With my upcoming Japan trip and plans to vend at 2 card shows in the fall, my collecting is focusing a bit more on English vintage right now.
We're still collecting-focused, but around September/October I expect to ramp into buying 'inventory' in anticipation of vending, which will strongly push the pendulum back toward modern.
In this video, I'm again mostly looking at gold stars, 1st edition WOTC era stuff, Neo Shinings, and I try to make a deal with a vendor on some high end gold star slabs but we struggle to make it work.

Too many delusional vendors at these shows … I was at this show on Sunday … a dude was asking $375 for an umbreon V evo skies .. it’s like where are you getting these prices from ??
Probably trying to make profit from I try to be fair
I think it's up to the vendors to name their price. Nobody's forcing the customers to buy.. to me is how the vendors response to the customers that annoys me
I think if you're calling someone delusional over cardboard it might be a case of the pot calling the kettle black....
Someone paying $50,000 for a charizard is delusional .. I simply buy what I like at prices I like … oyama is going to intentionally or unintentionally going to make a lot of vendors cry
@@georgeallen4007 youve either got it all figured or youre just not very wealthy
Cool videos I'll be at the next show for sure. Hopefully I can find some cool Squirtles
Hearing a vendor try to explain to you how vending works is wild. He should really take a few lessons from some of the guys in the business around him. Basing your price on one singular last sold and not a combination of last solds is crazy.
It’s some dude using daddy and mommy’s money to be a wannabe vendor ..
Sometimes last couple comps are market moving up especially when it’s an auction for last comp. Don’t hate the vendor hate the last sale
I dont really agree with vendors when they say they have to keep a the price of a card high because of the vending fees. Thats a cost that is just a risk of vending. Of course you would love it if the buyers always cover your costs and you are vending for free. You are getting so much foot traffic on your inventory for cards that would be otherwise super hard to move otherwise. Either you could sell on ebay where there is a 12.5% fee on every card or you can sell on facebook and run the risk of someone scamming you. So I think everyone needs to be at least a lil flexible esp considering the price cards are usually fluid anyways.
YeahI 100% agree with you.
That vendor wants to reclaim money lost from vending and shank you with 70% market price. FkOFF! 😂😂
@@7ThumbsUp7 hear you! i find that by a mile most vendors i interact with are flexible or even generous. At least 8/10. Very rare in my experience to hear vendors bring up things like table fees unless i directly ask about it
I’m one of the vendors in the video, I think you really need to try vending yourself one time. Getting up at 8:00am on a Saturday, carrying all the inventory. Talk is cheap. We are just trying to be transparent. It’s like you think your dad was not fair when you were a kid and when you have a kid you understand. Now I’m your dad… 😅
Ya I agree than they want to buy your stuff at 70% and sale theirs at 100% or 90% . That doesn’t work with me I get them all the time I come with big cards. I should post my videos
The swirl tax lol love it and love some swirls
I don't *collect* swirls.. but given the choice of a swirl or no swirl, I'm always picking a big fat swirl! And it's probably the thing I dislike most about the 'bulkish' holos of modern era, the holo style has no potential for random interesting visual things like swirls!
Hi, any advice for assessing card conditions? (NM, LP, MP etc) you do it so quickly yet very accurate. thanks for your time!
@@ChasingCelebi hi! I made a video on 5 tips for buyers at card shows which goes into card conditioning basics!
Nothing but great videos! I love seeing new videos drop quick!
i like how you handle the cards right on the corners and sides
Just bought a card from your ebay store, didn't know you had a youtube channel as well. Super dope! Hitting that like and subscribe button :)
@@iamteacher3088 thank you on both counts!!
“I don’t need the explanation”damn bro I like the videos but you don’t have to act that way chill 😅
Thanks for the feedback! It was a 20-30 minute interaction and I started to feel a bit patronized and lost my patience. Obviously I could've edited that out of the interaction but I left it in cause it's really how it went. I don't edit videos to make anyone look better or worse, myself included. Hope you can appreciate that 🤝
The buyer got to that point perhaps because previously the seller said I don't care, but that's where the temperance comes in because then the buyer gives him an explanation of why he doesn't buy cards in Japanese and the seller didn't tell him the same thing. "I don't need the explanation." good content but that attitude of a buyer is not necessary.
@@oyamastrading I appreciate you leaving it in just make sure to leave both sides as it would be fair for the vendor to get his point across thanks 🙏
agree
Lol fr
I mentioned in another comment a vendor selling an umbreon V ( evo skies ) for $375 at this show .. the dude with the magikarp hat selling a Misty’s favor for $550 when market is $420 ish … oyama is the only one calling out some of these people on their BS … the hobby is becoming less and less about collecting and more about money hungry people…
Yeah that guy with Magikarp hat is always way high. I pass him by at shows.
Interesting well times change some folks it's a side thing we're it's better to move fast money. Others think there sitting on gold n want to wait for the "right" buyer. Best practice is like mentioned. Call em out or like wise. Keep it pushing. If I see rude. They dnt deserve my money..
@@bluebanisters2889 its interesting when you go to so many shows and you start recognizing faces and knowing exactly who are easy ppl with work with and who are hard ones. And after awhile you look over at the ones with over priced cards and see no one is at their tables. I wonder if they are aware of it too
Great video! Ngl these vids been an inspiration I grabbed the cam/mic you recommended and recorded my first buyer pov at a card show yesterday! Been looking to get into the poke TH-cam stuff for a while I just didn’t want to do pack opening. Quick question…do you walk around the the chest harness with the camera? I got it, but I recorded with the selfie stick thing yesterday. Going to another show next weekend and I’ll have my first 2 vids out hopefully within a month on a new channel.
I seen him at a show n did realize tell he uploaded a video of one I was at. He has a chest mount n looks like a gopro I believe. N good luck on ur channel. Always cool to watch shows and see how the market is at different places 👌
@@Bonsabii i do use a chest mount! I think a tripod clipped to a backpack would work too. Head mount i think would make the interactions less natural. Everyone i interact with knows I’m filming but i think if it were plastered on my head or if the cam were in their face it would feel weird. Look forward to seeing your videos!!!
What’s the cam you guys got?
@@BakersCollectibles DJI osmo action 4 + the mic 2
@@oyamastrading yea I wouldn’t be able to do it on my head😂even the chest was a little too embarrassing for the first show but nobody rlly cared about the camera so now I feel much more comfortable and the show this weekend I think I’ll try the chest pov. Although I was making a deal at the show and was more focused on the video footage that I accidentally left $40 of cards on his table. L

Was looking for trade shows in the bay area, didn't see this one.
This one happens pretty regularly! Westgate Mall every few months most of the year I believe
I always see .86 on the phone calculator. I might have missed it on some prev video but why is it at 86? Hehe
If it's a calculator my best guess is percentage of a number n 85 is middle of 80 to 90 so maybe 86 is lucky. 🤷 😅
@@aniclips3136 @jayg9209 it is a %! Ebay fees. Even if buying for my PC i know my focus sometimes changes in collecting so if I’m gonna spend more than about $100 I like to do a .86 multiplication to see what i’d have to pay to break even if i sold the card on ebay. A lot of what i buy at these shows is not necessarily to profit off of, but rather to buy at a price where I’m confident if I decide to get rid of it later, I won’t take a big loss.
I dont do the calculation for small PC buys because if i pay $16 for a $16 card and sell it for $13-17 later I dont mind losing $2 as much as i’d mind losing $50
Almost 1000, underrated channel, hope to be ur 1000th subscriber

85%?? Damn SoCal needs to step ot up 😂😂
@@GiggityGiggity_Jawn how does SoCal differ? Never been to shows there
Usually only 75-80%
Rarely see 85.
Interesting! I wonder why the geographic difference. Maybe more competition up here puts some pressure on folks to offer competitive rates?
I’ve been to shows in Texas where they trade at 90% and buy at 80% ..
bruh that guy is never going to move that japanese gold treecko dude is vending to flex his collection didnt sell one card😂
@@Bandersonloud91 i think there are buyers for that card for sure but as the convo went on I felt like he wanted to get rid of it more than I wanted it. I know he did make a few deals at that show so I dont think he was just flexing even though it was a tougher interaction than I’m used to having at these shows :)
The dude collecting the gyarados and his buddy with the black label latias latios all they do is flex … I’ve seen them at the East bay show and the collected in Santa Clara … one table I skip all the time … coming to these shows to flex is kind of lame
You are the master of negotiating
Good episode 👏. Learned alot. About gold stars and how some vendors are collectors and are tuff to negotiate with 😅 ur first interaction usually stays with u. U did good n kept ur patients. Once I heard I dnt care.. about ur ebay prices n him to say fees.. man. 😅 an good luck on vending in the future. Just a heads up I only buy 20-60$ slabs. N love loose cheap cards. There's always cool dollar binders that I go threw for cool art works. I found some cool stuff there. 23:15 that guy had a cool charizard from the movie for ten bucks. I forgot to go back to get. 🤦 good luck on the next show!
@@jayg9209 thanks for watching and sharing! Ive got a $1-3 binder all ready to roll. Im consolidating toward mid-high end mostly just for space reasons (rather try to make $20 on a $200 slab than $2 on a $20 slab, takes up the same space in my house!) but i do have and plan to have a nice variety of price points when I’m vending!
@@oyamastradingi suggest private market sales. I stay finding 10 to 15 dollars slabs sometimes half off market. Auctions are cool too. But yea it's still like nickel n dimes sometimes. I dnt understand how since it's 15-25 to get a card graded.. its mostly collectors thining out there collection. I always find good deals on sealed products too. Would u ever sell packs? I know it's probably a inventory thing too. But u are right. Best target market is mid to high grade. Also I suggest some free cards for kids. I think that is cool even if bulk. I'm sure some will donate too
Maaan that crytal Kabutops is so clean! Get this man monetized guys, he only uploads heat!
@@TheDDLDProductions i really considered it! Thanks for the love always. We just hit 1k and turned monetization on :)
Always putting out 🔥🔥
People are arguing over 5 or 10 bucks is insane.
Depends on the context, I think! The difference between 775 and 780 is a little silly on both sides maybe.. but sometimes for the vendor $5 is their entire margin, and sometimes for the buyer $5 is the difference for which something could just be bought online or that breaks a set budget. I tend to think in percentage terms with Pokémon cards, arguing over $5 on a $15 card is pretty different than arguing over $1000 vs $1005 of course.
@@oyamastrading I hear ya, from a buyers perspective I'm not arguing over $5 for anything lol if I want the card I'm not letting $5 decide me getting it or not.
You guys are to hard on us vendors. Not everyone is out to get you. Sometimes I post stuff at prices because I want to keep it unless someone wants to pay my price.
And labor/gas/table fee do go into it. Not saying the guy in the video is wrong just some of the comments people don't understand the work
Someone just got lucky bought the Kyogre for $400 as an LP
@@leop12768 i think youre referring to the comp right? I actually agree that was a lucky auction pickup for that person, and the $425 the vendor priced was more consistent. We’d agreed on that point. I almost always buy from this vendor at shows so he and I have a good trust and rapport going 🙏
@@oyamastrading I wish it was me that sniped that lol! Kyogre is such a sick card as Gold Star!
You are hands down one of the most annoying negotiators I have found on TH-cam.
@@spencergotcher 😂 who are the least annoying?
As someone whos been vending smaller shows recently, i sort of get where vendors come from because if a card sells for say $500 on ebay the buyer is actually paying even more with shipping and taxes, so on one end getting for the actual price sold is a little deal, but same as a seller you only get 85% give or take after fees and shipping. But this guy was just too much
Appreciate you bringing a balanced perspective.
As a buyer I never run the “86% ebay take home” calc as a means of using that as the comp, it’s just a calculation to understand my potential downside risk. I dont need to profit on a PC card, but i want to avoid a $100 loss if the direction of my collection changes. I did feel a bit jumped on about it in this interaction but obviously things ended very cordially!
@@oyamastrading yeah I totally get it for PC stuff. I’d be happy to not have to pay shipping and taxes lol. But if your goal is to vend and flip I totally understand both sides but there is a happy medium. This guy didn’t really think so. But regardless awesome video
