, to the local comic store... The owner called me up and told me... He had made a mistake and offered me more for the books, then they were worth
    And would I be a great guy, and refund some of his cash... The owner was an adult and experienced dealer, I was shocked to hear what he had to say.

      Man, in that case I would be much less inclined to agree to any sort of refund, especially since you were a kid, and they are a business dealing in that type of stuff for a living. They've got to put it down as a learning experience and move on. Thanks for sharing!

    • @reprintranch
      @reprintranch ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that's the key point -- ANY rational adult would ask the question, "am I sure I want to get rid of these comics?" and would only take steps to sell if the question was answered "yes."
      And we're not talking about some vast trove of comics that the owner might not fully recall -- the whole collection here fit into a single storage box. So the seller could have flipped through everything in 5 or 10 minutes and assured himself that he was not overlooking anything he wanted to keep. He probably did this, truth be told.
      Then after the sale somehow he glommed onto the idea "the first Swamp Thing is worth thousands" and convinced himself that this was such a loss that it was okay to behave like an 8-year-old to try to undo it.

    About 12 years ago, I sold some pretty nice books and even though I got pretty good money for them, I suffered some real sellers remorse, it took about 3 years to get over it. The one thing about at least 2 of the books I sold had gone through a huge HUGE increase in price! All of this was to make rent. Since then, I make sure to have funds ready for bad times. If you have really good books, don't sell them!

    It’s funny when people point out newsstands from the period those books were published as if they would somehow be rarer than the directs , the directs from that period would be the ones to chase as they’d be rarer .

      @collectingcasually  ปีที่แล้ว

      Fair assessment. Hence my name being Collecting CASUALLY. 😜 Definitely not an expert in this hobby, and that time period of shifting sales from newsstand to direct is still a bit cloudy for me.

    • @johnnydropkicks
      @johnnydropkicks ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually, the “newsstand” edition of Devil Dinosaur #1 was the only edition of that book printed because separate direct edition copies for Marvel were not printed until May 1979. A good way to remember this is that all regular sized Marvel comics that were priced at 35¢ or lower do not have a direct edition. The 40¢ and higher books do.

      She-Hulk#1 is a great example, there seems to be a equal amount of both Newsstand and Direct on Ebay at all times, and they sell for roughly the same amount, Newsstand 9.8 sells for a little more. It's a big print run book tons are available. At that time period comics were still not taken well care of so I think collectors view a high grade Newsstand more rare than a high grade Direct for that era even if the Direct Edition print run is lower.

      @@collectingcasually Believe it or not, that whole Pocket Books Marvel reprint line from 1977-79 has a moderate amount of collector interest -- I went to buy a couple of the Hulk books a few months ago and spent a lot of time reviewing eBay listings. Was surprised that all the Pocket Books in this series generally go for $10 or $20 apiece, plus shipping, if purchased individually. The ones Ryan got in this deal are in nice shape so they oughta be easily salable at $15 apiece.

    • @reprintranch
      @reprintranch ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Utubesanarc Thanks. I'm a reprint nut, so I love learning about this stuff. In case you're interested, here's more info --
      From 1977 to 1979, Marvel actually had _four_ paperback book lines going (that I know of) --
      One was the TPB-sized "Origins" series, which started in 1974 with "Origins of Marvel Comics" and continued through four more books, one per year until 1978.
      Next was the Pocket Books reprint series that we've been talking about, which began in 1977 (and I'm still not sure how many different books there were).
      Then in 1978-79 there were five TPB books, each devoted to reprints of a specific Marvel property (Hulk, Spidey, FF, Doc Strange, Cap).
      Finally, also in 1978-79, there was a non-reprint Pocket Books series, this one with new, text-only novels, written by folks like Len Wein and Marv Wolfman. Not sure how many different titles were produced.
      If you've never read "Origins of Marvel Comics," that's the one I consider most important, because it contains Stan Lee's first (and often most detailed) accounts of how the major Marvel Silver Age titles came about. (Much of what Lee says is open to debate, of course, but it's good reading and a real good starting point for anyone interested in the early days of the Marvel Age of Comics.)
