It's a nuanced conversation but when having it, you have to be honest to the point that some might be offended. No one is saying Black Brits can't play a Black American, what happens when that is done is a narrative is being spun that Black British actors are better than Black American because they're classically trained and have done theatre. Some Black Brits are actually playing into that narrative that they're better actors by saying they don't have the "baggage" that Black American actors have when they play certain roles. That's the real issue and Black American actors then have to fight a stereotype they didn't create based on place of birth. There's plenty of Black American actors that are classically trained and have done theatre which invalidates the whole argument but it also weakens the stance that Black American creatives have always had to fight for space in the entertainment industry. Black Brits, Canadians or whoever don't have the abundance of opportunities in there own countries, so they come to the US for better opportunities that had to be fought for by those before them. There was a time in the US that those opportunities were not as abundant as they are now, which goes back to why there's a nuanced conversation that needs to be had about this very subject.

There’s no need to ask a non black American about portraying black American roles !! All there going to do is dance around the topic & say how we’re all black! Not realizing that they come to black America ancestral land. That we built and fight with us over our currently limited resources/opportunities instead of staying in there countries and fighting for themselves

Well..he answered his own question...he just said its a limit on who is selected. Which is why American actors may have reservations about it since they don't generally get casted for non American role.

He was amazing on Homecoming !!!! This conversation was so interesting and thank you for not being a part of this stupid debate about black actors from other countries who are not supposed to play african american roles. Keep shining 👏

That was a very educated conversation...all the topics..we need to have more of those. And I thank both parties for uplifting each others. I really enjoyed!

The problem with the way the issue was discussed was the dismissal. Also wypipo do it too is never a good equivocation.

Homecoming was really good! He was excellent in it!!! But is the movie industry in Canada and England that bad? Are they not hiring none of yall? Can you not thrive there? It honestly does feel like a secret invasion.

Maybe it is that "bad", but even if it isn't I don't believe in limitations, even for American actors. Denzel crossed borders to play Biko. Chadwick crossed borders to play a fictitious South African character. A limited actor doesn't grow.

I feel as though the stories these actors find themselves in still don't portray us the way we'd choose to be portrayed, in most cases. I like some of the roles, but I want to see more collective Black casts. That's not to be exclusionary, it's just necessary for there to be authentic reflections of our culture. On the other hand, when we do show our culture in films, it can seem too stereotypical or heavy-handed. We need more Atlanta and Insecure. I think it all comes down to pairing competent and visionary writers with reliable producers.

White foreign actors take American roles ALL THE TIME. EXAMPLES: SPIDERMAN IS PLAYED BY A BRIT (tom holland). Hugh jackman, Margot robbie, kate Winslet, tom hardy, all not american, yet all put on white American accents to play WHITE AMERICANS and theres MANY MORE. STOP MAKING THIS AN ONLY BLACK THING.

The movie industry is run and dominated by white men. They can get projects green lit everyday. We don't know how white American actors feel about the foreigners getting good roles. They're not very vocal about it as we are. Also why should a white actor actress be threatened by foreign actors when the work for them is in abundance. There's not abundance of work or roles for black actors or actresses.

@@Kimberlyncovington do what tyler perry did, work hard, save money, build your own studio and provide work to your people. or stfu. complaining is a lazy excuse to not work.

@@JusdoinstuF Why did Tyler Perry had to work so hard? Lack of black, generational wealth. Major studios that were created back in the day like MGM and FOX were created by white folks with white generational wealth. I suggest you do your homework on them.
