One of my 5 favorite potters. I love the emphasis on form and mark making rather than decoration, as well as the lifelong exploration of materials.
I love the big pot at 7:07 on the right. That glaze is fantastic how it breaks and finds the marks.

Yes, yes, yes!!! Mike Dodd is one of the who and why I wanted to make pots. I was fortunate to have taken a night school semester with Roger Kerslake in Barrie, ON Canada; trained with Mick Casson, he was and is similarly a life-long potter's potter, as is one of my mentors, John Colbeck. All have such a breadth of knowledge, respect, humility, and I would say love for the material, the process, the art of the craft. Great exhibition; hope visit Goldmark in person some day...

I THINK THIS POTTERS POTS ARE SO MUCH MORE TRUE TO THE POTS THEMSELVES ...MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN MANY OTHERS THAT HAVE BEEN HIGHLIGHTED. POTTERS ARE SUCH HARD WORKERS!! GOD BLESS THEM EVERY ONE!

As much one of my favourite people, let alone potters. Good to see you’re still kicking Mike - even if it is electric assist now.

Iirc I wrote to Mr. Dodd in the late ‘70’s asking if he was taking on apprentices. He was nice enough to write back but said no he was not accepting any at that time 😢
His tomato red glaze with the wax resist is my absolute favorite… I tried so many times to replicate it with very limited success, very hard to do!

Unfortunately, potters are no longer being built, they are being replaced by ceramic artists.

I would say that potters are being built, a small but mighty group with a quiet strength and resolve - like Mike Dodd. Look at Clay College Stoke, for example. And I do believe (hope?!) that there are keen would-be potters out there like a friend earned a degree in ceramic design but so wanted to be a potter, so she apprenticed and worked and trained, and is doing quite well now.

Replaced? No, I don’t think so … I see functional potters and ceramic artists developing at the same time within the whole clay genre…
