THANK YOU! Finally a real world EDC video. The whole EDC thing has gotten totally ridiculous with people carrying enough gear to have limped the Titanic into Boston harbor! In the urban/suburban environment that most of us lichen, how much do we really need? Ratchets and drive handle??? The now trendy Knipex pliers???? No, just a SAK, a phone, and a wallet will do most of us through our day.
Ha ha! Yeah, all this fancy gear can be very appealing but just not needed is it in the real world day to day. Different needs in different scenarios for sure, but not for just general urban living imho 👍✌️
There is a US TH-cam video with a large chap showing off his EDC... He had a pistol + spare magazines, backup pistol + spare magazines, two knives, two torches, first aid trauma kit, tourniquet, medicines etc. I thought it was a parody, turned out it wasn't.
Wise words! It’s taken me YEARS to realise I don’t need to lug pocketfuls of shit around for on the off-chance or ‘just in case’ - not in a normal everyday urban day to day setting anyway 🤷♂️👍
Thank you so much! Don’t get me wrong - I have tons of ‘edc gear’ and if I’m going out of town, or into the countryside, or going to do a more specific activity, etc., etc. I’ll take more or different items, but, honestly, after years of using all this stuff the things in my video are enough. I’ sure I would regret that decision if I’m out and about and the zombie apocalypse comes… lol but apart from that I’m good to go with the above stuff on a day-to-day basis 👍👍👍
I used to carry all sorts of bits and pieces which I told myself I absolutely needed, but much like you I'm down to just a couple of items which I keep in a very small pouch (and that's only because I don't want them loose in my pocket). The only thing I would add, and this is useful for anyone, is ICE ( In Case of Emergency) information. I have a credit card sized NFC tag with all my medical info, emergency contact details etc as a PDF document, but printed on it is just enough for the emergency services to know who I am, basic medical info like blood type and allergies, and next of kin.
An actual real edc how refreshing 😉 Zac in the Wild’s mantra “carry what you need, need what you carry” think that’s it. I always wear a watch, always have done feels too weird with one 🤷🏼♂️ nothing fancy - Casio W 202-1 AVEF. Much better backlight than the other Uber basic casio
Yep, I've got drawers full of EDC stuff bought over the years. What I carry every day now is a Swiss Army Champ (from 20 years ago - thinner than today's Champ, taken apart and reassembled with my favourite tools) with Rovyvon A8 strapped to its case. Sits horizontally on the front of my belt so it automatically goes with me whenever I put my jeans on (most used tools are the magnifying glass and scissors). Finally an ancient Niteize pouch with Maglight AA converted to LED coupled with a Leatherman Bond (can opener removed, scissors from the Fuse inserted). That's it.
I love my SwissChamp - only recently finally got one after years n years of thinking it would be too big - & it’s really not too big is it! Struggling to find a good low profile horizontal carry belt clip for it though. The Rovyvon is such a great little torch - use mine multiple time a day! How do you like the Bond? I never got one as the tools are all inside the handles: I absolutely LOVE the juice line and really wish they didn’t finish production of that - Juice S2 is one of my favourites! 👍
I have done exactly the same as you, pal. I think it’s as much of a right of passage than anything else. 😂 Carried all sorts of weird and wonderful things in my pockets thinking I might need them one day but like yourself a small pen knife handy for all sorts, small torch, bit of cash and cards is all I ever really need. A great video mate 👍
I have a tiny folding scalpel blade knife, small folding glasses just for reading, a mini biro and ear buds if needed, carried in a small ultralight wallet.
I do like having a small set of pliers on me, so carry a Leatherman Style PS or a Victorinox with pliers. I've never been in a situation where I needed a "proper" set of pliers and not brought a tool kit with me. I appreciate the realistic expectations of your EDC.
Finally someone that has an actual real EDC! And even the pocket knife is 50/50 depending on situation. For me in addition it includes pocket tissues(allergies), painkillers(headaches), chewing gum and reusable foldable tote grocery bag. ( These items go onto a small carry bag)
Thank you for commenting! I do usually carry extra stuff if I’m going further afield or taking a bag - the things you mention are undoubtedly very wise choices!! 👍👍
Victorinox Compact and a Victorinox Jetsetter. That is pretty much everything I need as an EDC along with my wallet and phone. In the winter I will carry a head torch along with the above. I also have a Victorinox Pioneer X that I can swap in to replace the Compact.
I've got an EDC type toolkit in my work bag. Knipex, Wera Tool Check, etc. No way I'd be sticking that in my pockets. I work in a school so I can't have a knife on me at work. Outside of work it's either a little SAK (used to unlock our daughter from a toilet she locked herself in TWICE in a row the day after I got it) or a little pouch with a knife, little next tool multitool, lighter and a torch, depending on pocket space. Oh, and chewing gum and tissues (hay fever 50% of the year, cold the other 50%). I got excited when I saw the Lincs Inspire locker token.
Thank you for the comments! The ONLY time I don’t carry a pocket knife if is I’m in my kids’ school or on an aeroplane - feel a bit naked without one though. And I agree - I do have some little kits with a few other bits in if I’m taking a bag anywhere with me or going further afield, just not if I’m just mooching around close to home. Are you also a Lincolnshire Yellowbelly yourself then? 😃👍
I carry similar to you, but I have a small pouch which I keep cash, cards, the Rovyvon torch, a Fisher Space Pen (nice and compact, but full size when in use) and a Swiss army card, which has all the tooling I need day-to-day. I have another pouch with sections for the driver set and Knipex you showed, a notepad, and Sharpie, in case I'm going somewhere which I may need to tweak something. The pouch helps keep it all together in case I change trousers. My home key and trolley token are in the pouch (we have a smart lock), whereas the car key is separate with its own RF protected pouch.
I have a little leatherman squirt, I carry a Gerber Prybrid in my bag and Bibury Surge clone and kershaw barge for work. Wallet, keys, little fexix light.
I always carry a pen and notepad, probably because I’m forgetful 😂. Even though I could use the notes on my phone, same with wearing a watch. I just like having something that’s there when I need it and not vying for my attention. Plus it doesn’t run out of battery halfway through the day😂. Great video!
I do sometimes carry a notepad and very very often a pen (but not as an essential item so not always), but usually end up with a jumbled mess of notes! There’s normally a pen on my Swiss army knives as an emergency back up. A watch is just something I’ve always worn and I always will. I need to know the time at work multiple times a day so much better having a watch than using my phone, & I just generally like watches too! Thank you for the comments! 👍
My actually useful basic EDC is a Leatherman Rebar combined with either a Climber + Wenger/Executive 81 or an Evo 14 and either a Buck 110 or Fällkniven PC for a more solid locking blade than the Leatherman has to offer. That way I have all the everyday tools I need. When out in the countryside my Fällkniven F1 or A1 goes along too. I am in Germany though where I can EDC my F1 around town legally but the law has recently been changed and is now a little unclear for certain situations so I don't bother carrying it anymore. And yes I do regularly have tasks where this stuff actually proves useful. Bare minimum would be a Waiter and Jetsetter/Classic/Executive 81/Ambassador around town.
I’ve spent the last year going down the EDC rabbit hole and then dialling it all back in. Got the Knipex XS, got the 711L ratchet, got all the other stuff that was deemed ‘essential’. Now I’m down to a Jetsetter, TAU, i3e eos, Nanobag and some generic bits and bobs (tissues, tablets etc.) I still have the Knipex, 711L, bits and sockets in a chums wallet but that only comes out when I know I’ll be using it.
Thank you for the excellent comments! Don’t get me wrong - like you, I have tons of ‘edc gear’ and if I’m going out of town, or into the countryside, or going to do a more specific activity, etc., etc. I’ll take more or different items, but, honestly, after years of using all that stuff the things in my video are enough. I’ sure I would regret that decision if I’m out and about and the zombie apocalypse comes… lol but apart from that I’m good to go with the above stuff on a normal day-to-day basis. I LOVE the Jetsetter! I haven’t risked it on a flight yet though as I don’t want some snidey airport security person to take it if they feel like it! 👍✌️
Yep, daily carry for me has an acebeam H16 mini torch, a gerber splice mutitool, a key keeper (with house keys, and trolley key), a viperade mini pouch, which is used for holding coins and lipbalm), and the outside pockets hold the other torch, multitool and keys. I also carry a pair of noise cancelling earbuds, my phone, and a slimline wallet with my driving licence and some other cards. (oh and a small foldable shopping bag).
No, I don't need my Leatherman Curl or my Victorinox Huntsman on me everyday here in India, but i feel cool and get to flex my tools in front of my friends 😂. On serious note, I had watched your older video on edc and that video inspired me to keep my actual edc minimal.
Very good video and I agree for the most part! Very similar myself, got all the usual EDC gear but it's just too much. Stripped it down to; Victorinox compact Phone Wallet Car/House keys with olight iMorse. Very small first aid kit Acebeam Tac 2AA On the odd occasion a crkt pilar or my leatherman bond comes along for the journey but not often.
Getting to 5 mins I was about to say that one thing I'd definitely add is a torch, but you were ahead of me! I love watching EDC videos, but it's always brand new kit that they're apparently carrying (with affiliate links). I don't think anything can be called EDC until you've had it on your person most days for at least 6 months to qualify! I do also carry a handkerchief, partly because my Granddad always did, but also because it comes in handy on the regular.
Thank you for the great comments 👍 It’s soooo easy to go down the edc rabbit hole isn’t it! But yeah, for actual day to day ‘normal’ situations my minimal carry is enough. Don’t get me wrong - I have tons of ‘edc gear’ and if I’m going out of town, or into the countryside, or going to do a more specific activity, etc., etc. I’ll take more or different items, but not needed when I’m in urban situations when I can easily access other things if needed. Never carried a handkerchief myself - might look into that. What sort of stuff do you use it for? 🙂✌️👍
@ Various things. Sometimes it’s cleaning glasses or a phone screen, catching a sneeze (though I tend not to blow my nose on it!), I’ve used it as an impromptu mask when there are smells, wrapping things to protect them, wiping hands clean (depending on what it it). I sometimes use it to dry man hands when using a public toilet. The world is your oyster!
It seems like a lot of people follow the progression of: 1. Start by adding on or two items to their EDC, such as a multitool 2. Go down the EDC rabbit hole and experiment with carrying lots of stuff, sometimes all at once 3. Pare down to the essentials that they actually end up using every day. I love my Swiss Champ, it’s one of my favorite items I own, but for me personally, it’s just too large and heavy to justify carrying around 24/7, and realizing this started me into phase 3.
Tissues are always carried if I take a bag, mainly to wipe up any mess my messy kids make! And I do love a pen myself but don’t *always* carry one (there’s always an emergency one in my Swiss knife anyway) hence left it off this list. Definitely still a place for pen/pencil and paper in this modern world 👍👍
I carry 5 items total. Leatherman wave, pocket flashlight, fisher space pen, mini bic lighter and my watch. That's it and it covers pretty much everything for me
I find that my EDC kit varies slightly depending on what I've got planned for the day, but for a general trip around town or work day.... ... A small pouch or wallet containing the following... A keyring sized torch, a small UK legal victorinox with scissors, a pen and notepad, a spork. Oh and a robust watch for our marvellous British weather.
Good stuff for UK use, started looking at EDC clips recently, certainly does make you want to jump on the bandwagon.. boys toys wanna have list is endless, then reality sets in… probably have a few more items in a tool roll in the car… just in case … oops ! there we go again 😊
Knipex xs punch above their weight class! I was in uk tropical overseas territory known for its janky rental scooters and I used my knipex and gorilla tape to macgyver the side mirror that came loose while on the highway 😳
Yes definitely very useful items and lunch well above their size/weight! Much better than Leatherman pliers imho. Oooh, yes, & duct tape is fantastic!! I DO always carry some if I’m venturing further afield, in which case I DO take extra gear with me, & duct tape is just so useful! 👍👍👍
I carry a wallet with card, cash, fresnel lens, a small piece of paper, a couple of safety pins and a hair band, a few small things like that. Also included are a card with emergency contact info and important health stuff because I'm not 20 anymore and my body is knackered. In my pockets, coins, tissue, lug plugs. Victorinox complete with pen. Keyring with torch attached (I like a small O-light). Phone. Car key, pliers, etc are as you say, subject to requirements. I rarely carry a no pin card and don't have pay facility on my phone because they are potential problems. And the safety pins, hair band, and other some little bits and bobs are more for others. Maybe I have been asked for help with things you don't because I'm a woman? Even a grumpy old ex Venture Scout woman at that.
A watch doesn’t do NUFFINK my phone can’t do, I just like wearing one and always do so, always have done. Although having said that, I do also need to record the time multiple times a day at work, so a wristwatch is waaaaaay more convenient for that than getting my phone out of my pocket to see what time it is 👍
@accoutrements4469 I'm not knocking your taste in watches, but I think the only watch I can justify these days, is a dress watch or an interesting chronograph. My Casio sits in my drawer with my other watches, all gathering dust!!
That is all you realistically need to carry in a normal urban environment unless you're in a job that needs more Personally I've far too many keys on my keyring but it's a hastle to take keys on and off My Rambler and a torch are on it as wellTook the paint can opener off when I retired (I worked in a builders merchant) Like you always wear a watch Feel naked without one Got other Swiss that I carry if I need one
Mine starts with 1 Pocket Knife 2 Shades 3 Wallet 4 Lighter 5 LED rechargable Flashlight 6 Tactical pen 7 notebook 8 Kerchief 9 Mini pri bar 10 Multi Tool or Pen driver. I expand it as necc the further from home I travel.
You don't need to carry a lot of crap when you are locally. I live in the states and I don't carry any firearms. Maybe pepper spray or a personal alarm.
Annoying that safer (I.e. locking) knives are not allowed for sure… but It is what it is I guess. I get by just fine for day to day tasks with my little slip joint SAKs ✌️✌️
Honestly, I've never needed a better knife than one on a Victorinox in my day to day. I don't need a locking blade or a fixed blade when out and about. I have big multitools and locking/fixed blades at home or with tools. So in places or kits where I'll need them. But I don't need them for the small things that pop up and need to be sorted right now.
THANK YOU!

Much more realistic than most, including the woman I watched carrying a gieger counter around!
Knife or Victorinox and a tiny torch for me alongside phone and card holder. Super simple. I find I use them regularly but rarely want more.
Simple, straightforward, and ample for most townsfolk. Just one question - where did you get that nifty little card wallet ?
Very good video and I agree for the most part!

Victorinox compact
Phone

Car/House keys with olight iMorse.
Very small first aid kit
Acebeam Tac 2AA

Although having said that, I do also need to record the time multiple times a day at work, so a wristwatch is waaaaaay more convenient for that than getting my phone out of my pocket to see what time it is 👍
@accoutrements4469 I'm not knocking your taste in watches, but I think the only watch I can justify these days, is a dress watch or an interesting chronograph.
My Casio sits in my drawer with my other watches, all gathering dust!!
That is all you realistically need to carry in a normal urban environment unless you're in a job that needs more
Personally I've far too many keys on my keyring but it's a hastle to take keys on and off My Rambler and a torch are on it as wellTook the paint can opener off when I retired (I worked in a builders merchant)
Like you always wear a watch Feel naked without one
Got other Swiss that I carry if I need one
The watch is really useful when you give your phone to the kids to shut them up
Ha ha! Absolutely!! 👍
Pen and small notepad too?
Or notes app on a phone.
@benh715 phone dies?
Absolutely agree - the further away I am from home the more stuff I will take! 👌👌
My EDC? Phone, Rambler SAK, keys.
You don't need to carry a lot of crap when you are locally. I live in the states and I don't carry any firearms. Maybe pepper spray or a personal alarm.
Keys, phone.
☹️😳😳😭😭😭😒🙄🙄
I'm so sorry you live in a police state
Annoying that safer (I.e. locking) knives are not allowed for sure… but It is what it is I guess.
