This British actress, who was a teenager at the time, not only sang this song note perfect, she also managed to sing it in an American accent and learned to sign it in ASL (which is very different from BSL, British sign Language) She’s a star
Always been a favorite song. But there is something very rich when Emilia starts to use sign language, like her soul kicks in and the warmth of the song melts the heart.
I'm 60 years old, and this song is one of my favorites. In its simplicity, Emilia's version surpassed even those I already liked. Such a talented young lady.
What a beautiful rendition of this timeless classic and to reflect this in sign language is a masterpiece of expression. At 62 trips around the local star this is a reminder of the beauty of my Rosita Bonita who knew sign language. She has been asleep in death 3 1/2 years and I await her resurrection back to life in the Paradise Earth.
Very glad that this movie won the Oscar for Best Film. Such a unique and fantastic story. Also, Emilia Jones’s performance, especially for this scene, was quite fantastic 🤟🏻
Magnificent voice!! Truly magnificent voice! It’s portrayed brilliantly too. We see her singing beautifully, but she is restrained, not truly expressing herself in the song, then she includes her family with the sign language, and she blossoms! The music coach understands when he sees her family above. It’s brilliant.
This movie is a terrific story of a family's undying love and commitment to one another. Joni's song performed in this touching way exudes the love and spirit of this movie!❤
I think this is one of the most touching moments in recent film. The song by the great Joni Mitchell combined with the love for a deaf family that finally gets to understand their daughters dreams of a life that they can never fully experience. Brilliant! I watched this on an Airplane trip and shed more than a few tears. The movie in many ways, I believe, can be paralleled to children from dysfunctional families, where one lives lost in a world where those around you are not capable of understanding.
My brother who passed a couple years ago was a student body president for Ogden's school for the deaf and blind many years ago. He was amazing in his skills as a welder but also fluently smooth in sign language. He was loved by all.
Two films have made a impact on me,and hope changes peoples perception of being deaf, one is Coda and the the other The silent Child both brilliant films.sign language needs to be taught at schools.
Aw heck! That made me mist up. Such lovely tone, pitch perfect and to render it in sign language just added to the emotional tribute this pretty girl brought to that timeless classic.
I've watched multiple interviews where she says she had to learn to sing AND learn sign language for this movie! Can you imagine doing that in addition to memorizing your lines and movements and placements?!?! She is phenomenal!
@@allisonarnold9935 The singing part was probably easy - her father is the Welsh singer Aled Jones. The impressive part is she learned American Sign Language so she could communicate with the deaf actors off-screen, not just learning what was needed for the film.
This is one of my all time favorite songs and seeing it expressed beautifully through signing makes me love it even more. Also a shout out to the pianist accompanying Emilia, I love his expressive but restrained enjoyment of her singing.
It is slowly starting to happen more and more since the early 2000’s. Starting with a revival of Big River. A year or two ago the revival of spring awakening incorporated sign language into the choreography. Accessibility is not just practical, it can be art in itself.
I just watched this having no idea about the movie. I'm a long time Joni Mitchell fan and this performance brought a tear to my eyes. I think using ASL made it even more emotional. Fantastic job! I think I better find this movie and watch it.
The first time I saw this I was impressed and moved. Seeing it again I am still amazed. There is still good in this world and that is what we need to focus on. God bless you.
I balled watching this just like I balled when I saw the movie. CODA is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. A movie that Cinema was made for. I guess if they were all that good this one would not be the jewel it is. If you haven't seen it GO WATCH IT! If you have then you understand.
The film is based on a French original version called "La Famille Belier", which is even more heart warming. Even though this version is well done and Emilia's singing impressive, you should check on the original song "Je vole" sung by Luanne.
Beautiful, but Judy Collins is still touring and singing this song better than anyone else ever will. Go see while you have the chance. You will not have another opportunity in your lifetime.

Amazingly apt description of what we see happen.
I'm 60 years old, and this song is one of my favorites. In its simplicity, Emilia's version surpassed even those I already liked. Such a talented young lady.
Absolutely agree.
It means more now at 62. I learned this song in 1974. ✌️
Her dad is a well known British singer who started his career as a young boy so she definitely has the family voice genes.
I first heard this as a child in the 70s and loved it since this young lady did herself and the song proud hi from england
At 66, I'm right there with you. This has to be one of the best songs ever.

One of the most beautiful songs ever written......and this performance, perfect.
Very glad that this movie won the Oscar for Best Film. Such a unique and fantastic story. Also, Emilia Jones’s performance, especially for this scene, was quite fantastic 🤟🏻
What is the name of the movie.. i tend to be five years behind lol. If not more

It’s brilliant.
One of the most beautiful songs of all time. And, what a gorgeous rendition.
I've loved this song since high school and it still brings tears to my eyes. Emilia Jones, you did it proud. Thank you for that.
I wish more people could see this film..Its truly a lovely film..and Emilia's singing is hypnotic..
My goodness, this girl can Sing!!! A classic song
All I can say is wow! So beautiful in so many ways, all the feels.
I seldom cry at movies. This scene turned on the waterworks. I was so happy it won the Oscar for Best Picture.
This movie is a terrific story of a family's undying love and commitment to one another. Joni's song performed in this touching way exudes the love and spirit of this movie!❤
The pianist, supporting this beauty! Thank you!
The guy judge, was actually moved too. Nice to see

😢 beautiful 😍 so heart-warming

Made me cry.
Traumhaft. Ich liebe dieses Lied und die Darstellung ❤
Sometimes understated proves to be more effective, as shown in this beautiful rendition of a classic… 🙌
I think this is the best version this song has ever had. Joni Mitchell’s masterpiece of a song fits to this movie.

Well, this is the movie I will be watching tonight. Just an incredibly beautiful tone to her voice!

Outstanding performance. Superb singing and the pianist was very restrained.

What a beautiful voice. This is absolutely gorgeous.
Beautiful performance voice and ASL make it so inclusive
Holy cow, where has this amazing young lady been, what an awesome voice & my Buddha she also signs. So much talent in one body. She has it all!!💙

Great song!
I loved Joni's original, then liked Judy Collin's even more, but this is best yet. Magnificent!!!
Neil Diamond has a cover too that is very good.
Beautifully done. Thank you.

Beautiful singing and the signing makes it even more meaningful 💕
Awesome voice.
Didm you notice how her hands started to fidget because they were not doing their job.
Great movie.
Yes! It’s brilliant
My favorite version of the song was done by Neil Diamond. I did see Judy Collins perform it live though. A beautiful song. Thanks for sharing this.
Majestuoso!!!!❤
Aun así: La versión original "La Famille Bélier" es mucho mejor. Se encontrará doblada o con subtítulos.

I admit I like this better than the original version - pretty rare.

Louane
Nah, the American one is better - if for no other reason than the deaf characters are actually played by deaf actors.
She’s Welsh🏴

Still waiting for the third verse -- the one that makes the song pertinent.
Notice how she comes alive when she starts signing.
Right, which one of you is cutting those damm onions!!!
😊
A thousand of these plays are mine!
Beautiful, but Judy Collins is still touring and singing this song better than anyone else ever will. Go see while you have the chance. You will not have another opportunity in your lifetime.
I've been trying to find this to watch, but I can't find it anywhere.
Look for CODA or even better "La Famille Bélier". It is certainly dubbed or subtitled in English.
When will this ever be available on DVD?
Where can I find the movie?
Why only 2 verses?
Beautiful. Which movie?
The movie is called "CODA" . It's one for the ages...truly and deeply heartfelt
I respect Joni Mitchell but I feel more the rendition of Emilia Jones.
Find Joni's recent rendition...sung from the perspective of a mature woman
