Wes decides to jump into a table with an android with a cybernetic brain, an empath with psychic abilities, a tactical genius and a dude with X-RAY VISION. All of whom regularly sharpen their skills against each other. Not sure what he was expecting.
"I cannot answer that, Wesley, and as you are a newcomer to the game, may I say, it is inappropriate for you to ask." That's "Data" for "Shutup, Wesley!"
I've always liked Data's delivery of "Commander Riker may be bluffing, Wesley," especially with how it hearkens back to Data's first game, where Data was astonished that Riker bluffed and won.
Wesley is the next hawking Data is a supercomputer Troi can read your emotions Laforge can see through your cards and riker is just plain bad ass at poker.
Nowadays they'd film this scene playing Texas hold 'em. It would be on the holodeck, with a vitual Phil Hellmuth making a bad bet & getting burned, then throwing a tantrum.
Data says Wesley asking him what he has is inappropriate(but not against the rules), then Data tells Wesley after Riker's raise and Data folds that Riker could be bluffing(AGAINST THE RULES, one player to a hand). That is way way more inappropriate and Data is being a hypocrite.
Right, it was an entire hand on inappropriate talk! I'm glad that they had Riker shoot the look towards Geordi and Data because they need to STFU when they're not in the hand.
Don't forget Riker making a string bet! Would have been ruled a call ("I'll see your 10") and not allowed a second action ("and 100 more") in any regulated poker room.
It's a nuance thing. That's why Data says not to banter... until he knows how the other players will take it. When in a new environment observe and see where you fit in. Data and Geordie are veterans of the poker table. It is not inappropriate to try and educate the noob, and especially as officers to educate the ensign.
I question whether or not Crusher is really a genius. Folding trip jacks on five card stud!? A straight flush in a five card game, the probability of that is .00015%, and if Crusher is really a boy genius he would’ve known that.
0:38 Riker calls and raises in separate motions, known as a string raise. Data and Shelby would have both noticed this. Shelby would point it out to everyone except maybe Admiral Hanson. Data would point out, however, that this scene was filmed in the twentieth century. People take their poker more seriously in the twenty-first century. Data says it's inappropriate to ask what his opponent's hand is. It's also inappropriate to tell people your hand if you haven't called. Shelby announces her hand at 1:11 just before calling. If a clone of Shelby was at the table, her clone would have called her out on it. Again, this was filmed and directed without strict casino rules being followed. The main character of the episode was Riker and it was still a great scene to see him one-upped by his talented, ostentatious, brilliant and annoying "replacement".
Troi is probably the worst empath you'll ever meet. If she were to meet The Hulk, she'd probably say: 'I think he's a bit upset. I sense residual feelings of anger.' She may as well not have empathic abilities, because they sure as hell never do anything usefull on the show.
+Xylarxcode i wish they made her empathic abilities just a tad bit more precise like being able to detect simple, general thoughts like, ''I sense he has a strong desire to complete a certain task..''
She originally had full-blown telepathic powers in the first season of the show. It was because of this that the character wasn't featured very prominently until Season 2. Writers didn't know how to work a telepathic character into a story. Deanna Troi was likely to be written out of the series if it weren't for the departure of Denise Crosby and Gates McFadden.
@MajikkaniHand I've never had it explained at all, so you probably know more than me. All I know is one minute they seem to want snake eyes, then the next its crapping out.
So no one has pointed out that on the end, Wesley bet 10 with 3 jacks, and Shelby called with 2 pair. No more cards are to be dealt. She can't win. Unless she's expecting Riker to bluff raise
Andy Bruinewoud yes he did, but Wes bets showing 3 jacks, and Shelby calls the bet with only 2 pair. All cards have been dealt. We can't assume she's that advanced a poker player to anticipate Riker raising.
Oh, I see what you're saying. It actually is possible though, anticipating that Riker is going to bluff and bet enough to scare off the rookie who you know beats your hand, but you're confident you're beating Riker's. It's very high-level thinking if that's the case, which actually does fit her character.
@66richardson So when Ryker has a possible straight flush that means all his numbers were in order & he had all red hearts, But the black 2 messed it up.(if u don't have all 5 matching in a straight or a flush you have nothing) Not all cards are dealed up to see, so a player can bluff. U can fake & make ppl think U're winning by betting more when you have nothing. So everyone has to chose to either fold which is giving up & lose what u already bet or u can call which is paying xtra to play on.
@Miracle490d There's some sort of cycle that the game follows, I think, where there's a main game, but crapping out ends it, and what you want depends on what you bet I guess. I may, in fact, be totally wrong.
@66richardson ...It's craps I don't understand when they show that on TV. why is a number good sometimes but bad other times? Is there some kind of order or are they trying to total something?
hey there. i know that im a *tad* late. but the way craps works is. -roll the dice. if its a 7 or 11, you win. -if its not a 7 or 11, reroll. -keep rolling until you either get a repeat of your first roll, or you roll a 7 or 11. -if you managed to repeat your first roll, you win. if you got the 7/11 first, you lose. as far as betting goes there are several ways to bet. so winning or losing or winning in the wrong way could all be good or bad depending on how the bet was placed.
@66richardson Duece is just the number 2. so dueces wild just means any 2 cards can be what you want. Buying cards??? I don't know that one. I've never played poker at the tables in vegas, so I don't even know how they do it. Just machines and friendly home games as a kid, and we just kept all our cards hidden.
i never understood the point to these games. the crew is constantly bragging about how theyre SO advanced that money is no longer a thing. so no one is paid, no one pays for anything.....so what do the chips represent? betting when theres no risk isnt betting
@66richardson I've known it since I was a kid. Poker is easy. Everyone gets 5 cards. 3 of a kind is 3 of any same number or picture character like a Jack. There are only 4 of each in a deck so you have all but one. So 4 of a kind is about the best beating almost everything. a pair is only two of a kind. A full house is a pair and 3 of a kind. A straight is counting up like if you have a 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5. With any numbers if they stay in order. A flush is all the same symbol and color; ex.red
@bandet888 yeah if you're NEVER supposed to lay down 3 exposed jacks clearly riker should never bluff and you'd just get owned every time you had 3 jacks.
"now it's time for the long pants..." Riker's such and idiot! :D funny as hell though Plus they have NOTHING to lose if they bet it all anyway! (currency elimination in the 24th century)
There are countless examples of her not abusing her abilities throughout the series. One can just as easily assume she wouldn't use her abilities based on those same writers. I'd say it's more likely.
Wes decides to jump into a table with an android with a cybernetic brain, an empath with psychic abilities, a tactical genius and a dude with X-RAY VISION. All of whom regularly sharpen their skills against each other. Not sure what he was expecting.
Riker? I'm sure he's tactically skilled but genius?

No, Wesley folded after Riker's raise. His hand is dead at that point. Shelby called the 100 raise, and she had the better of the two live hands.
