Wendover Productions did a video explaining how incredibly sufficient the railway in America is, explaining how it costs $0.04 to move 1 ton 100 miles by train versus $0.20 to move 1 ton 100 miles by semi truck.

I'm just listening to the audio book version of "These Dead Lands" by Stephen Knight, a novel about a zombie apocalypse and in the second book of the series, a bunch of surviving National Guard and US Army battalions and companies try escaping the zombie hordes that have overrun the East Coast on board a train, driving to Colorado. They load a lot of vehicles, mostly Hunvees and MRAPs on to flat bed carts and tie them down. So far so good, but towards the end of the book, the train derails and then they just somehow unload the vehicles from the carts, using unspecified ramps.
I immediately suspected that to be BS because I never saw any flat bed train carts with their own ramps. As far as I know, they have special loading bay installations with concrete ramps at train stations, where those flat bed carts get docked in groups and then the vehicles drive on or off the carts.
How would such ramps even work? The vehicles would have to drive off the cart and on to the rails to get off.
Now I am looking up videos and pictures of military vehicle transport trains and infrastructure, to find out whether I'm right in calling BS on that book and it seems I am.
Sorry for spoiling the derailment thing to anyone who might be interested in reading (or listening to) those books, but they really aren't good, so I didn't really ruin much of worth to you.
The premise sounds good, but what you get is just badly written, one-dimensional pseudo-characters having endless, ridiculously pointless discussions with each other over and over again, with some rather short action scenes in between.
None of the characters talks like a normal human being and one tell tale sign for a bad author is when characters find stuff that isn't really funny hilarious, because they have to, according to the author. Like some character will say or do something that really isn't that funny and everyone around them will act as if he is the greatest comedian ever.
For example, at some point during the main character's journey, they come by a farm and they decide to steal some cows and afterward one of the "super cool" special forces operators they have with them reports on "Operation C.O.W." as if it would have been a combat operation and all the characters act as if he were Richard Pryor or something.
It is just embarrassing and makes the author look really dumb.
But even if the novels, characters and dialogue were written better, I just hate it when authors just pull stuff like train carts coming with their own ramps that allow you to unload MRAPs from them in the middle of nowhere, out of their ass.
I once tried writing a fiction novel. I stopped and threw it away after a few chapters, because I realized it was garbage. That is why I take it personal when I see stuff getting published and sold for real money, which is worse than the trash I threw away.
