This adapts a bit of writing I put in the yt 'Vinyl Community' because it mentions Jake Thackray & John Lennon, but since it's about British character, here goes:
"I love a good bum on a woman, it makes my day.
To me it is palpable proof of God's existence, a
    posteriori."
[ *Jake Thackray, 'On Again! On Again!* ']
He was a Leeds comedic singer-songwriter/poet, nationally known on TV & the club circuit & at EMI Abbey Rd Studios from the '60s.
"I like your gear, man" - - Lennon to Thackray, EMI Abbey Rd, 1967.
Paul McCartney said John Lennon knew Jake's song 'The Statues' off by heart in India, & 'Happiness Is a Warm Gun' was influenced by Jake's odd classical guitar style (as 'Julia' adapted Donovan's finger-picking).
That JL was a fan of Jake Thackray is revealing of Lennon &, too, of what used to be, since at least the time of Dickens, part of British national character. And without understanding this, people - - even Britain's own new millennials - - cannot comprehend British national character in the 20th century. It's why *Neil Innes* prospered here. It's the reason Lennon was keen to support *Ivor Cutler* & *Stanley Unwin* & dates back to JL's schooling on *Lewis Carroll* & *Edward Lear* & on the radio *Spike Milligan* & it's this: *Eccentricity* .
It's the national endorsement of misfits that made a celebrity of scientist/ tutor *Magnus Pike* in the '70s-80s - - he's the fellow who Thomas Dolby got to speak into the mic, "She blinded me - - with SCIENCE!"
It's what made *Ealing Studios* Ealing Studios. It made *Miss Marple* Miss Marple & *Margaret Rutherford* Margaret Rutherford & *Alastair Sim* Alastair Sim. It's why *The Avengers* TV spy series featured a different wildly eccentric character every week through the mid-60s. It gave eccentric lead *Patrick McGoohan* a chance to develop some very odd acting choices.
It's what made *George Harrison* re-mortgage his house to fund a *Monty Python* film - - it made Harrison live in Friar Park in the 1st place - - it's what made Harrison write 'Crackerbox Palace' - - & what made Harrison give *The Rutles* the green light that got it past the other Beatles.
This doesn’t idealise Britain. *Quentin Crisp* , overtly effeminate yet stoic and spartan, suffered persecution here until the Sixties liberated the streets. Still unrecognised for the gifted writer he was, his uniqueness is seen as performative even just in conversation. Like Lennon, in the end Quentin Crisp felt happier in New York. But his eccentricity was quintessentially English.
Paradoxically non-conformists were part of Britain’s national character - - like an individual manifestation of an island.
Bucking the rules was strangely a nationalistic prerogative.
Not that everyone was eccentric but that eccentricity was a valid deviation worth preserving like Grade II listed buildings. Not ostracised or pathologised or dragooned into compliance, but assimilated *on their own terms* .
I don't think it's possible to understand the UK without understanding this.
John Lennon, like Jake Thackray, was a British eccentric, & though JL preferred America in his thirties, his highly idiosyncratic potential could not have developed there as a kid. Even without the 'Winston' bit, Lennon's was a particular British character, as was his mother Julia's, as was Jake's.
So, friends & neighbours, when commenters (& soon, historians) do a national inventory on what's been lost in this country, on what's been globalised into submission, factor that in the deficit column - - & the cultural legacy that came with it, now 'archived' rather than handed down to the next generation. There's no eccentric apprenticeship anymore. Eccentricity is suspect & anti-social from here to Dover now.

There's an extremely important distinction between legislation and law, one that many seem to either ignore or mislead over. This is potentially the key starting point for taking back power from what is actually little more than Tesco or other corporation, a point that they make great efforts to hide. Be very wary of those who mention government legislation, and law in the same sentence or context for they are a part of the problem.

Simon, as always an uplifting message. You say we can't buy all the land - but we actually could. Given that there are about 63 Million English people, committing to donate £1.00 every week is £63 Million pounds a week, every week. None of us would miss £4 a month, - but just think about how much land we could buy. With concerted effort we could get our country back in no time at all. There are vast derelict estates with hundreds of acres of land available that could be bought and utilized. So why not set up a standing order facility so we can all contribute to speed up the process. Or provide us with an account and sort code we can drop money into every week so we can speed up the process? ❤🙏🇬🇧

Completely agree. When it comes to the law, they can mess with you in the short term. But if you are in the right then you will win in the end. Case in point, youtubers were arrested by the met at the Downing Street protest after Southport just for being there. They were held for a few hours before being let go because the coppers had nothing to charge them with. One was DJE media, he said he's put in some kind of complaint against the met for wrongful arrest. People are being railroaded by the legal system over the riots. Some have previous with the law so doing more time inside probably isn't a huge deal to them. But others likely don't have the knowledge or means to fight it and have been intimidated into pleading guilty. The Lucy Connolly case in Northampton will be interesting, looks like she is fighting. Has not entered a plea, being held in custody and next in court in September. All over a facebook post, that while ill-advised did not threaten violence to any specific person in any specific location.

I send my congratulations to all of those who were allowed to be part of the project. I had hoped that it would inspire other groups to form and become communities of like mind. Alas it wasn't to be. However, for the rest of us who were excluded from the initiate, there is still hope because much land will become available as the governments terminate large swathes of the population in the coming years. We will, I believe, be able to take the land vacated in the coming tribulation and without any monatary costs or petty restrictions placed upon us. During that time, I will help those that I can, for as long as I survive in this present system of things. Should I expire during this time, I'm confident that I will be resurrected to use the knowledge that I now possess, to help others prepare for life in the new system of things. Either way I cannot lose since I accepted the personal invitation to be a follower of the Christ all those years ago.

    Wise words, woody.
But I have a question for you? How did you set up your woodlander initiative in terms of paying? Is there annual obligation to pay, because my bank got me shorter of 10 pounds for your initiave a couple of days ago. Frankly, I don't regret 10 pounds, but I thought people voluntarily support it in monetary funds.

And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If...if...We didn't love freedom enough. And even more - we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.

Enough with New-York, Paris area and harassing jobs. Sydney Australia was fine (at that time) but horrific since 2020. I wish you all the best where you live and cross my fingers for your family and cross my fingers for my son and I. Maybe will have to move to Russia although we don't speak russian!
