Phil it must be a new challenge finding places to run after you’ve moved to a new place. What a great tip to find trails. I’m going to try that out! Your plan for eating during your 100K ultra sounds great, eating little bits at a time. By the way Happy 50th Birthday, enjoy your long weekend in Belgium! 🎉🎉🎉
Hi Gill. Thanks for stopping by and watching my video while you thaw out!! Bruges was amazing thanks. Will make a start at the editing for it tonight but it may take a while!
What a lovely and tranquil run in the woods, Phil. Do you also let a friend or loved one know where you're running if it's a new route? Here's wishing you the best birthday as you celebrate in Belgium!
That's a lovely place to run. You should watch the movie 'In Bruges' before your trip! Nice to get a preview of the type of landscape I'll see when I'm doing the Nene valley run in June.
Ah the Nene Valley! I used to live there and have walked the entire length of the nene valley way when I was put on furlough during the lockdowns! Thanks for taking a look at my video Tadeusz and the very best of luck for your run in June :)
I'm training for something called Double Everesting, hiking up the same hill non-stop until I accumulate the elevation gain of two Mt. Everests -- or 58,000 feet (or 16,696 meters) of vertical. Like you, I'm trying to balance the need for a plan to get me prepared and not wanting to take the fun and spontaneity out of it. Great video. Thanks for sharing.
@@trailrunningphil Am happy to have found your channel. Training my mind for the double Everesting ... well, actually doing long bouts at steep incline (on the treadmill at 20%+ or on the stairclimber) for hours at a time will give me some confidence. I'm also doing a good amount of visualization, trying to picture me on the hill, picture me getting bone-tired, wanting to quit and then seeing myself get up and do another lap up the hill. Got any tips yourself?
@@mid-lifechallenge consider finding yourself a good mantra to say to yourself that means something to you. Some people would say "find your why". I would take it one step further and find the reason behind the reason why your taking this challenge on. Find that emotional energy and your mind will back your body up and believe it can do it on the day.
Dear Phil, your clip was a delight to watch. Your commitment to trail running and preparing for ultra marathons is truly inspiring. Your use of walking guide books to find new trails is a breath of fresh air in today's technology-driven world. Sending you positive energy and wishing you the best of luck on your upcoming 50s and holiday.
@@MihaiGoRunning It would a great addition to my videos, but I seem to be settled on making the videos very natural with all real sounds and no music these days so not sure if it would fit in with that. Its a great piece of kit though! I will look forward to watching yours :)
Your enthusiasm for exploring new trails really shone through here mate. There's loads of hills! 😂 I don't get described as ninja or brave very often lol. Trees are just amazing for sure. We went to Belgium once and had a beer called Quack, served in weird glasses that looked like something from a science lab. Enjoy the chocolate and waffles, old chap! 👍🏻🙂
Thanks for stopping by mate. Honestly I feel like a little kid in a sweetshop when I found somewhere brand new that I love to run in. That evergreen section of that wood near the end of my run was so beautiful! I always take loads of footage out from my raw footage, mostly of me waffling on too much!! In this video, it was about how disappointed I was at not feeling comfortable about filming the front of peoples lovely houses. It just feels wrong to me although some of them were really lovely and these walking loops always include a few villages in between the countryside for a bit of a change.
Hi Phil, good idea to use walking guide books for your route and use it for runs. I agree with you it's alright to enjoy and be "chilled" but without the actual training and getting your body used to it, it's not actually easy to do it at all. I still don't have the watch where you can download a route on, it would be so handy to have something like this. I still just use OS maps. Congratulations on your upcoming 50s and your holiday coming up.
Thankyou so much for taking the time to comment Olga :) I tried for quite a while using a mobile phone for navigation but it felt clumsy to keep pulling it out to see where you were!
@@OlgasBritishFells It took me a little while to stop always checking it and If im being totally honest its much harder in a city than in the countryside with just the bread crumb trail I have but I dont do much running in cities... except for next week in Bruges!! eek!
Lovely run there Phil, reminds me of some of the trails I did in Norfolk last year. Big fan of the cliff bloks too, nice and easy on the stomach. Completely agree on the little bits approach for food in ultras, makes it go down easier for sure. Happy birthday for next week! Enjoy the trip to Bruges and look forward to seeing your running there
Great running Phil! Big shout out to Mark G the ninja! Clif Bloks are great I really enjoy the strawberry ones. 😎🤘
Yes Ben!! The strawberry ones are good too! Thanks for stopping by mate. Hope your staying fit and well mate :)

Hi James! Great to see a new face in the comments! Tell me, how do you intend to train your MIND for that challenge you're taking on?
