I find General Hoth a really underrated character. He perfectly represents the traditional Jedi values being constantly threatened by the horrors of war, not to mention the heroic way he died after everything he went through was pretty cathartic. Shame we didn't see him again as a romantic young jedi knight in the "Knight Errant" project
Curiously, Hoth always had an indisputable influence on the Dark Side. The Rakata had steles and star maps there, not to mention that a cult dedicated to the resurrection of Marka Ragnos established an important base in that place. Without a doubt, a planet that attracts people with hearts as cold as its climate
Aye. I’m glad that Vader brought those darl hearted, dark side worshipping rebel terror cult to heel. Its horrible that they still had time to flee with significant amount of ships but I’m sure that this cult will be quelled, I have faith in our generous emperor Palpatine!
*Fun Fact:* The Battle of Hoth is heavily based on the iconic battle on ice from "Alexander Nevsky", an iconic 1938 film about the German Crusaders' invasion of La Rus during the Middle Ages. This film greatly inspired by all the iconic war films we know, such as Star Wars or LOTR. Also, the historical conflict between the Teutonic knights and the Russians served as inspiration for the Mandalorian Wars, being King Alexander Nevsky a clear inspiration for the creation of Revan.
Also during the Great Galactic War, there was a naval battle between the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire that took place above the planet. Many ships from both sides crashed onto the surface of the planet. During the Cold War and the Galactic War, Hoth was locked into 3 way resource battle between the Republic, Empire, and the White maw pirates for the wreckage of those crashed ships. There’s also a starship graveyard located on the planet
I've always enjoyed the extreme "habitble" worlds in Star Wars. All of its kind of an homage to Flash Gordon with the moons of Mongo. It wished they had kept the scene in Empire where Threepio removes the warning sticker on the door where the Rebels had trapped some Wampas.
Hoth is yet another Star Wars planet that surprisingly has real scientific precedent. It resembles what Earth may have looked like during the Cryogenian; an era in Earth's deep geologic history where the entire surface from poles to equator was covered in kilometer-thick ice sheets. And despite all that, life uh uh uh uh uh found a way, much like on Hoth. Though it's thought that most if not all life on Earth at that time was microbial.
Curiously, Luke and the Wampa whose arm he amputated met again 10 years later. When Luke returned to Hoth with his lover Callista Ming, he encountered the wampa (the cusl had organized his own pack). Since the animal recognized Luke as the guy who disabled him, the Jedi had to kill him in self-defense.
I love how in canon we actually got to learn more about that particular Wampa. What seemed like just your typical monster of the planet actually had some depth to it. For starters it didn't just attack Luke and his Tauntaun to eat for itself, it was actually trying to get food for its family that were starving. When it lost its arm it made their chances of survival even much harder, I don't think this Wampa and its family had died later on, but I found it to be a very nice and welcome addition to this minor character per se.
There is actually a sad reason why Hoth became a rebel base. While he was fleeing the Empire, Luke crash-landed on said planet, which by then had fallen into oblivion. There, he met a man and his beautiful daughter, who claimed to be noble fugitives from the Empire. However, Luke eventually discovered that they were both actually organic androids who believed they were humans. Luke tried to help them, but the paranoia of the "father" caused a fight in which the "daughter" was accidentaly killed while defending Luke. Even though he was aware of her nature, Skywalker considered her a living being and felt sadness for her "death", to the point of even making her a grave. He thus would honor the android girl by suggesting the Rebel Alliance to establish the new base there.
