HOW to CROCHET CABLE Stitch - Crochet CABLES and BRAIDS

  • You can learn how to Crochet the Cable Stitch in this video. Hi I'm Donna Wolfe from Naztazia. Crochet cables, which look like crochet brads, add a wonderful texture for a scarf, shawl, bag, and more. Cable stitches also look nice in a baby blanket, afghan, sweater, skirt, socks, and more. I'm using a worsted weight yarn and a size H 5 mm hook. When you are first starting out, it helps to use a larger size such as an H 5 mm, I 5.5 mm, J 6 mm, or even a K 6.5 mm hook.

    I totally love this stitch, I’m crocheting it in a 12”by 12” square for a blanket, but mine starts to become a dime shape, what do I do wrong?

    So I did this stitch with a large polyster yarn and made a few adjustments for anyone wanting to use this cable in a blanket. The cable being side by side with DC didn't pair well because the height difference. I found it paired better with a HDC (back loops only). I kept the back side with SC (back loops only) but because this is a one sided blanket, I wanted to make the back look better. Cables always leave loop gaps in the back so my solution on this was to work my chain links in multiplies of 13 plus 10, row 1, ch 1 and HDC across. Row 2, SC (BLO), row 3 do 9 HDC(BLO), then do a decrease stitch in 10 and 11 with a HDC (BLO) in 10 and finish off with a SC in 11. Then, do the cable stitch, then skip the 12th loop, do a decrease stitch in 13 and 14 with a SC in 13 and finish off with HDC (BLO) in 14. repeat to the end.. That way you aren't picking up or losing anymore stitches even though you are doing 2 decrease stitches. The back will only have 1 loop gap as opposed to 3 by doing that decrease stitch. And the reason I did a SC on the loops close to the cable is because if you did a decrease with 2 HDC it is lumpy in the back. I did a few swatches so I knew which decrease would look better. It also helps fill in the gaps a bit on the sides from the cable without taking away from the look of the cable. Keep in mind I used very bulky yarn with this so I don't know how this would look with smaller yarn. Those SC kinda hide behind the cable so I can't imagine it would look any different with smaller yarn. And I personally chose to 10 HDC between Cables but you could do any amount. Depending on how many cables you want. The trick is on that decrease to always make sure right before you start the cable that the decreased stitch starts with the HDC and the stitch after the cable starts with the SC. So its the same stitch just switched. The SC needs to be the one hiding behind the cable stitch on each side. And the reason I did Back loops Only on the HDC and SC is to give the front of the blanket more dimension with ribs going from side to side. I think it pairs so good with cables. It also just makes the stitches cleaner looking on the back too. Hopefully this made sense. I can offer any help or advise to anyone wanting to try this method.
    Thanks for sharing this cable stitch. I really love the way it looks.

    I love your videos!
    I have tried to make the cable stitch in many different patterns. Question for you, please? The wrong side always looks like it has gaps, or pockets. I wanted to make one for a gifted blanket, But I worry about them putting their toes in that pocket, and getting caught or something. I was trying to look at the wrong side of yours. Do you have that experience too? I don't remember that happening when I used to knit. Thank you for any help!

      Because of the front post stitches, followed by regular stitches, there's always some indentation in the back. This one has a little bit of a one, not as pronounced as others I have done.

    Thank you for this stitch it’s lovely. Is it normal for it to curl? I know you said do the stitches loosely which I have, but it’s still curling. 😊

    • @naztazia
      @naztazia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you do the stitches loosely, it shouldn't curl. Maybe try a larger hook to force your stitches to be looser.
