You all have seen this knife in action for a while now and here comes the review! This is the Varusteleka Terävä Jääkäripuukko 110 with leather sheath.
    ...
    Link : www.varustelek...
    Other Knives Link :
    www.varustelek...
Price : 54.99 USD with the sheath - $30 with no SHEATH
Leather Sheath - plastic insert - double folded leather
    Very strong
    Excellent seams and stitching
Snap retention - when walking around camp, it doesn’t have to be snapped - tight enough to keep it secure
    Leather belt loop
    Very ridged
    High scandi grind
    Rubber texturize handle
Tacky. Doesn’t slide around - tough, has lasted my months of use.
    Wet or dry, very secure
    I like the palm swell
    Feels awesome
    Full tang
    Lanyard hole - Pummel
    Sharp spine - finger nail
Fine quality carbon steel, traditional Finnish puukko blade profile with a slight drop point and a practical grind guarantee a razor sharp knife straight out of the box, and it's easy to maintain too. This is the shorter model, blade length 110 mm.
The Jääkäri (or Jaeger for you foreign devils, the name derives from the backbone infantry of the Finnish army) is nothing fancier than a very simple, very practical puukko knife. The Jääkäri is a buddy you can trust to get the job done and you don´t need to be too careful either, these are built for use.
    Specs
Steel: Carbon Steel 80CrV2 59 HRC
Blade Length: 4.3" or 110 mm
Blade Height: 1" or 26 mm
Blade Thickness: .157" or 4 mm
Blade Edge: 23 Degree Scandi with micro secondary bevel
    Spine Edge: 90 Degree
    Handle: Full Tang
Handle Material: Direct Molded Textured Rubber
Overall Length: 9.5" or 240 mm
    Weight (w/out sheath) 6.17 oz. or 175 g.
    Blade
Traditional and proven functional Finnish puukko profile. The thickness of 4 mm makes this a bit more robust than most old timey traditional Finnish puukkos. The grind is a scandi grind with a tiny secondary bevel, truly the most common type of puukko grind.
    …..
These knives sale VERY quickly so you will need to move quickly if you want one.
Do I recommend it? Absolutely! It is everything that a good forest knife needs to be.
    Sharp. Simple. Rugged. Inexpensive.
If this version is sold out at the time that you are watching it, I have included a link to the other knives that are for sale. There are numerous versions including longer ones which you may want to consider.
This is one of the most impressive knives that I have seen and used in a long time. For the money, I’m not sure if I can think of a better product that would compare to it. In my book, this knife is trust worthy and I would equally consider it just as good as any Mora! That says a lot!
Out of the box it does through sparks and mine has done very well but I have seen comments from others whose spine has been slightly rounded.

It isn't made in China anymore so that will account for a lot of that, along with demand of course. And it's still way cheaper than the garberg. As I've got 2 garbergs that I got before I got one of these (first the stainless then the carbon) 'IMO' this is the better knife, and came with a much better edge. So yes it's a few quid more now, but I was happy to pay that knowing it wasn't made in China anymore. Nothing against the Chinese. But I'm not into patronising basically slave labour.

Knives in Finland are usually measured person by person. What I have been taught is that a knife (to be a normal "use it to everything" -campknife or hikingknife) should not be longer than the width or you palm + 1 cm (~1/3 inc). That is also why there is normally a womensknife and a mansknife. They very lenghtwise a bit, so it is more ergonomic for the user. Of course then there is also other lenghts of knife for different purposes and I myself own quite many different size knives as well. Luckily everyone in our family is a bit knifecrazy :D

It is still on sale at the varusteleka.com. That is a Finnish webshop, the one that originally ordered the knife into production under their own brand "Terävä". Actual manufactor is Laurin Metalli Oy, very traditional "small" workshop since 1918, mainly focused on knives (puukot) in upper 3/4 Finland, also known as Pohjanmaa. Pohjanmaa has taditionally been the puukko area of manufacturing, most of the known brands come from that area of Finland. Best knives in the world, allthough Mora in neighboring Sweden is also very very good indeed:)

The 'camp cock' thing is an outlet for frustration for the FDF conscripts while on exercises in the woods. Sort of 'see, I'm this cheesed off'' *carving a camp cock the size of the frustration* kinda way. Varusteleka has done a good job carnivalizing some of the quirky traditions of Finnish conscripts.
The price is an interesting observation, but that's what I'd say is a fair price for an industrially produced puukko or any other knife that has marginal hand finishing. The raw material bought in bulk don't cost all that much and most of the manufacturing is done by machines with some hand operations. That's why it's such a wonder for me that people around the world charge and pay 100 bucks and more for a serviceable (non-custom, non-hand-finished) knife without batting an eye, since in many cases the price difference is layers of marketing rather than anything tangible. :)

    • @762rk95tp

Great knife, I’ve used it and abused it more than 20 years. Nowadays however, I prefer jääkäripuukko 140. Does almost all the same tasks as sissipuukko, but is more versatile (meaning, it’s more of a carving knife whereas M95 is more of a chopping knife). Both are great knives though and you can’t go wrong with either one of them, depending on personal preference of course.

I brought the 110 and 140, also got them both in stainless. I definetely recommend the 110 over the 140. I took the 110 to a stone, zero grind, no micro-bevel, and I got the 110 so sharp, its literally like a pocket scalpel. It would be devastating as a self defence blade, although a bit long fro EDC, imo. I studied knives a lot and consider myself an expert on defence, hunting and bushcraft blades, and I've collected for 50 years. This handle design is the best you can get for utility AND defence. Its fantastic and not too girthy either, just right. Randall calls it the 'border patrol handle shape'. All this stuff you see out there on new defence blades is BS. This is as good as it can get, really. Unless you sharpened half or all of the top spine, which isn't legal in many areas anyway, or buy a serious dagger. Plus you have untility which is what you need the knife for the most. I'm sorry to say this tops my Fallkniven F1. Despite being an incredible knife, the F1's handle is fussy and the guard is inaqequete. I which the 110 had a 3.5" blade for EDC and a flat and small pommel for hammering instead of that hook, or none at all as its rusts!

Thanks for this interesting review. I have the 140 MM bladed version, and have just sent for the same but in stainless steel. I have been absolutely delighted with my knife. I am a great fan of Scandinavian knives, having bought my first, a "Marttiini Lynx", in 1966. It served me well for decades, until somebody stole it. Conditions where I live, Scotland, are similar to Scandinavia (it is not far away) and what works well there, does so here. i have bought other things from "Varusteleka", a jacket, hats and fine leather belt. Quality alway excellent, service first class. What an outrageous sense of humour! I love it.

I have the 140 and the 85...and I love them!
As I tend to bring the taiga machete as I prefer to pair it with the 85... with a silky saw and a old fashioned friction folder or a siberian neck-knife for food I am good to go as far as blades are concerned.
I have heard critics on you can't replace a damaged handle on the field...someone has to be either very stupid or very clumsy to destroy a ruberish handle of the puukos on the field...
And a full enclosing handle might be important on protecting your fingers on extreme temperatures from the contact with the metal of the full tang... have you seen those videos of people kissing lamp post by minus 20° and being stuck to the metal...?
About the drawing: yes, perhaps innapropriate...but is it so for people whith a different culture (like sauna together....)?

Something about how this knife is made seems to have changed since this video was posted. I have handled six or seven examples of this knife in the past year or so, and every one of them has a 45 degree bevel on the spine. It will strike a ferro rod, but only with a good deal of effort and a touch of finesse. I will be squaring mine up soon, because even my old Schrade 3-blade stockman makes better sparks than this knife does. That said, I love the knife in every other aspect and bought it after trying Moras, Jokers, and even an ESEE-3.

have heard experts say the best knives in the world come from Lappland. saw a nice documentary on it too. The traditional authentic ones are mindblowing pieces of art and of course craftmanship. Also: i just ordered mine :D

Thank you Luke!! I am so happy with it man. A very serious, brilliantly "basic" knife, it feels and lies absolutely perfect in my hand, love the grip.My mom said its rather heavy but what does she know, honestly for me its just right and even on the light side, in total its like its not there but only very subtly, like part of the hand! So mean!! cant wait to use it. Now I have much bigger knives but my brother said "you could kill a bear with that " to my 110 - hes probably right :D The sheath is gorgeous and so practical as well. What a steal. Happy new year and Take care

got on the mailing list for 110 a& 140 carbons w/sheath when they have more in stock . will be my 2nd bushcraft/camp/fishing knife . my 1st/current is a condor kephart , blade is ok but i want a grippier handle and a much more secure sheath and a steel harder than 1095 without breaking the bank . the VTJ's locking dangler is very handsome IMO and looks solid and 59 HRC . plus scandi is supposed to be the bees knees so i'll get to try several new flavors of koolade , haha . thanks for your videos ;) .

    Just ordered mine!
I spent a week here at Pigeon Forge.. spent a few days at Smokey Mountain Knife Works and checked out the TOPS BoB, ESEE 4/5/6 and 4hm, 6hm, Benchcraft Bushcraft, Mora Garberg (All sub 120 btw) and settled on the Garberg , I saw your video and ordered a Puukko instead.. SMKW by the way has better prices than any online website. especially ESEE and TOPS. But not Condor/Mora. Well after much debating I ordered one of these Puukko 110's to replace my Condor Bushlore. I might still go back and pick up a Becker 16 with the money I saved.

That's an absolute bargain for $55, I have a slightly cheaper but very similar scandi, a Bahco 2449 'Wrecking Knife', it's got a plastic sheath, but generally can be bought for about £20 (sorry, I'm a Limey) . Mine stays near my stove for turning kindling into feather sticks for fire lighting. Very similar blade geometry and measurements, so I can understand why you love yours, especially in that sheath.

Luke, My Traditional Puukku is the Stromeng Bhuku STAK Puukku and my Modern Puukku is my Cold Steel SISU it's a close copy of Tapio Wirkkala Puukku, But in the San Mai 3 with Stainless Bolster and Pommel and the Handle is Linen Micarta with a Beautiful leather sheath. infact I have them posted on my Google Plus. ,, .

I don't have this knife yet but I like everything about it-lengh,thickness,full tang, the high scandy, the sheath, the price. The stainless model.Looks like the most functional and yet tough knife around.I like the Garberg ,but its handle, sheath and scandy grind are inferior.
Bluring the picture was pathetic.Seriously! The modern pussification needs to stop.

60€ + 10€ shipping + 10€ if you want the stainless variant which would come out for roughly 80€ which is around 15€ cheaper as the Mora Garberg + shipping where I live and I guess those two have to be compared. Pretty good deal, although I dislike the ring at the end instead of a more solid pommel like the one on the Garberg, however I like the rubberized handle more than the slippery one of the Garberg. Would be cool to have the pommel redesigned a bit so you could use it too without fear of breaking off the ring, or for the Garberg a better handle and a bit of a reduced price. Both could do with a few more millimeters, maybe around 11,8cm blade length or something because I feel as a full tang knife they are a tiny bit too short to actually make use of the durability benefits of a full tang (compared to a bushcraft black which is way cheaper and sure as heck won't break on you either).

Fun fact when you received Puukko in Finland it is sorta your now old enough "fully responsible man/women" also when you receive Puukko you're supposed to give something back to show that you respect the person giving you the knife and not wanting stab them in their back.

This thing is soo finish. Make a traditional knife that is a: cost effective b: reliable c:practical. Make it 100% functional, don't give a dime for decoration. A machine. And then name it what? Aurora? Stardust? Galaxy? Destroyer? No! Name it "sharp hunter knife". I love it.
