Gnostic Baptism Ritual from the Book of Jeu - Pistis Sophia - Nag Hammadi Library - Gnosticism

- While texts from the Nag Hammadi library have revolutionized our understanding of Gnosticism, we still know very little about just how Gnosticism was practiced in the ancient world. What were their rituals, hymns, gatherings, and daily life like? In this episode of Esoterica we explore a Gnostic Baptism ritual found in the Bruce Codex Book of Jeu. What we find is a complex set of rituals by which one purifies one's soul in order to begin one's ascent back to the divine One. We also explore the various layers of reality described in the Jeu I and some connections with ancient magic.

This. Was. Fantastic! Thank you!
I'm very interested in soul ascent schemes and I've been obsessed with the soul ascent in the Gospel of Mary for a few years now (not as complicated as that in the Book of Jeu but easier to apply to modern life). I think the usual English translation of at least two of the Coptic verbs are questionable and distort the overall context of the text as we have it. I'd love to hear your take on that text!
Also, DeConick's essay in that Collection you mentioned is really good. It's been an important paper for me and my Gnostinerd friends for a few years now. It's helpful for folks having a hard time wrapping their heads around the soul ascent concept, we've found.
Anyways, I'll stop geeking out now. Gonna go pick some more through your channel!
Very interesting discussion about the unidentified plant, 'cynocephalia', there is also the unidentified plant kasdalanthos in Jue, as well as the nature of the incense burned throughout the ritual. I have discussed this and other potential references to psychoactive substances in Gnosticism, and I am wondering if the use of drugs in these sorts of rituals is something you have considered? www.cannabisculture.com/content/2016/12/20/early-christianitys-drug-fuelled-magic-rituals/
@@CBennett420 Totally possible but until we can definitively identity these plants, for me at least, the jury is out. The with recent discovery at Tel Arad, its looking more and more possible that religious cannabis used was present in the Ancient Near East.
@@TheEsotericaChannel yes, and it fits perfectly with the identity of the plant known as kaneh bosm, which myself and others have argued is a reference to cannabis - this is a documentary I made some years ago on kaneh bosm as cannabis - th-cam.com/video/QC8g_26f0qE/w-d-xo.html
there is also the evidence of topical and burnt cannabis resin from 3-4th century AD Bet Shemesh - A 1990s archeological dig in Bet Shemesh near Jerusalem has documented that cannabis medicine was in use in the area, up until the fourth century. In the case of the Bet Shemesh dig, the cannabis had been used as an aid in child bearing, both as a healing balm and an inhalant. This find garnered some initial attention, but its implication were unfortunately not fully realized at the time, as can be seen from the Associated Press article, “Hashish Evidence is 1,600 years Old”, that appeared in the Vancouver, British Columbia, newspaper, the Province, on June 2nd, 1992;
Archeologists have found hard evidence that hashish was used as a medicine 1,600 years ago the Israel Antiquities Authority said yesterday.
Archeologists uncovered organic remains of a substance containing hashish, grasses and fruit on the abdominal area of a teenage female’s skeleton that dates back to the fourth century, the antiquities authority said in a statement.
Anthropologist Joel Zias said that although researchers knew hashish had been used as a medicine, this is the first archeological evidence.
The teen, whose skeleton was unearthed in a family tomb in Bet Shemesh near Jerusalem, died in childbirth, the remains of a full term fetus in her pelvis.
The statement said the organic remedy of hashish, grasses and fruit “had been placed on the abdominal area, apparently to reduce labor pains and hemorrhaging, and to increase the force of uterine contractions.”
A similar synthetic substance is used today to prevent vomiting in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, the statement said.(Associated Press 1992).
This channel just makes me so happy. It’s like getting to sit in on the college courses I never appreciated at the time, but now am hungry for and can get for free with a celebrity-like professor.
So i've been marathoning your channel for the better part of a month now and honestly one thing I like is with how complex the topics are theres a bunch of videos I feel I need to watch a few times to fully understand, and as someone who gets hyperfixated on one sub topic on youtube a lot I quite apricate the depth!
Dr. S. You are one of the coolest, well educated, and dedicated religious scholars that I have been fortunate enough to learn from in my short 60 years on the planet. And.... Now, dont let this go to your head....but..... you are fricking funny. Thank you Rabbi, I will be returning many, many days to humbly learn. Its the bread of life. Truly. And blessing and good health to your family. Shalom!
Thanks so much for watching and the kind words. Though, to note, I'm not a rabbi. Glad you find the content insightful!
I was wakened in the middle of my sleep in order to remember a 4 digit number that is very important ... My first thought was playing the lottery lol ... Then I checked my TH-cam account and this video popped up ... I have known the importance of baptism for quite a while now, so the title drew me in ... Imagine my surprise to hear you talk about the ciphers!
I'm going to get the Books of Jeu ... Thank you!
These Gnostic rituals and texts and stories are utterly fascinating!
Tried looking up Cynocephalia, now I know why it seemed familiar to me. Cynocephali were the dog headed tribe. Several things were written about them through time. I found out about them researching cryptods a long time ago. Had a crazy experience in the woods with something... really wish the plant was known. Thanks for all your work!
This is simply a hypothesis, but it struck me like a bolt of lightning. In a certain alchemical manuscript, the author briefly discusses a relationship between the dog star Sirius, in the "Canus Major" constellation, and the name given to "Cannabis". He elucidates that the meaning stems from "heaviness", not so much in a sense of literal weight, but in the effect of feeling heavy, or contemplative, the "gravity of a situation" etc. I'm not saying I'm right, and I have strong reverance for gnostic scripture so no disrespect meant here. It would make sense, even ancient Chinese records show Cannabis as being venerated as a sacred medicine.
I appreciate your thorough, unbiased, and clear descriptions of each subject matter you are teaching upon.
I feel I am being taught be a worthy teacher. And feel honored to have been introduced to you, by my son.
Thank you for your service.

Thank you! A burst of laughter towards the end, "you can probably learn to read Coptic" -- yes, you are correct! :)
The work you do is invaluable.
I think you are great, my wish is to see this on mainstream tv. Truly genius and put together well. Thanks for being in this time in this place.

Epic presentation. Thank you. Sharp and cutting edge as always.
That Prada ad blew me away, and to think, all just to sell a bottle of smelly water. Incredible.
I've always liked the ad for some reason - I wonder what the perfume smells like? It would be a great joke if it reeked to remind people that the physical world and its temptations are evil ;)
Fancy Gnostic perfume~
@@TheEsotericaChannel I’m going to associate Ridley Scott’s Prada commercial with the ESOTERICA channel video on Gnosticism now.
Lil' frankincense, myrrh and cynocephalia mixation perhaps 😂
I also heard the "YoYoYo" in my head like the Beastie Boys. This was a really good video. Thank you for sharing this great information!
Up vote for Beastie Boys, RIP Yauch
Thank you professor. I like your style. I've enjoyed every one of your lessons.
I'm not surprised that Ridley Scott made the advert. He directed Blade Runner (Gnostic film), plus Prometheus (arguably Gnostic film) and Alien Covenant (also arguably a Gnostic film). Certain directors are attracted to Gnosticism, either intentionally or unintentionally. Christopher Nolan appears to be (Inception, Memento, Tenet, The Prestige, Doodlebug), so does Darren Aaronovsky (Pi, Mother!, Noah. Requiem for a Dream) and David Lynch (Dune, Twin Peaks, Mulholland Drive). Which also means Denis Villeneuve has got in on it too (Dune. BladeRunner 2049). Even George Lucas can be seen as it (THX 1138) . And it's not surprising that Alejandro Jorodovsky was (El Topo, The Holy Mountain, and his failed attempt at Dune)
Thanks!
Ridley Scott also helped write Raised by Wolves and it’s got a lot of Gnosticism in it. I think there’s 2 seasons (waiting on the 3rd) but it should be on Apple TV or other streaming platforms.
Here I am, listening to this video when I suddenly hear "Prada" and then I have to do a double take because I'm actually doing a little Prada related project while this video is playing!
Bravo to whoever orchestrated this event!!!
Love your channel & the terrific information you share! I also really appreciate your levity... so many scholars are either egomaniacs or overwhelmingly dry in their presentations. I feel neither from you. Thanks for the wealth of knowledge, and for keeping it real! 🤙
Excellent video! It's interesting that the gnostic baptismal exorcism (removing the power of the archons) happens *after* the water and spirit baptism in these texts, when (at least by the early 4th century) the ritual exorcism happened before the water and spirit. Augustine preferred his catechumens to undergo the exorcism several days before the water, and even today most baptism rites place the (admittedly truncated) exorcism early on in the ritual. Also it's worth noting that at least by the late 4th century as attested by both Ephrem and Augustine, it was the norm to encourage people to remain catechumens for most of their lives and reserve baptism for much later in life. Interesting to see the differentiation and parallels between gnostic and proto-orthodox rites! Thank you!
Thanks for this helpful and thoughtful comment - Such an interesting point. One wonders to what degree developments in practice are the result of mutual influence during the early years of the church? Just how liturgical practice is shaped by the varied reality of Christianity at this time -
@@TheEsotericaChannel is it possible that levels of baptism are an allegory for the acceptance of Cephas as the true resurrected Christ? Or maybe the acceptance of a docetism view that Christ was raised in Spirit only. Reading S P Laurie’s rock and tower, where he goes on the theory that Mary, an Enochian Judaism sect, is the shaman of the resurrected Christ.
His theory that Mary was the mother of Jesus, and Cephas, since they were the first to see Christ resurrected. It’s an interesting read.
The post-ritual symbol resembles a mitochondria imo
Thank you so much. I would guess that the last baptism to remove the seal of the archons has a lot to remove the counterfeit spirit and that is the great power of the First mystery. The seal has to be broken in order that the spirit will go to the Height where the Most High determines that spirit to go. Not to go to the Outer Darkness or back into the flesh. So it made sense when the doctor stated the last baptism possibly was done at the end of life on this plane.
Amazing. Thank you so much for your energy, time, and work, sir.
after watching that prada ad... highkey thunder perfect mind now sounds like the script for every fashion ad Lollll
Today I learned that Yaldabaoth isn’t just a final boss in Persona 5 Royal. With so many other angels, demons, and other creatures from various mythologies being represented in the game, I should have suspected this. In Persona 5 Royal, Yaldabaoth is known as the “God of Control” and is a malevolent god made manifest from humanity's distorted desires of sloth. Information like this is just one of the many reasons I come here.
hell yea
Everywhere I go there's some persona 5 mf talkin bout that game
the game maker is supposed to show up at the end of the 7th level:)
You got Abraxas as well 😅 lots of others but yeah this is the most interesting thing ever to me.
Are you talking about a video game? They never interested me but that sounds interesting. The mythology ones like final fantasy....finally brains in the game
I only have one kidney, I have to rely on Esoterica. But I do have Erin Evans book it is a free pdf .Love ❤️ your channel .
One thought might be that the 12 years of following required in the 4th baptism may be related to the 11 years of teaching given to the apostles after the resurrection as seen in pistis Sophia. Those 11 years + the one year seen in the synoptic gospels would add up to 12.
Love the video! I haven't read the books of Jeu yet but am going through the "untitled" text from the Bruce Codex (which itself is a very fascinating text). I do feel the Bruce Codex gets overlooked, thus am quite happy to see this video explore these rituals. Looking forward to other Gnostic related videos you put out.
In greece there is a plant that the flower is like a dog head. One can squish the sides and the dog mouth opens and closes. Well not only in Greece, but... it is tradition to call it doggie.
chill and informative. as my background knowledge grows thanks in large part to you i am better able to understand the higher concepts you discuss and it add immensely to my life
It’s great to supplement my Nag Hammadi reading with your videos. You give a great deal of context.
This is your most interesting so far. Thanks much. Really appreciate this knowledge.
i LOVE your videos. so sober and informative about a topic that is truly wild
I love your hip hop references. Honestly, I don't know if I've ever heard someone explain how the term "yo" originated as a cultural idiom. Maybe it's an obscure survival of gnostic ideas? Big stretch, but I've noticed a lot of weird things like that lately.
I'm exited for more Gnostic stuff!
Me too - certainly on deck!
I have heard the term “baptism by fire” but never knew the origins. Thank you for this insightful presentation.
In the Bible John says, the one coming after me baptized with the Holy spirit and fire.
Dr Sledge, have you considered Kasdalanthos to be some sort of hallucinogenic/psychedelic/disassociative plant? Its interesting that Juniper is used in all the baptisms as it can be used for a range of digestive/intestinal issues. This might help counteract the discomfort one might take after say eating mushrooms or sucking on the leaves of an angel trumpet. And as for the Expelling of the Archons there is a similar tradition of sucking on an orange slice that many claim help calm and return to a more normal state if you will. Love your work sir.
It's PARASITES that are being De-Toxified by juniper and especially anything bitter will work...parasites can cause a person to become enslaved by the parasites. For example: craving sugar is a parasitic signal to the host to eat sugar. Parasites live in sugary environments and lay millions of eggs ... basically parasites take over and the Host becomes exactly that:
HOST
I am watching this video very late at night with a severe lack of sleep. So when some of the fade-edits you put in the video came up I had to rewind and check again to see if it was the video or I started seeing double for a second there.
Luckily for me, it was the video.😅
This is all very mysterious... I will comment on it later...
Hahahahah Love the note about Brill. At an SBL conference years ago, I asked the guy behind the Brill desk about their pricing. Acid-free paper is not necessarily worth an additional 70 dollars. He acknowledged the issue, with a mutual understanding... They're gorgeous books, and God knows they've got the authors; they've got the books, no doubt about it.
Esoterica- consider the following. The book of Jeu is not incomplete. There are 13 paths, Eons. There are 3 baptisms. 13×3=39. The 40th path is the unspoken path. The 14th Eon is a bridge, what isn't said speaks volumes. Pass through water, fire and holy spirit. Then you have arrived.
I love this channel, thank you Dr. Sledge!
Just found you. Fantastic channel thus far!!
Looking forward to your intro to Gnosticism video.
You know I'm pretty torn about it. I tend to agree with Michael Allen Williams that the category itself might be fundamentally problematic. But I think that conversation is super interesting and may do a video about that - "Were there Gnostics"?" Hope you are doing well, brother!

Thank you!
This channel is not good for me, I am at risk of becoming addicted to youtube 😍
your channel is just excellent
Very interesting video, I would love to see a video perhaps explaining some of the items in your intro and shelves in the back.
Firstly, I thoroughly enjoy the content you present. On the subject of the Egyptian Ka, you said it means spirit, or the part of an individual which survives after physical death. I thought that that would be the Ba (often symbolized by a bird), whereas the Ka is the force that energizes said Ba. In my (limited) understanding, the Ka is more akin to the Eastern concept of qi (or chi). It could have something to do with soul and spirit being interchangeable in the modern lexicon, but (by my own estimation), the soul would be the Ba, while the spirit is the Ka...
Thank you.
530 is The nummer 8. Stands for new beginnings ❤

In the fifth volume of the 'Onomatologia botanica completa oder vollständiges botanisches Wörterbuch (etc.)', a German dictionary of plant names from 1773 by Johann Friedrich Gmelin Kynokephalia are translated into German as Flöhsamen/Flohsamen, which is in English Psyllium, which is used e.g. in Metamucil🤔
I would say the Baptisms are about One's Connection with Life/God/TAO. Or Awakening the individual to various levels of the Reality. And the Words are multitude of Layers to One's Awakening.
So just a comment on the wine specifically needing to be obtained from a “pure” person.
That sounds weird to modern ears, but seems imminently logical to an esoterically or spiritually aware mind. Spirits carry spirits. That’s pretty obvious and clear. It’s why some types of ritual religious practices involve the use of even hard alcohol these days, and those practices were passed on from many generations ago.
Apparently, the gnostic church was aware of this and wanted to insure the safety of the baptismal process from being.. inappropriately tinkered with..🍷
Ever read what Rudolf Steiner said about baptism? Did John the Baptist only baptize the experienced initiate's and he baptized Jesus and held him under water until he almost drowned so he can have a near-death experience which would help him remember past lives.
Very interesting!
I love you so much bless you
A great scholarly perspective...very informative....thank you. I wonder if the continued reference to the number "12" (i.e., following under Jesus for 12 years, fullness of life) relates to the zodiac. John Denham Parsons' book published in 1895 and titled "Our Sun-God, Or, Christianity Before Christ" , discusses the repetition of the number "12" in the bible (i.e., 12 tribes of Israel, 12 disciples, 12 stars on the crown of the lady of revelations, etc.) I think the ultimate way to diffuse the power of the archons is to project love onto them...it confuses them and takes the fight out of them.
You got it. It’s an astrological number across almost all cultures in the eastern Mediterranean and near East. The idea the at the 12 disciples are such because of the 12 tribes is a narrow view - both are because of the astrological significance. Christ is meant to be a sun (source of light, thereby seeing, thereby gnosis), I think.
@@LordJagd The 14th Generation and even above generations beyond the 13 Kings in Gnostic Christian groups are more prevalent than 12 divisions (as Jesus originally have 13 apostles and Tribe of Judah used to have 13th until it's discounted due to the 13th being adopted sons from Joseph), Apocalypse of Adam to Gospel of Judas and Books of Jeu are proof of these
The Judaism and Christian frameworks are either "failures" or at least Transitory for the coming of the "Generation without Kings" with the upcoming of Islam, unfortunately there are prophecies of Islam within sayings of Prophet Muhammad being splintered into 73 sects and 72 will be condemned except of the Chosen Secret Elects out of 72 which united into the saved 73rd Sect at the day of Resurrection
verdadero mucho gracias
Insightful video as usual!
Much appreciated!
Could you do a book review on The Immortality Key by Brian Murarescu which goes into detail on the significance of the wine. Your interpretation that it is an end of life ritual is very much aligned with The Immortality Key being about the ancient practice of ‘dying before you die’.

Ridley Scott also made Bladerunner, written by Philp K Dick, who wrote science fiction regarding Gnostics (VALIS). Scott's interest in Gnosticism may trace through his reading of Dick.
I know you probably won’t see this, Dr. Sledge, but it’s about the Cynocephalia being placed in the mouth. That makes me think of St. Christopher, honestly, and now I’m wondering if he was a Gnostic Convert to Apostolic Christianity, because he was referred to as a cynocephalic!
Now that makes more sense to me, based on the circumstances surrounding the disagreements between the two types of folks practicing their faiths generally under Jesus/IosouV and Simon Magus. It also seems that there’s been a return towards the Median over the last 500 years or so, with the expansion of the world knowledge base bringing the similarities and the differences between the Heads & Tails of the Same Spiritual Coin into sharper relief.
A few scattered thoughts, Dr. Sledge:
--Is there any relationship, besides the shared divine name, between the Books of Jeu and the Stele of Jeu in the PGM, better known as the Bornless Rite/Headless Rite of Crowley et al.?
--A crazy thought on the kynokephalos plant: could it be what Homer called "moly"? The reason I ask is not only because of its purported usage in the Odyssey, but also its connection with Hermes there, and the fact that Hermanubis and a cynocephalic Hermes would have been known at this point (and well into later periods), and thus referring to it in a kind of code might be appropriate here, in a context where acknowledging a Gentile deity would be taken as problematic...maybe?
Thank you for uploading, I enjoyed this video very much. Out of curiosity, do you have any plans to do a video on the Reshit Jojmá any time in the future?

Has anyone compared these texts to the Egyptian Book of the Dead or the Coffin texts or even the Pyramid texts? I ask because there's a lot here that seems similar to the journey through afterlife to get to the Field of Reeds of Ancient Egyptian Belief. I wonder about that myself including the Tibetan Book of the Dead.
The twelve and the twenty-one each relate to Iesus aka Buddha aka Mercury's threefold nature, as represented by Apollo, hence 33 aka (3) and 12 | 21 (3).
121 = 11 X 11
"Ka" 21 aka spirit, bear in mind this is subject to a spectrum, in essence 2 through 9.
