I think the greatest strength of the Hawkeye run is how honest and purely sincere it is. The fact that Clint Barton is just essentially a run of the mill, clumsy normal guy who happens to have training as a superhero and a bunch of arrows really highlights the human in him, the comic issues show that unlike most superheroes Clint Barton makes arrogant and selfish decisions (Highlighted by how every issue starts out with, “Okay, I know this looks bad- CRASH!”) and how the series just journeys through all of those mistakes along with his relationship to Kate Bishop is phenomenal and makes this essentially in the top five best Marvel comic runs from the last decade and for me the one I would use to exemplify Marvel’s creative potential going forward.

I found Fraction's Hawkeye run 6 years ago as an idiot teen and it changed comics for me! I was just sharing my copies with my family when you guys uploaded this. Thanks for covering it :)
I've always seen the MCU versions of the Avengers as hybrids of the standard comic versions and the characters we saw in Mark Millar's 'The Ultimates'. I mean, Samuel L Jackson's Nick Fury is 100% Ultimate Fury, and there have been plenty of things in the movies which are clearly from those comics - throwing Bruce Banner out of a helicopter to make him transform, for instance, or movie Captain America's uniform, which is very much 'Ultimate' Cap (but minus that version's less savoury character traits). So Ultimate Hawkeye, as I recall, was simply a very skilled assassin, a black-ops sniper who was an amazing shot with whatever weapon came to hand. That's how I've always seen MCU Clint: a SHIELD field agent who got roped in to fill out the ranks of the Avengers, much like Black Widow. He likes the bow because it's stealthy (and because of the trick arrows). I mean, I can't imagine Nick Fury sending a guy who's basically just a circus trick-shot to bring in a Soviet-trained assassin like Natasha.
@Snehil Shrey Heartiy disagree there. I love the first two volumes of The Ultimates - really interesting take on those characters. But then they handed volume three to Jeph Loeb, and that was compete garbage.
Don't forget, Ultimate Clint had a family just like the MCU version would go on to have. I'm pretty sure Whedon has been known to be a fan of the Ultimates so it makes sense to me.
I feel like the MCU will sometimes use the looks of the ultimate versions of the characters but very little of the backstory. They probably looked at multiple costumes the character had worn over the years for inspiration... and the ultimate universe had already modernized many of the classic designs.

In addition to what's been said above, Bullseye actually *was* Hawkeye for a couple years during the Dark Reign storyline. (Tl;dr for Dark Reign: The world's upside down, bad guys are installed as the official government-sponsored Avengers while the real Avengers become outlaws, and each of the villains adopts the superhero alias of an actual Avenger - the Scorpion gets to be Spider-Man, and the Green Goblin becomes a cross of Captain America and Iron Man, which is the origin of Iron Patriot.) The two Hawkeye story been one of my favorite run and I feel like I’m in the minority of getting so much joy that the MCU Hawkeye series is basing off the comic. I mean, look, they adapted bridge scene from the comics to the show! Clint outside being an Avenger and teaming up with Kate was the reason why I started to really enjoy Hawkeye. I even like Clint’s simple tee, sneakers, sunglasses, and cuts. My older brother grew up in the 90s so he was more into the classic superhero suit, so even then, I felt I’m in the minority. TH-camrs I casually watch are hating on the series the series is more about Kate and not Clint or as they put it, “A Hawkeye story not focusing on Hawkeye,” using the same issues with Rey from Star Wars and the 13th Doctor from Doctor Who. Even the comments are bringing up that Disney is trying to make the “Mary Sues are replacing male Superheroes.” I wonder how will they react that Kate is actually a Hawkeye as well? I won’t be surprise if some of them were the ones who never realize She-Hulk existed before and were tweeting that Hulk is gonna be replaced.
In the comics he is interesting and you care about the character .in the MCU he isn't interested and if he died in any of movies he been in no one would really care.
Ironically, Matt Fraction/Greg Land collaboration is one of my favorites X-men phases... I know it's not a popular opinion, but Land's photo-realism and Fraction "one day in the life of...." style of stories worked pretty well for a while, I would very much like to see adapted in future MCU X-men series.
Does it bother anyone else that when they were talking about the art the video kept using Javier Pulido's far inferior art rather David Aja's award winning work or is that just me?
I paused mid way thru and finished the book which I had started Thanksgiving day, right as the first two episodes of the show dropped I believe, and yeah it was really good. I'll probably get the omnibus if I get the opportunity because I'll just want to read the whole run.
2:04 yeah, he would have to somehow make the arrow go in the correct way but doesn't fit then go in the wrong way still doesn't fit and then go back in the correct way again, because thats how we all do it
Is it just me or did anyone else watch these guys before the Hawkeye show and would constantly hear them call it my life as a weapon but a bunch of other American channels just call it Hawkeye. Is it like an Australian thing because searching up “Matt fraction Hawkeye” just brings up Hawkeye
That's so odd. On the Marvel Unlimited app it's listed as My Life As a Weapon, but it appears so be exactly the same just the other versions have a blank space under the title with no subtitle. No mention of it being called My Life As a Weapon on the wiki either so I guess it seems to be unique to Australia at least. No clue why.
That's because "Hawkeye Vol. 1: My Life As A Weapon" is the name of the trade paperback, which collects the first 5 issues of the Fraction/Aja comics run. Vol. 2 is called "Little Hits" and Vol. 3 is "L.A Woman", and finally Vol. 4 "Rio Bravo". Some people might colloquially refer to the entire run as 'My Life As A Weapon' to specify that they're talking about the Fraction/Aja (et al.) Hawkguy comics - I myself sometimes do ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯
I would pay quite a bit to see this comic series actually animated it's the only series I've actively read multiple times it's my favorite comic period. Which the show is ok it doesn't hold a candle to this comic.
I never understood how so many people love green arrow and not Hawkeye. Both are a favorite of mine but despite their different personalities, they’re practically the same but not many people point out the same flaws in green arrow
"why use arrows instead of bullets?" Like with Gambit and Green Arrow, it's all about the style. Trick arrows are much more creative that simple bullets. It takes a special kind of someone to only use arrows in firefights.
I think that photo referenced image was Salvador Larroca, not Greg Land. That whole Iron Man run is good and the art didn't feel traced to me, but when Larroca did Star Wars, that was a MASSIVE problem becasue I could tell which exact frame from the movies he traced over every time.
But i think that Greg Land was the one who was actually taking references from porn to draw women, so you see his drawings most women characters seem to be in middle of an orgasm xD
The mcu hawkeye is based on the ultimate universe hawkeye (who is just not a fun guy), which is why the tv show can't adapt this comic book in a way that it deserves.
Exactly, I'm gutted that we're getting the adaptation I've always wanted- but with a Hawkeye I am indifferent to at best. I'd rather this was animated and we had a live action Katie Kate spin off.

Yeah that was a weird slip up on the editor's end.
yeah that was really iffy
It really got on my tits. David Aja's style is very distinctive and I'd have thought difficult to mix up.
Volume 2 is $90 on Amazon right now, so guess I’ll wait then
I paused mid way thru and finished the book which I had started Thanksgiving day, right as the first two episodes of the show dropped I believe, and yeah it was really good. I'll probably get the omnibus if I get the opportunity because I'll just want to read the whole run.
Ah, Greg Land. **shudder** thanks for reminding me of that artwork.
It was an interesting time.
This makes me think Wes Anderson shouldve made a hawkeye movie based on this series
2:04 yeah, he would have to somehow make the arrow go in the correct way but doesn't fit then go in the wrong way still doesn't fit and then go back in the correct way again, because thats how we all do it
Great video 👍
I was hoping the show would have the costume from the classics with the mask. I wanted to hear Clint say. I would never wear anything like that.
Ohhhh, I missed these comics' narrations
@@whatswiththisnewhandlesthing I like the my life as a weapon subtitle, reminds you it’s more personal than just
HAWKEYE
@@whatswiththisnewhandlesthing UK has the subtitle too as far as I'm aware. Hang on- I got my copy from New York. Now I'm confused 😆
The end of this had me thinking of the “your mother’s a tracer!” Scene from mallrats
Is there a secret place on Big Sandwich that has videos? 'cause the videos are really fun, and I want them. 😁
Best run of the decade, in my opinion.
I would pay quite a bit to see this comic series actually animated it's the only series I've actively read multiple times it's my favorite comic period. Which the show is ok it doesn't hold a candle to this comic.
watching this makes me wanna check the comics out
My favorite Australians talking about my favorite comic book? Sign me UPPPPPP
Indeed, and that affirmation is only partly by default
I never understood how so many people love green arrow and not Hawkeye. Both are a favorite of mine but despite their different personalities, they’re practically the same but not many people point out the same flaws in green arrow
Im guessing the boomerang arrow is gonna be the one that takes out the villain in the end since they just mentioned it in episode 4
"why use arrows instead of bullets?"
Like with Gambit and Green Arrow, it's all about the style. Trick arrows are much more creative that simple bullets. It takes a special kind of someone to only use arrows in firefights.
boxing glove arrow!
@@adhirg I wish that stayed for the Arrow show and not just a cameo in season 1
Do glad to see all the Hawkeye love & appreciation in these comments😆🙌
I think that photo referenced image was Salvador Larroca, not Greg Land. That whole Iron Man run is good and the art didn't feel traced to me, but when Larroca did Star Wars, that was a MASSIVE problem becasue I could tell which exact frame from the movies he traced over every time.
But i think that Greg Land was the one who was actually taking references from porn to draw women, so you see his drawings most women characters seem to be in middle of an orgasm xD
So glad someone else noticed this.
I don't even watch Hawkeye (couldn't care less) but I still watch these videos.
“Dumb trick arrows.” If it’s “dumb” and it works, it’s not dumb.
I was wondering if you'd throw this ep on the main channel.
Mr Gerald the goat approves of this TH-cam video
Okay theirs a show about it now it’s everyone’s favourite comic lol
i honestly can't imagine not having a big sandwich
Do you think Barney Barton will appear in the mcu or any of Clint’s origin?
Anything can be a snack if you look at it right
MCU Hawkeye is better written than most MCU characters. Like Black Widow and Hulk
Was the audio recorded before the start of the tv show?
Yup
I love comics. if the people behind this channel ever wanted to make more videos about comics than movies I'd be content.
But what about the Ironman adventures episode where Hawkeye kills Ironman2099?

Hawkeye must love usb c lol
I read it but don’t remember anything about it except that I enjoyed it
CLINT can be distracting when in CAPS
How many likes until you release the full episode on TH-cam? I think six thousand seems fair.
Hawkeye: or the poor man’s Green Arrow.
Is the mic really far away
